Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

Mr. Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film, "Capote."

The actor was found in the bathroom of his fourth floor apartment in the Pickwick House around 11:15 a.m. by a screenwriter, who called 911, the official said.

Awful news. This is such a loss. Great actor who will be greatly missed.
Masterful actor- my favorite roles of his, Capote, Twister, and fantastic as Farther Brendan Flynn in Doubt.

RIP

I checked imdb because there is almost nothing out there about this yet, but someone started a thread called "First, Paul Walker, now, Philip Seymour Hoffman, all the legends are dying." Not trying to excrement on Paul Walker, but, uh...whut? Hoffman is one of the greatest actors of this generation, and I don't think there's even a question on that. I'm genuinely shocked right now.

Your first mistake was reading the IMDb message boards.

I was just looking for news. There is a lot of dumb on that board, for sure.

What a shame. Dude was on borrowed time since he was into every drug he could get his hands on.

I was really looking forward to his dark comedy series on Showtime. Bet he would've raked in some awards for that

How is it that so many otherwise intelligent people in the world still completely fail to understand the first thing about addiction?
