I literally put no stock in defensive performance in the preseason other than the obvious (tackling, man to man coverage, etc.).

You'd like to see players give their full effort all of the time, regardless of the situation, but it would be foolish to think that the majority of players (or at least those assured of roster spots) go full throttle in the preseason.
