With the 5th overall pick, NYJ select: Ja'Marr Chase WR LSU
-
Nah, gotta draft a replacement for Adams.

-
First two picks would be v cool with me
-
I really like taking an IOL in the second round.

my 2cts pls?
Would love if Wyatt Davis were available at #33 but can't see it - will have to see how it fleshes out once the Big10 starts play (and steal Minny Gophers HC). :-) Brevin Jordan would address the non-performing TE position but if Davis were available at #33, Trey Smith at #37 would give you a pair of brute gurds to go with the Big Ticket. At #65 (the UNC LB), UNC has a pair of WRs maybe worth a look. Speaking of WRs, nice call on Tamorrion Terry - guy looked good vs. ND last week.
-
Said it last year and I'll say it again: Trey Smith would be a top twenty talent if the blood clots never happened.
He is an elite guard.
Put him next to Becton.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply, however my mocks aren't worth this level of constructive criticism since I just use the Fanspeak On the Clock site. So I just make the picks depending on who's there, realistic or not.

We should draft Trey Smith and Daniel Faalele.

Minnesota's 6'9 399 pound tackle
And you wanna make the MFer an OG?
My god. If we did that I’d put him between Becton and McGovern and tell McGovern don’t ever bother looking left just go help Smith and Fant. Ain’t no one getting around Becton or Faalelee

He's an outstanding athlete for his size, similar to Becton. He'd ideally play right tackle, but Fant has been good there.

I hear he can run a 1 yard screen

That was more what I meant. I also expect given the success of Becton I could see him rising into the top 20-25 come draft day.
I’d love to see it. I am not in the least opposed to an OL with Seattle’s pick. Guys like Davis, Humphrey, Smith and Faalelee would all help this line take one hell of a step forwards. Given the depth of weapons I’d be plenty fine waiting until day 2 to grab one, but I sure wouldn’t be upset if we went that route either
-
The only skill player I'd take over an OG/OT with Seattle's pick is Travis Etienne if he's there, but he'll likely go in the Top 15. Maybe Kyle Pitts...
Chase and Waddle are the premiere wideout prospects and both will go really high.

I don't want Hubbard because this team doesn't need anymore Canadians.
Shaun Wade is my favorite defensive player in this draft class.

Sidebar: Yesterday UMass' punter semi-whiffed and hit a helicopter screwball that went all of about 25 yards downfield, hit the ground then started spinning backwards towards the line of scrimmage. It would've continued traveling backwards except it was downed.....by the UMass punter.

How bad is Ross’s stock taking a hit? I think Bryan Edwards went in the 3rd round last year and Ross is a better prospect.
Tamorrion Terry in the mid rounds will be in every mock draft I do this year.
Tutu Atwell as well.
-
Justyn Ross might never be able to play football again, but he was a top ten overall prospect before neck issues.
If he checks out medically, I think he'll still go really late just because of the risk.

So just how good is this Zack Wilson guy? Did a mock on TDN beginning with a series of trade downs with an eye on Wilson. Able to trade down a couple of times off the #1 pick which translated into lots of picks (15) in return (if I got too aggressive trading down I risked losing Wilson which would've blown up the mock altogether).

I haven't watched as much CFB this year as normal, but I've been following Wilson. His good plays on film remind me of Patrick Mahomes coming out of college. Mahomes had question marks, and so does Wilson, but Wilson has the ability to be really good.

If you all spent this entire season being excrement fans pulling for defeat so that we can draft Lawrence and then Wilson turns out to be the actual star of this draft, I'm never letting any of you forget it.

I am on record saying that I dont hate the idea of trading down if we can get a massive haul and still get an elite QB prospect. Part of the value of the #1 pick is that you can potentially trade down. It would need to be a massive haul but I really like what I've seen from Wilson. That said, I haven't dont deep research yet, and it is hard to pass up TL.
-
The main issue with Wilson is that he hasn’t played anyone good
-

Correct me if I am wrong...
But one of, if not the biggest reasons Lawrence is considered an exceptional prospect is how battled tested he is, how many games he's played, how many he has dominated, and how many games against legitimate NFL talent he hasn't just played in, but been spectacular.
Lots of guys have incredibly impressive NFL tools or size (Wilson is likely in this category as well) but they haven't been tested routinely by NFL talent, NFL speed and not just show up and play well, but be the best player on the field the way Lawrence has. That's part of what makes Lawrence transcendent as a prospect.
The fact Justin Fields just excrement his pants against the one (not even close) elite defense he played this year is a big concern for me. The first time his weapons didn't out athlete everyone on the field and he is just throwing into giant windows without any pressure he makes some bad decisions and poor throws (https://twitter.com/BuckeyesWire/status/1330232731402444805?s=20). Given that's not even a defense full of NFL athletes and he's performing that way, why should we look at him as a guy who can play like a top notch QB when in the NFL everything gets faster and the windows get smaller and the margin for error is so small?
As for Wilson, I'd have 2 major concerns, him playing against top talent, and I'd also want to know why he had such a shitty sophomore season if I was considering drafting him.

Trevor Lawrence was one of the best NFL QB prospects before he ever played a meaningful snap at Clemson.

It would be so entertaining to put Falalee at G next to Becton. Obviously in this scenario you are planning on either Falalee or Mayfield kicking inside, I just would love to watch Falalee next to Becton even if it’s not a great idea footwork wise

Could you imagine 'staring down the barrel' at those two behemoths? There they are: 770 lbs. of "we're moving you" attitude (not including pads).
Talk about "we're running the ball 'there'...stop us."
You're right, I was looking at book-ending Becton & Faalele at OT with the 'smaller youngsters' (Smith & Mayfield) at OG. Again, this was just throwing out the idea of a young, monstrous offensive line fronting an already big, talented and mobile 6'6" QB. While Faalele's supposedly a gifted athlete for his size (and given his rugby background), he opted out because of the Covid, so he hasn't added to an already thin body of work to assess.

I will be so curious to see when he is drafted. You cannot teach his size and athleticism, add in the Becton recency bias and I can see him going very high. But he also is unrefined, and is still learning Football, let alone the position he is actually playing. From a prospect/ready to contribute perspective I would assume a mid round grade, but on tools he could easily be a 1st round guy. In general I will be very curious what happens to the many guys who opted out this year and didn't put anything on tape for a season. Historically guys that take a year off don't play well upon their return (Bell, Mike Williams, Mo Clarett) so I'll be fascinated to see how the league values those guys, particularly the non-elite talents like Jamar Chase who could have swung wildly in draft projection based on the season they had this year.

(I think) Mack brought this up and it's as good of a strategy as we can have if we end up with the #2 pick.
Go BPA (Penei Sewell) at #2 and then BPA again with the Seattle first. Draft a quarterback with our second round pick to compete with Sam Darnold next offseason.
Kyle Trask, Mac Jones, and Desmond Ridder seem to be the clear-cut third tier quarterback options. Trask is a favorite of mine. Maybe Trey Lance slides a bit.
We've lost a generational talent at QB, but we still have to do something to try to get better there.

That doesn't really make sense though, you're not using #2 overall on a guard. You're using it on a freakishly talented lineman who can play in either position.

Tackle, no question

Tackle, no question
Makes sense, and having a pair of bookend monsters on rookie deals would be awesome, but we still have the IOL problem. I think Elflein and McGovern are serviceable, and maybe we can have another go at Thuney. Lewis and van Roten can both freak off though.

This is the formula. Hell, chances are that if we want to draft a qb the following year we could still trade the one we draft in 2021 for a mid to late round pick.

I'd be totally on board with this - I'd also be worried some team (Bears?) will be thinking along the same lines and snatch Trask earlier.

Yep. I think that's the best of a bad situation.
Darnold is likely broken, but he is still young and maybe a new staff and supporting cast could fix him. But he has not earned the benefit of the doubt heading into next season.
Take a QB in the 25-35 range with one of those picks and maybe trade up/down to secure that guy. I haven't been as high on Trask, but that's likely biased towards him being a 3-star quarterback who was content being a backup in Florida, so it was hard for me to get on him as a 1st-round pick. He's been very impressive this season, and he's absolutely a possibility with one of those picks.
Quite frankly, it will be whatever the new coach wants to do. He might want his own QB in Wilson or Fields and let's move on. But a Darnold/Trask competition could also work, it would cost less draft capital, and if it didn't work, we would hopefully have an even better infrastructure for the QB we take in 2023 when this all fails.

On the day after it all fell apart, did a half-assed/going-through-the-motions TDN mock (saved as "The Day After It All Fell Apart"):
https://thedraftnetwork.com/mockDraft/JbILrsH49D (click on "user's picks)
1. Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
18. Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida
34. Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
66. Jackson Carmon, OT(to OG), Clemson
89. Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida
142.Rashad Weaver, Edge, Pitt
153.Ronnie Perkins, Edge, Oklahoma

On the day after it all fell apart, did a half-assed/going-through-the-motions TDN mock (saved as "The Day After It All Fell Apart"):

1. Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
18. Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida
34. Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
66. Jackson Carmon, OT(to OG), Clemson
89. Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida
142.Rashad Weaver, Edge, Pitt
153.Ronnie Perkins, Edge, Oklahoma

That would be a nice supporting cast for Sam Howell in 2022.

As of now (crazy early, and without the full combine/draft process or CFB playoffs yet), I'd be shocked if we don't take a QB at #2, assuming we stay there.
I know Sewell is basically the Trevor Lawrence of OTs as a prospect, but I expect a new HC wanting to be paired with a fresh rookie QB on a rookie deal, rather than being saddled with the worst starting QB in the league on a lame-duck season. Or pairing said worst starter with a second-rounder to duke it out.
Get a #1 jersey ready, fellas! Wilson or Fields is a'comin'!
But Becton and Sewell on the same line is clearly tempting, and maybe that will be JD's plan, who knows.

If we take Great Value Baker Mayfield (Sam Howell) or Spencer Rattler, I'm out. If Zach Wilson doesn't come out, he's QB1 next year and it's not even close.
Rattler is by far the ugliest prospect in the history of the sport. King Ugly 2020 and beyond.
JT Daniels looked really good at Georgia once he got a shot.

The other positive if we do take Sewell or someone else at #2, we have enough draft capital to trade back up if we need to. If the Jets don't love the quarterbacks at #2, or if they have these 2nd-tier QBs bunched together, we have enough draft capital to trade back up to get the QB we want.
If we take Sewell at #2, I think the most likely scenario is we end up packaging a couple picks to move up to take the QB we want. Most quarterbacks get traded up for. We have the draft capital to do that. Steelers, Washington, Colts, Saints, Buccaneers and Bears are all possibilities to take QBs among teams that may be picking in the 20's. Most of those teams likely will go somewhere else, but I also think we might not be the only team trying to secure one of these quarterbacks in the late 1st. We might want to trade ahead of one of these teams.
The other option if we think there isn't a huge difference between the 2nd-tier quarterbacks is trying to trade down from #2 and hoping someone else really wants one of these QBs or Sewell. Then we can either take the QB we want later in the top 10, or we can use those picks to trade up from the Seahawks pick to get the QB we want.
A lot of this will also depend on the coach we hire. If we hire a coach who wants to run a spread/air raid, Trey Lance becomes a lot more interesting than if we get a coach who wants a traditional NFL offense. And if we want a traditional pocket QB, then Kyle Trask becomes more interesting.

It doesn't solve our QB problem.
it's an excellent piece of business if Darnold wasn't rekt.

I like Wilson a lot, and Fields is growing on me a lot, too, but I would make this trade.
But if we make this trade, I think you have to draft Trey Lance at 14, assuming we have a good, creative offensive coaching staff in place. Or we would need to make Trask or one of the other Day 2 QB prospects one of our 2nd-round picks.

Are you down on Ridder? Haven't watched him much this season, though he's always one of the first guys mentioned in that group, along with Mac Jones and Jamie Newman and a couple others.

He's alright. I'd just hate to see this team go the Kellen Clemens/Geno Smith/Christian Hackenberg route again.
If we are going to pass on a quarterback in the first round, I'd rather just wait until the fourth round and take an upside sleeper like Feleipe Franks.
I'm cool with taking a toolsy prospect after the third round. I don't want Justin Fields or Trey Lance in the first round because there's too much risk with them mentally.

I will have a much more refined opinion on Fields and Lance once I know who we hire as our head coach.
If we have someone like Ryan Day running the show, swing for the fences.
I thought you liked Trask enough to go in the 2nd round.
Also, we don't HAVE to take a QB in this trade down scenario, but Darnold cannot be the only option at quarterback. And maybe we get lucky and find our Ryan Tannehill in free agency when he was brought in to push Mariota. And I think Lance has enough upside where he's worth the 15th pick, unless we hire some rigid head coach who wants to make him a pocket passer.
-
I thought you liked Trask enough to go in the 2nd round.
I really like Trask but if we pass on Zach Wilson at 2, I think we should just set the team up for whatever QB we are taking near the top in 2022.
We are going to STINK in 2021.

Yeah, I'd do that and ride with Darnold one more year. I guess you could bail on Darnold and sign an Andy Dalton type for a few bucks more. Someone a little more stable that would be more likely to help you win than make you lose, but probably do neither.
I'd stick with Darnold another year. More likely to improve or worsen significantly than make the decision to move on any tougher in 2022. He'll prove us wrong or right. He has another cheap year left and we aren't getting much in trade for him. If I'm wrong and someone offers a 2nd or so then trade him.
I can't stand the idea of drafting a QB after the first round. excrement or get off the pot.
-

If we pass on a superior QB prospect, I do not want to draft a quarterback at all.

Here's another problem with Darnold: he can't throw the ball deep or outside the numbers. This is severely limiting Denzel Mims and whoever the hell else we have outside in 2021.
Lets stick with him and hope he gets better is not a sound strategy. It's impacting other position groups.

Look at #2. Look at it.
I defy someone to tell me they wouldn't do that deal.
There is only one person that needs to not be interested in doing that deal, and that man's name is John Lynch GM of the SF 49ers.
If that offer were on the table, for anyone other than Lawrence, we would HAVE to take it. It would be building the best foundation absolutely possible by stacking us to the brim with talent (potentially). The key of course is we still need to get the QB eventually. Given many people stating the 2022 class just isn't that good, and with meh QB play a team with as much talent as we SHOULD have on the 2021 team, we are probably set to be drafting late in the top 10, probably somewhere between 7-12 with a 6-10 type season on the horizon. So are we really going to wait until 2023 to go after a QB? The positive being that our 2022 and 2023 SF picks would probably be middle of the pack as with no way to influx talent to their roster, they won't be getting over the top.
I still hope that this offer were to be given to Douglas though. It would make losing Lawrence a little bit better.
-
#DakPrescottSZN
If Dallas lets him walk, they are idiots.
Hopefully they do, but man there will be a ton of suitors for Dak, and we would need a LOT of money sent directly into his accounts.
Makes the need to trade out of #2 a really big deal to get more cheap talent in house to surround him with.
-
I think we should just set the team up for whatever QB we are taking near the top in 2022.
I'm OK with this. We missed out on the once-in-a-lifetime QB, now it's time to rebuild properly. Provided we supply the offensive line with serious resources, I'm even OK with trading down and spending our first pick on defense.
I'm not optimistic about Sam Darnold's future here but rebuilding around him is prebuilding around The Guy v.2022. We can't keep throwing young quarterbacks to the wolves.
-
But for the record, Sewell at 2 HYPE.
-
#DakPrescottSZN
I'm fine with this as well. I was fine with it for Kirk Cousins a few years ago, and he isn't good. Dak is legitimately good.
Dak still has more touchdown passes than Sam Darnold this season.
Dak is also a path that allows us to compete next season, and it allows us to use our draft capital to build up the rest of the roster.
Then we could get Sewell at 2, maybe get an edge and a CB in the next 2 rounds, and we can hopefully get another WR in free agency. Or some combination of that.

This. Load up on talent in the draft and sign a vet to compete with darnold. In this scenario we would have 3 first round picks next year to get any qb we want. There is no reason to spend a draft pick on someone in the second.

I don’t get what people see in Shaun Wade as an outside CB prospect. I don’t think he has played well at all this year. Overall it’s a strong draft, supplement it with a strong WR signing in FA and hopefully a starting OG and perhaps a pass rusher and that’s a pretty good starting rebuild

To be fair I'm mostly drafting positional need combined with talent that I know of. I just drafted the top CB on their board.

How can you want to pass up Lance in a trade-down scenario in one paragraph and then say you're scared of Lance in New England in the next paragraph?
If you think Lance is good, take him with one of the trade-down picks. If you don't think he is good, you can't be scared of him in New England.

Because coaching and personnel matter. Also I'm less worried about him becoming a hall of famer and more worried about having to deal with it twice a year

This mock also got me thinking about Sams draft value.
Unless the jets are 100% sold on wilson i like the idea of us holding on to Sam until draft day. Trading him early plays our hand while holding onto him gives us leverage.
With his value being pretty low right now as qbs come off the bored his value will start to increase

this only matters in a few scenarios
1. the Jets aren't decided on a QB and really want a trade down from 2 more than anything
2. No one is offering requisite 'value' for Sam.
If the Jets are sold on Wilson/Lance/Fields/Trask/Jones then trading Sam early probably procures the best value. Also if the Jets are indifferent on Sam vs. a rookie vs. another vet, then if we get a good offer for Sam (a second or better) then we probably take that while it's on the table. Someone MIGHT trade for Sam to be their starter/compete for the gig early in the offseason, but no one is going to wait until draft day to make that choice, they will move on to other options by that point in time.

I agree. I just think the #2 pick is more valuable this year if teams fall in love with QBs. And I think there are better ways to utilize the pick than to take an OT there.
Sewell is my top nom-QB choice there if we can't find a trade. But I think we could find a trade if we want to.

You wouldn't be able to move back very far, because Cincinnati will almost certainly draft Penei Sewell at 4. I don't think we'd have a shot at him if we move back.
It'd be pretty nice to drop back and take one of the receivers (Chase/Smith).

I don't really like this argument, because paying players well because they're performing to an elite standard sounds like a freaking excellent problem to have and I would love nothing more than to be wringing our hands over which of our elite players we have to trade because we have too many of them. The problem isn't paying elite players, it's that we've been paying too much to excrement ones.
-

Which one are you going to put at LT, and which one at RT?
keep in mind LTs make more than RTs do....there's a 5 mil guaranteed per year difference between the highest paid LT and the highest paid RT. So you're essentially asking Sewell or Becton (two elite LT prospects) to change positions, and then take a paycut.
-
Which one are you going to put at LT, and which one at RT?
Becton should stay at LT because he is the tenured player.
-
Becton should stay at LT because he is the tenured player.
I agree.
I'm just saying drafting Sewell at 2 and then putting him at RT for the long term doesn't make a lot of sense. It's great depth to have if Becton ever gets hurt, but we have too many holes to draft for luxury. Plus we have a fat question mark at QB.
-

Hard to predict the draft before free agency
Yes
Plus not having a HC yet makes it difficult to speculate on scheme fit too.
-
Looking more like the optimal move is trading down, but have to see how the QB moves go down first most likely.
-
Becton should stay at LT because he is the tenured player.
I disagree. Tenure shouldn’t matter one bit, otherwise Frank Gore should be our starter at RB next year.
If we draft Sewell (or any other OT prospect) it’s a competition, best player wins loser shifts to the right side. I expect Becton to win, but I’m going to make him prove it in that scenario. If he does excellent, it plays out as I thought. If he loses then the better player is protecting the blindside.
How on Earth is that a bad thing?
As for paying guys, that’s a 4 years from now problem, and one we haven’t had in nearly a decade. There’s also no guarantee both continue to play at an elite level. There’s also the chance of you draft Liam Eichenberg (or whomever) at 27 with the Seattle Pick and they become the best OT in the class and you have to worry about paying that guy too.
Draft the best players period.
-

I do agree that the problem you have is that if you draft Sewell and play him at RT, then in two years' time you have to pay Becton as the elite LT he's become, then a year later you have to pay Sewell as the elite LT he could get paid as elsewhere versus the elite RT he is with us. That said, top RTs don't get paid that much less these days, it's just a bigger drop off after the first few.
Again, given the excrement we've had to eat for most of the last decade this really doesn't sound like the worst problem in the world to have to worry about.

I agree. Becton was very good for a rookie this year, but I don't think he was so good where he can't be moved to LT just because he's one year older. If Sewell is a better fit at LT and Becton works equally well on both sides, do what's best for the team. Of course, if Becton thinks it's a demotion to be moved to the right side and clearly doesn't want to do it, then we don't really want to pee him off.
I don't care if we have to pay 2 elite OT. One elite OL doesn't make an offensive line. I think you want at least 2 studs up front ideally, and we would have that. We can go cheaper on the interior line once they get paid. It's not like paying 2 elite safeties.
But if Fields and/or Wilson are viewed as elite QB prospects by the NFL, we should either take them, or use the #2 pick to trade down to someone who will take them. We have a ton of needs to fill, and if we maintain that flexibility, we could also use those draft picks to make a big trade for someone down the line.
It's possible the media is higher on Fields/Wilson than NFL teams, and my scenario isn't realistic. But if those guys are franchise QBs, we should either take them or trade down and get the value of a franchise QB. Taking a right tackle at 2 is not the best use of that asset.
I felt the same way 2 years ago with Quinnen. The difference is that year, a trade down wasn't really realistic since there weren't QBs to trade up for. This year, there are.
-
Trading down also could give us extra assets in 2022 if the Texans hold on to Watson through the draft.
-

If they don’t trade him prior to the draft, he won’t be “up for auction” until at least next offseason, and we can’t plan on that. That #2 pick needs to get us a QB for next year. Whether that’s Watson, Wilson or a ton of assets for Sam we need to use it to aid us
-

Watson is one example. But if the plan is to give Sam one last shot, picking up an extra 1et next year in a trade down would give us a lot more ammo for a trade in the draft or for a veteran. Maybe a stud linebacker demands a trade. Maybe a stud WR demands a trade.
My overall point is that the #2 pick in the draft is a massive draft asset, especially in a draft that potentially has multiple QBs.
I would rather end up with the #2 or #3 OT and another 1st-rounder next year. If the 49ers or Panthers or Broncos want to trade up for Zach Wilson and give us a 1 next year and additional picks, I would do that.
Sewell is great. If we stay at 2 and don't take a QB, he is my top choice. But I think we should get more out of that pick than a right tackle, assuming the QB class is viewed extremely highly around the league.

this is the season for optimism, dude.

draft sewell at 2 and a wr in the back half of the round, thats my preferred situation if we cant have trevor.

Is Sewell a truly elite prospect? Someone that is a massive difference maker on the offensive line, especially being put at RT? I haven’t watched enough of him, but I respect Daniel Jeremiah’s opinion and he doesn’t even have him as his #1 OT.
I feel like if you’re going to pass on a very good QB prospect, or even a top tier WR prospect, you have to be sure Sewell is a future perennial all pro.

Penei Sewell is the best tackle prospect in 21 years. He is better than Jake Long and Joe Thomas.
Jeremiah is watching last year's film, because Slater didn't play this season either. I have absolutely no idea how he can rank at 6'3 305 "OT" over Sewell.
In their respective film, Slater is 22 years old. Sewell is 19.

Sewell is the better prospect. If they were in the same class, I'd take Sewell.
I loved Mekhi Becton before he was even draft eligible. You just don't see kids his size playing tackle anymore. He is absolutely freakish, but he doesn't have the athleticism or the feet that Penei Sewell has.
Sewell has the skillset to be the best overall tackle in the NFL. Becton has the potential to develop into the best run blocker in the NFL. Sewell is the best pass protecting lineman to maybe ever enter the NFL Draft.
The term "generational" is being used to describe Trevor Lawrence. The same thing can be said for Sewell. He's that good.
-
Daniel Jeremiah is on crack if he thinks a 6'3 305 pound zone tackle (Rashawn Slater) is a better NFL prospect than 6'6 331 pounder (Penei Sewell).
Measurables alone should bump Slater down the list. He is a guard at the next level.

Jaycee is a pretty damn good prospect.
I imagine that our first three picks draft plan goes something like this
2/3 on offense
1/3 on defense
1/3 is a trade down first to acquire more capital
Offensive targets by priority: QB, IOL, WR, Playmaker
Defensive targets by priority: CB, Edge, (very big gap) LB

I think that turning his first three picks into 2 offensive players, 1 defensive player and 1 pick traded down for more picks would cement his status as draft Jesus.

I mean it shouldn’t be all that hard. Someone is going to want one of those 3 picks in a trade scenario, hell someone will probably want all 3. It’s just determining the value we can receive.
At 2, does someone want a QB? Does someone want to leapfrog the Dolphins for Sewell? Teams like Atlanta, Cincy, Detroit and Carolina all make sense from a trade perspective for having an arguement to move up.
At 23 seems like a sweet spot for a tier 2 QB. Who wants to jump up ahead of the steelers to grab Trey Lance or Mac Jones?
At 34, there will be plenty of round 1 talent still on the board, who wants to come get it?
You gotta believe at least one of those scenarios is going to be available to Joe Douglas.
Then it’s just a matter of grabbing the right quantity of offensive and defensive players
-

Mathematical impossibility? I’m expecting one trade back with his first 3 options to select a talent.
Then take 2 offensive guys and a defensive guy with the first 3 selections he actually makes. Unless you’re being intentionally asinine and assuming that I meant he would trade a pick while also still selecting a player with it, that’s not a mathematical impossibility.

I like the first three picks but we aren't helping out the QB much other than OL. Tylan Wallace is alright but this team desperately needs help at WR and RB. You can't come out of the draft with no back, a backup TE, and some guys that will maybe be 4th and 5th string receivers early on.
-
We're in for a big debate at 2 and 23.
If you take at QB at 2 then can you justify going CB at 23? I think if you don't take a receiver at 23, you risk missing on that position entirely. Some slot guys might be there at 34 (Moore and Toney) but we need another outside threat. Would we consider a tight end or a back at 34?
23 and 34 are extremely important to get out of the rebuild.

I think you shore up the offense now, defense be damned. We cannot continue to choke off our QB, whoever it is, with lack of talent. I'd rather lose shootouts than have a defeated hoo-ha as QB because he has no help.

i don't agree with this but as the days go on and the more i think about it, the more it feels like we move forward with sam and use the picks we have to optimize the team/weapons around him, either by staying put at 2 and drafting OT or a trade down of some sort and focusing on OL/WR/RB
-
I think one of these two things will happen if we end up with Robert Saleh:
1. Trade back with Atlanta and bring in Matt Ryan because he knows the Shanahan offense. He'd compete with Sam Darnold unless a QB slips to that spot.
2. Take Zach Wilson (or Justin Fields, hopefully not) at 2. Trade Darnold to the highest bidder. Bring in one of the SF QB free agents, CJ Beathard or Nick Mullens.
That second pick will get a new QB some way. We can't go into 2021 with Sam Darnold as our surefire starting QB. He either needs to be gone or he needs legitimate competition.
-

You would keep Darnold if we dealt for Matt Ryan? I don't really see the point. Ryan is better than Darnold now, and Darnold is soon a free agent. If we're trading for Ryan, I'd rather recoup a pick elsewhere for Sam.
Outside of that nitpick, both those options are fine by me.
-

In this scenario, Ryan would be part of a deal where Atlanta is moving up to 2. So if we don't draft a QB with their first rounder, then Darnold stays on to compete with Ryan. I don't think you hand the keys to either of them.
-
That's literally four thirds.
Kinda like the plot in "The Producers" where they sold 25,000 percent of a (planned flop) show to investors.

Scenario 1 fits into my attitude a few weeks ago. 2 fits more into my thinking after Sam's major lack of performance at the end of the year. I'll be okay keeping Sam if Ryan comes in but yeah, neither should be considered the starter until the last day of preseason.

Assuming we go for the rookie over Watson and Sam, it needs to be Wilson and it damn well should be with the idea of trading Sam for the beat offer we can get. We should be hoping all the aging QBs retire to help spur a bidding war amongst playoff teams in need of QBs. Brees and Rivers are out, we need Ben to go next. Anything to drive the price up either for #2 or Sam

The Steelers are signing Watkins. They've already got Rudolph there. They're not trading for Darnold even if Ben retires.

New York Jets
Zach Wilson · QB

If the Jets don't love a quarterback in this spot, it will make sense to see if there are any takers for a trade. If there aren't, starting over at QB would make sense. Wilson has significant arm talent.

Travis Etienne · RB
PICK ACQUIRED FROM THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

A three-down rusher with a winning background, Etienne runs with great urgency and competitiveness. Improving the ground game could have a huge impact on the success of a young QB, if the Jets do indeed take a passer at No. 2 overall.
Has the Pats taking Fields.

Really not dying to draft a running back in the first round given all our other needs.
Part of the problem with our team-building for years has been that we've invested premium picks and money into non-premium positions. Taking a RB at 23 would be compounding that error.
Obviously, if Etienne becomes a star, the pick can still be worth it, but if he's not a star, he's probably not worth that pick to us considering we can get replacement-level production for little investment.
We absolutely need to address RB, but we don't need to spend a 1st-round pick or sign someone to Le'Veon Bell money to do it.

I'm not going out of my way to draft Etienne, Harris or [insert another HB here] either....my point was that if it happened, I'm not losing my excrement over it. Like you said, this team has holes all over the place.
I'm not going to be angry if we finally surround our QB with some elite skill players.

I just know I went against my better judgment in defending the Bell signing for the same reasoning. "Hey, at least we're adding skill players around our QB."
Running backs aren't the way to help out a young quarterback. Yes, a quality running attack would help a young quarterback, but you don't have to spend a 1st-round pick on a RB to get there. I'd rather build up the OL and get a couple RBs in here that can do it by committee.

You're right, but I still don't like spending significant assets on running back regardless.
Draft core positions. Get someone who can make plays for the QB down the field or disrupt things for the opponent's QB. Or guys who can block and make every facet of our offense more effective.

Yep. This is exactly the deal I would like to do. And we still get Chase at 8, who is one of my favorite options at 2. I'd also feel a lot more comfortable with DeVonta Smith's skinny derriere at 8 than I would be at 2 for sure. And we still have OL options.

100%
LaFleur is a passing game specialist. He is going to hoard pass catchers. We really need to key in on YAC players: Kadarius Toney, Rondale Moore, D'Wayne Eskridge, Elijah Moore, Amari Rodgers...
His brother turned a fifth round pick into one of the best all-purpose players in the NFL. His mentor turned Raheem Mostert/Jeff Wilson/Matt Breida into a formidable rushing attack.
Jamaal Williams is a free agent RB to keep in mind. Would've said Jeff Wilson too, but he re-signed with the Niners already.
Williams played in the same offense that Zach Wilson is coming out of at BYU. Tailor-made RB for the Shanahan scheme.
-
Joe Douglas doesn't seem to value the RB either.
If we sign one in FA, I think our backfield will look something like this:
Jamaal Williams/Ty Johnson/Lamical Perine/Late Round Rookie
Josh Adams could be retained too and we can keep the draft pick.
-
I'd take Kylin Hill in the fourth round over Najee Harris/Travis Etienne in the first round for this scheme.

houston is going to double down on their lunacy/idiocy and get into a pissing match with watson. watson will not play this year and he isn't going anywhere this year
a few weeks of overt outward disgruntlement will not be enough for them to give up on their 25 year old franchise qb. it's going to take a lost season

I don't think the Texans are bluffing. I know Watson isn't bluffing.
-
A running back taking an entire season off is a very different thing than a quarterback taking an entire season off. I don't see any scenario in which Watson decides to do that, no matter how pissed off he is with Houston. If Watson plays hardball, I think Houston eventually relents. When that will be? I'm not sure but I believe it will be well before the season starts.

Another Etienne projection at 23.
I think mock drafters are mostly just looking for a place to slot Etienne in the 1st round since they think he's a 1st-round caliber prospect, and the Jets are an easy fit because we have the worst RB situation in the NFL. But if we take Etienne over Darrisaw or Mayfield, I would not be happy.

If the Jets take a tight end in the top ten (or in the first round at all), then we deserve to be a bottom feeder NFL team for another decade
That actually might be one of the worst NYJ mocks I've ever seen. Using the 23rd pick on an OT that will likely go in the third or fourth round is almost as bad as using a third on a player that
won't play in 2021 because he blew out his Achilles.
-
Why do you hate Kyle Pitts so much?
On paper, Pitts is 6'6", 240 lbs, fast, quick, great hands, great catch radius, and he's a complete mismatch nightmare. He could be our George Kittle. Every time I watch Pitts, I'm impressed.
I do worry a little about the positional value, but if they use him as a pass catcher and line him up at WR a good chunk of the time, I don't think it matters as much. Plus, tight ends have been more hit-and-miss in the NFL, but I'm not sure how much you can hold that against him.
Right now, I would take Pitts over every WR in the draft not named Ja'Marr Chase.
-
Why do you hate Kyle Pitts so much?
Tight end is not a valuable position, at all. The best tight ends in the NFL are all mid-to-late round picks. It is not a premium position. It holds less value than running back. He also can't block so he's useless on certain plays.
Right now, I would take Pitts over every WR in the draft not named Ja'Marr Chase.
Taking Pitts over Smith and Waddle is a fireable offense.
-
He could be our George Kittle.
A fifth round pick (that can block)
-
I think Herndon still has tons of potential as a TE2. We need to another TE for sure, but we've got to stop drafting non-premium positions with premium picks.
The tight end is a focal point in the BYU passing game, so Zach Wilson needs some good players there. I'd much rather take Hunter Long in the third round than Pitts in the first. Kenny Yeboah is also really good in the passing game. Yeboah is like Pitts-lite.

One of my favorite things about seeing mocks is that I realize we also have an extra pick somewhere in this range for Sam. Imagine slapping Wyatt Davis or Trey Smith in with the pick we get for Sam to that group? That would make for a hell of a turn around talent wise.

That might be the worst mock I've seen thus far
-
I mean Kwity Paye is potentially the #1 EDGE prospect in the draft, so getting him at 23 isn't that bad.
Kyle Pitts #4 is unforgiveable though.
-
i like the trade down to 4 a lot, but kiper wasn't thinking when he thought 'jets will give up potential QBs at 2, trade down, and pick up the TE they really wanted!'
in a trade down id really love one of the WRS (preferrably chase) or OL
-
I'd be fine with this. I'm a big fan of Pitts. In a perfect world I would trade down further to someone else who wants a QB in this situation, but if we aren't going QB, I would take Pitts over anyone other than Chase and Sewell.
Get a great offensive weapon, extra draft capital, and a great edge prospect.
I know "tight end in the top 10" is scary and not great positional value, and tight ends take longer than receivers usually. But if he plays most snaps and he's used as a primary pass catcher, does it really matter? Teams like the Raiders and 49ers have been able to run their passing games through the tight end. Both Super Bowl teams were loaded at the tight end position. There are so few difference makers at tight end, if that's what the Jets think he can be, he's worth the pick. This isn't Jace Amaro.
I also have faith in this GM and coach. Saleh keeps talking about how he knows what kind of players he wants in the system, so if we take a guy like Pitts in the top 10, I have faith that we have an idea how to use him.
I would take Chase over Pitts, but every other receiver has enough question marks for me to prefer Pitts. Yes, a tight end isn't a great positional value. Neither is a 170-lb WR.
Overall, I'm pretty excited about our options at the top of the draft. All the QBs have cases to be made they can be franchise guys, and there are elite guys at other positions that can bolster our offense if we go elsewhere.
-
Yes, a tight end isn't a great positional value. Neither is a 170-lb WR.
I think that's a fair argument, but I don't recall anyone on here being a big fan of the idea of Smith with a top pick either.
I haven't looked at Kiper's draft, but I suspect that if we traded with Atlanta to give them #2 it means we've already either traded for a vet or decided to roll with Sam for another year. Miami's not taking a QB at #3 so unless they trade out of it, #4 is going to be getting calls.
-

I actually had this thought. If Atlanta calls and wants up to 2, and specifically wants the QB we don’t want. How big would JDs balls have to be to make that move?
If we trade out of two everyone and their grandmother will decide we are out on the QBs and are targeting Sewell/Chase/Smith. Especially if we call all the teams that wanna get up, Carolina, SF, Detroit etc and tell them that everyone knows Miami isn’t going QB we are the spot you wanna be at, and it will be cheaper to go to 4 than to 3. Then Atlanta takes Fields and Miami takes whomever they want, unable to strike a deal. Then at 4 we get the QB of our choice and likely at least an additional 2 this year and possibly more, but certainly another premium pick next year.
Is it a smart idea? Of course not. It’s dangerous as freak. But if it worked out JD would be a damned impressive looking GM
-

If we want Lance or Fields, or if we think all 4 quarterbacks are similar, trading back to 4 and taking a QB could make sense.
In that case, whichever QB we take would have been #1 on our board according to JD in his press conference.
-

Depending on the package you could get from Atlanta you could make the argument Lance + an extra 1 and 2 is worth more than Wilson straight up. Or if Atlanta is absolutely in love with Fields, all the better.
-
The optics of trading out of 2, drafting a TE and passing on all of the QB prospects is pretty bad.
I'm assuming in that scenario Darnold is the guy going into next year with a vet added for "competition." If he doesn't have a great year after passing on those QBs for a TE, JD is going to have to answer a lot of questions.
At this point its Wilson or bust for me at 2 as I highly doubt Watson or Wilson will be traded to the Jets.

Keeping Sam is like my 3rd or 4th preference. Lets say you do keep Sam, trading down means you better get a WR. Hell, even a CB. theres like 4 TE's who can be taken in the 3rd to 4th who will be suitable depth. Id much more prefer Chase or Smith at WR and a 4th rd TE then Pitts and a 4th rd WR

I could rattle off plenty of great receivers taken after the 1st round too. If you think Pitts has a great chance of being the next stud receiving tight end, he is worth a high pick. Just as if you think the WRs are going to be the next stud WRs.
I think Chase is a stud and I would take him first. After Chase, I think Pitts is the next best skill player. Tie would go yo the WR but I think he is a better prospect than Waddle and Smith.
However I would rather take Wilson or another QB over those guys. I would want to trade back further down from 4 before I take Pitts or Sewell or anyone else.

Taking a 5'10", 180-lb receiver and a running back in the 1st round and ignoring the fact we had the worst QB play in the NFL last year seems sub-optimal.
That said, if Deshaun Watson isn't traded before the draft, I like the trade to maintain flexibility going forward to get him later.

I will take the trade but switch up the picks. I am okay with one of the big 3 WRs or Pitts with the first pick. I dont think they go RB with any pick of the first 2 days seeing what the 49ers did with less heralded RBs. I cannot argue with the rest of the positions. Plus having 3 first rounders will put us in good position if we need to go QB next year

The Jets need to consider taking Kyle Pitts No.2 overall:

I think Pitts has a chance to be special, but.... to draft him straight up at 2, you’d have to think he’s going to be one of the best TEs to ever play the game. And that he doesn’t need to become a dominant blocker to do it
-

I’d say this. I think Cowherd is worse because he actually believes the excrement he says. I’m fairly confident Skip Bayless is playing the controversial poopchute because it’s better for his ratings

Is Ojulari a fit for our defense? I was under the impression he was too small to be a full time down lineman and more than likely would transition to standing as a 3-4 OLB rusher. Isn’t he like 245 LBs?

Interior OL is my preference at 23
Or maybe Kadarius Toney if we don't get any decent WRs in FA
Or even CB
Not edge. Not at 23

I 100% agree. This team has to surround the QB with talent. If a top tier WR isn't added in FA, I'll be very annoyed if WR isn't the pick at 23 or 34. Pair Wilson or whoever with Mims and another young receiver to grow with.

Either 23 or 34 needs to be offense. I don't necessarily need both, but I'm also hoping we make some additions in FA.

I am utterly useless at evaluating CBs to be fair this isn’t different than most positions but I understood there to be a very large gap between Horn and Stokes and that Stokes might go in round 1 purely because of the number of teams needing corners rather than him actually being a round 1 talent

Two WRs there is too much . Especially considering we can go get a good starter then address CB earlier in the draft

Radunz is a legit option at 34, but I personally would assume we would find an interior guy. I don't know him well enough to say if he can kick inside or not.
Iffy is a solid CB. I think he has a chance to be a starter in the league. I love all 3 of the Cuse secondary guys this year, Cisco, Iffy and Trill Williams. Cisco is a gambler, and needs to be more disciplined but the dude will take the ball away. Trill is your big play maker, and Iffy is the most talented cover man. Not flashy, just consistent. I'd be excited if we drafted any of the 3.
I have never been all that excited about any of the St. Brown gang.

I know it's a huge hole right now, but we just need good players everywhere.
I like the mid-round corners more than anyone that SHOULD be available at 34...unless someone like Stokes slips out of the first.
Adebo and Melifonwu are really good scheme fits. I also like Bossman Fat.
Elijah Moore/KD Toney/Dyami Brown would be great in our offense. Brown makes a ton of sense because he's coming from a similar scheme to BYU's. He is a hell of vertical threat, which we don't have.
-
Obviously we can't go into 2021 with our current corners, but LB is a huge concern for me too.
Jamin Davis would be a building block player in this scheme. We need LBs that can run and cover.

Everyone acting like 1-2 of our first 3 picks need to be defense are fools....if (when) we take a QB at 2, let's for once surround him with some talent right from jump street and use our next 2 picks on offense too plz.
Are we going to suck at corner next year? Yeah, but excuse me if I'm not quite concerned about covering the Chiefs weapons in the AFCCG just yet and would rather not freak up another talented QB...
Love the start of this mock..

I thought we were against AVT (that early) and felt he was a bit soft overall?
There was a huge run on tackles and someone actually moved ahead of me for Creed Humphrey, which was surprising.
I took AVT based on how the board fell. Caleb Farley was still available and I considered Jayson Oweh for the potential alone, but we've gotta try to protect the QB and run the football better.
AVT will help in the run game quite a bit. Zone scheme will allow for some soft-ish play.

I always chuckle when I see statements like this when someone posts a mock (and I do it too for sure). Like we wouldn't be tap dancing in May if that was our draft just because we disliked one selection, or would have preferred player A over Player B of the same position at spot C.
We'd be all kinds of excited about the value we got later in the draft.
-

While CB is a huge need... why complain about surrounding Wilson with talent on the OL? Understandable if you would prefer a different pick on the OL, but not freaking up Wilson is a much higher priority than fielding capable corners.
I don't care if the opposing team throws for 400 yards every game if our young QB can stand in a clean pocket the majority of the time.

I'd love a stud pass rusher, and it's a good use of a premium selection should there not be a corner we want.
I just don't know if Ojulari fits the Saleh mold (size wise) of a pass rusher. I would assume he'd be looking for more of a Kwitty Paye type (size wise) guy opposite Lawson, but maybe I'm just off my rocker.

I worry a bit about Schrager's mocks as he is supposedly plugged in and talking to teams about contexts. I want no part of Moore in the early rounds. Dude might be special, but he is so small and I just have so many concerns about him. I also believe he'd be on the board at 34 anyways.
I would much rather grab a CB, pass rusher, OL at that spot.

I've been thinking recently about the possibility of an RB at pick 34... Are we sure that Etienne or Harris wouldn't be worth it at that pick simply because positional value isn't great? I understand the current offensive system doesn't need elite talent at the position to generate production, but if either player is there, I might like that pick at 34.
If both are those next RBs to enter the elite tier of Zeke, Kamara, Henry, Saquon, CMC, I think they'd be more useful to Wilson's development than any defensive player. I'd love to add to the WR group, but an elite RB would probably hold more value than a #4 WR or a future slot WR.
*Disclaimer: with this in mind, IOL comes first and foremost and is my preferable pick at 23.

Obviously DL comes first.
I really doubt either RB would be there at 34.
I think we are fine at WR, but a good slot WR would make sense as Crowder's replacement in 2022.
Really need a corner.

That SI article from yesterday had Douglas talking about the importance of surrounding a rookie QB with strength everywhere else so they don't have to win games on their own, and he specifically mentioned the run game. I don't know how Lafleur feels about having a feature back but it doesn't seem like something that would be especially surprising if it happened.

Yeah this is kind of what sparked my question. Putting an elite talent at RB seems like a better way to surround your young QB with talent than drafting a CB or LB.

Well, the counter argument to that is that an effective run game doesn't necessarily require an elite running back, and that a defense that returns the ball to the QB with shorter fields and doesn't force him to chase multi-score deficits actually relieves a huge amount of pressure.
I don't have a particularly strong opinion either way, a couple of my favourite players ever were running backs so I'll never complain about having a special talent there. I just don't know if it's especially valuable overall to the team we think we're going to be.

For sure. I won't pretend to be smart enough to know if or how that would work in the offensive scheme we're likely to be implementing, but given my fanboying for LdT I'm not going to object. I love all purpose running backs.

Najee Harris favored to be first RB drafted at -150 next is Etienne at +200
ETN bet is intriguing
Here's some more odds:
First CB drafted:
Suratin -250
Horn +200

First Non QB to be drafted:
Pitts +150
Sewell +150
Chase +250
First Def Player Drafted:
Parsons +150
Surtain +150
Paye +400
Horn +700

I feel like Parsons is probably the draft day faller that happens every year. With so much less information and insight available compared to previous years it's going to be harder to get under the skin of the locker room problems and really believe that they're behind him or at least fixable, and with him opting out of 2020 there isn't even a bunch of recent highlight reel shininess for a front office to convince themselves on.
Apparently his coach at Penn State in 2019 is at the Giants now, so maybe that's a destination. Can't see the first ten picks all being offense though.

This. We can't go defense then rb. If we go qb, guard, rb I won't complain

Unless someone at another position unexpectedly falls, I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't take a guard and a corner with our second and third picks.
-
Entire gord draft.
-

I just want a guard with pick 2 or 3. I can live with putting a pass rusher above corner, maybe 1 or 2 other positions as well.
Also interested to see if there is a kicker worth drafting in the sixth.
-
i would totally love to see us forsake the defensive side of the ball completely and focus enirely on offense, but i know it's not going to happen
i would so much prefer to get the QB timeline/offensive optimization part of it done first and done asap, suffer through a horrible defense, and then shift our focus to that side of the ball once we have our QB tucked in developmentally.
i'm barely over 30 but it feels like i've gone through lifetimes of 'we didn't focus on offense enough and broke our prospect QB before we could even give him a shot and had a sucky team as a whole, but hey at least we had a halfway decent defense to fall back on' already

Trying to peg taking a position with a specific pick is a fool's errand.
The roster is relatively bare anyway. Just bring in talented players. (Okay, no more iDLs, but anything else on offense or defense is probably acceptable)
-

We need to use our premium picks on premium positions:
QB, WR, EDGE, and CB
As we all know, guards can be found in the later rounds.

Its the most abundant position in the league besides running back and off ball linebacker and its not necessary to win.

If by some unholy miracle Jamar Chase was sitting on the board at 14, are you telling me you wouldn't orchestrate a move to 14 to land him? I'd do it in a nano-second.
An elite WR1 is absolutely a premium player.
If you are asking me if we had the option of Kadarius Toney, Rashad Bateman or Jaycee Horn or Azeej Ojulari at 23, I'm picking the CB or Edge player, because I'm not sure Toney and/or Bateman (or Terrace Marshall or whomever else) is going to be a dominant #1 WR. But if JD feels a WR is about to be an elite playmaker for our new QB at 23, that's absolutley worth a premium pick based on the talent we have on our roster right now. Hands down.
-
An elite WR1 is absolutely a premium player.
Well obviously because elite and premium are close to synonyms.
But the wr position isn't a premium position in the league. When was the last time a top 5 wr in the league won the superbowl? Please don't say tyreek hill.
That is a hypothetical thats not happening for a multitude of reasons, but even so I wouldn't trade this years draft capital for it.
More talent on the line and at other skill positions will help zach wilson out more than replacing Denzel Mims with Chase.
Hell even drafting an edge rusher that can keep games close will do more good this year for zach then upgrading mims to chase

Larry fitzgerald and Julio Jones dragged their teams to super bowls in the last ten years. Larry nearly won the cardinals that game until Santonio Holmes made one of the greatest circus grabs ever. And we all thought the Falcons were winning that game at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Giving Zach Wilson elite level weapons will help him a ton. It’s arguable how much more it will help him to have a pass rusher or a corner than the upgrade to Chase, but as I said in the other thread I don’t see any value selection for the OLine at 23.
Just because I can, let’s play a scenario game, you tell me which scenario is preferable to you, and which situation you find to be significantly better for Zach Wilson / his development
2. Zach Wilson
23. Greg Newsome
34. Creed Humphrey
66. Jabril Cox
Or
2. Zach Wilson
23+34. Jamar Chase
66. Trey Smith
Sadly for my side of this arguement, I don’t believe Chase will be in striking distance. I expect him to be off the board by 7.
-
When was the last time a top 5 wr in the league won the superbowl? Please don't say tyreek hill.
Tom Brady chose Tampa because of their receiving corps.
A healthy Mike Evans is a top five receiver in the league.
-
Why is Mims being replaced in all of these situations?
Both Corey Davis and any of the top receivers (Chase/Smith/Waddle) can play in the slot.
Jamison Crowder is the odd man out.
-
QB is in its own tier. Then OT, CB, edge rusher, and elite pass catcher are next on the list. I would even throw someone like Pitts in there if he can be the next Kelce or Gronk or Gates.
Guard can be addressed later but right now we are pretty weak at guard. You need to hit at least 1 starter at the position for 2021. If there are guys they trust in the scheme in rounds 3 or 4 that can play right away, that's fine, but if they are wrong, they should be criticized.
-

Thank you.
And as an aside.... if Crowder is the odd guy out and we don’t want to keep him/pay him this year, we might be able to flip him for a day 3 pick this year or next.
-

There are atleast 10 other recievers in the league who are as good as Evans. Which makes my point that wt is not a premium position

I didn’t argue Holmes was.
And you can’t be seriously saying the Cardinals and Falcons lost their respective super bowls because of Fitz and Jones. Those teams came extraordinarily close to a ring, seconds for the Cardinals and minutes for thee Falcons. Which is infinitely closer than we’ve been in 50 years
-
There are atleast 10 other recievers in the league who are as good as Evans. Which makes my point that wt is not a premium position
And we don’t have ANY of those guys you can argue is better than Evans. Hell Corey Davis is now our best WR. Please raise your hand if you want to argue he’s a top 25 receiver? How about top 20? Top 15?
We don’t have an elite guy, thus if one is there, go freaking get him.
-
I could get behind this
So it’s cool if we give up 34 for Chase as long as we get back a 5 for Crowder? What if we have to wait a year for the 5, you still cool with that?
-

There is not a single receiver in the league with his skillset.

Jamison Crowder is the odd man out.
Yeah, after his contract expires

There's also the possibility that the Jets can use ammo from next year to move up from 23. I wouldn't be opposed to using the picks we got from Darnold to move up to the top 12 or so if Pitts or Chase falls (hell, even Sewell). I would think 23, Carolina's 2nd and maybe pick 66 could get us inside the top 12. I would do that in a heart beat.
Imo, any elite pass catcher is significantly more useful to this team and Wilson's development than a CB or an off ball LB.
I honestly can't believe how many people are scoffing at the idea of needing to surround Wilson with playmakers because the defense has a few holes. This team has spent pretty much the entire previous decade using premium picks on the defense all while ignoring to place talent around Sanchez/Geno(lol)/Darnold. Give me ETN, trade up for Chase or Pitts, draft Toney, whatever scenario plays out... just add talent around the QB.

Kiper's two round mock:
Zach Wilson
Greg Newsome
Travis Etienne
I see a lot of NYJ fans on Twitter complaining about using 34 on a RB. Etienne is one of the best receiving backs to enter the NFL in a while. He is more of a weapon than just a true RB.
It would be a very good pick.

Etienne is one of the best pass catchers in the draft, regardless of position. I'd be okay with drafting him at 34 because he will help the passing game immediately.
He has the skillset to be a more explosive version of Alvin Kamara.

Marshall is 3 years younger, but it wouldn't make sense to draft him unless we're putting Corey Davis in the slot.
If we're drafting a pass catcher early, it needs to be YAC player.
-
Etienne is a great running back, and we have a desperate need at running back. I don't like investing a lot of capital into the position, but I can stomach a RB at 34 if they're elite, and Etienne might be.
And any running back we draft that early needs to be a pass catcher.

I would be plenty pleased with that as our first 3 picks. Like you I like Etienne more. I also think that we don't stick and pick at both 23 and 34, one of those two will be traded (either up or down) IMO.

A trade up would be nice. Normally i don't advocate for trade-ups, but for once we actually have enough draft capital over the next 2 years to sustain that hit. Let's hope the board falls into our favor.

Of course it was. But if we have a potentially elite edge on the board at 23, I'd expect us to take that guy because he'd almost certainly be the best player on our board, and we don't exactly have it solved. Is it serviceable to above average? I expect so. Are we trotting out elite defensive players for our defensive HC? Nope.
I agree we should prioritize offense, but if we have a top 15 grade on Ojulari, and think he's the best edge guy in the draft by a mile, and our top rated offensive player is a top 35 player, you have to take the talent. Our team is a walking disaster, and needs youth everywhere. I hope the talent gap between offense and defense is very close at 23, or that we even have the chance to drop back a bit to 28 or so, but I think if we stick at 23, it's probably a defensive guy. 34 is likely our next offensive player.

Aaron Maybin wasn't bad because of his size. He had no pass rushing moves and he couldn't defend the run.
Ojulari is arguably more powerful than every pass rusher in this draft aside from Kwity Paye. I would also take Paye at 23.

They won't hate it as much as the one I did, which was predicated upon keeping Darnold. (It started before he was traded.) I ended up with:
2: Ja'Marr Chase
23: Wyatt Davis
34: Travis Etienne
66: Ifeatu Melifonwu
86: Baron Browning

I don't remember the Jets sending anyone of note down to the U of Miami pro day.
Apparently all 32 teams had scouts there, but only 6 sent notable personnel - Belichick, Judge, Flores, Keim, Spielman, Robinson (Titans).
-
2. Zach Wilson - QB - BYU
23. Greg Newsome II - CB - Northwestern
34. Jaelan Phillips - EDGE - Miami (FL)
All of the OL went crazy high again. AVT went 11 to the Giants. Humphrey, Dickerson, and Darrisaw were all gone by 34. Phillips was BPA.
Traded 66 to Dallas for Michael Gallup

My Giants buddy thinks their FO is in love with Jaelan Phillips and Greg Rousseau at 11.

TDN, not happy with the way OL fell. Put Mayfield at gord.
2. Zach Wilson, QB
23. Kwity Paye, EDGE
34. Kadarius Toney, WR
66. Jalen Mayfield, OL
86. Kenneth Gainwell, RB
-
Not sure how I feel about Paye over Ojulari.
Paye is almost three years older than Ojulari.
Gainwell is very good.

Another one, think I did better this time.
2. Zach Wilson QB
23. Jaelan Phillips EDGE
34. Creed Humphrey GORD
66. Jabril Cox LB
86. Trill Williams CB

I'm interested to see if Joe Douglas spends any premium picks on interior linemen
It's completely against his strategy of drafting premium positions with those picks

In doing a few of these mock simulators, that's the issue I've seen. No guards seem to be a good value when it's the Jets' time on the clock, even in the 3rd round. Just a weird quirk. The best option might be moving up for Jenkins or AVT in the mid-late teens.
-

Both are worth moving up for because they can play tackle and guard

He's been here one draft. I'm not sure we completely know his draft strategy.
The guy also drafted a safety with his only other day 2 pick, and he drafted a punter.

What does using a late rounder on a punter have to do with how he spends his premium picks?

It doesn't necessarily, but you're making a judgment off literally 2 draft picks.
You could also argue that Douglas spends premium picks on positions of need, since OT and WR were our 2 biggest needs last season.
Douglas hasn't been here long enough for us to say anything definitive about his draft philosophy other than he likes making trades.
-
It doesn't necessarily, but you're making a judgment off literally 2 draft picks.
No, I'm not.
There's tons of content out there about how Douglas values using high picks on premium positions. Cimini hinted at us eying edge rushers over interior lineman at 23 because of that philosophy.
From 1996 to 2018, Ozzie Newsome drafted two interior linemen with first round picks: Haloti Ngata (NT) and Ben Grubbs (OG).
-
Ben Grubbs (first round) and Chris Chester (second round) are the only two IOLs Newsome spent high picks on.
They got Marshal Yanda in the third round of the same draft as Grubbs.
---
I used the same argument for Rex. If you're such a damn good evaluator of defensive line, then why use high picks on it? JD played OL. He scouts OL. Go find some value.

I agree with this when it comes to roster building.
If you think you're an elite OL scout, prove it and use resources elsewhere.
If your coach thinks he can coach up cornerbacks in this system (or pick whatever position you like), prove it and use resources elsewhere.

I don't see how he's even draftable at that size. Maybe he gets a call day 3 if teams think he can hang another 15lbs on his frame and not lose any speed, but he's just too small at 149 to be a viable NFL player.

Not many NFL d backs will be able to cover him
If they can catch him, he’s in trouble
Tougher than Berrios though

He’s the same height as Berrios. A competent NFL training team would be able to get some more muscle on him.

Sure, but he's going to need 15-20lbs to be in sensible territory and the concern is how much that will hurt his speed.

If you can get him in the 5th round or later, there's not much risk.
Get him the ball in space. If he gets destroyed out there, oh well. If he becomes an occasional playmaker, it's a homerun.
He was ALWAYS open at Louisville. He has elite change of direction.

I can see him as a day 3 punt, his production in college merits it. I just don't know how you use him, because you can't use most of the route tree. Anything through the middle and he's going to actually die. You're pretty much relying on him being able to avoid contact at the LOS and use his speed outside to get open, because he's not winning anything that he has to compete for.
-
I just don't know how you use him, because you can't use most of the route tree.
You manufacture touches for him. Put him in the backfield as a decoy. Run reverses and jet sweeps. Throw him screens. Send him down the seam.

Yes, probably. The bigger question is whether you do that deal if you're the Dolphins. I think they have a clear development plan in place and I'm not sure that surrendering all that draft capital they've built up for a player who's going to be 33 this season really fits with it.

The more interesting aspect of this would be.... how would Jets fans feel the moment after the trade is executed? Would we be thrilled they dumped all that capital into one player? Or terrified we now have to deal with Russel freaking Wilson?

Yeah, that's a good one actually.

I don't know who to pick, but I'm here for the fluff articles when we do.

Why not?
Because we have bigger holes that weren't addressed in FA. I hope we avoid EDGE altogether....at least until the latter rounds.

Why not?
A lot of these edges can be special, but they don’t have dominant traits that make anybody a sure fire top 10 pick. If we pick a guy at 23 it’s because we think he can be special

Nobody said "drafting for need". But you're going to take an EDGE over someone like Tevin Jenkins or Greg Newsome? C'mon now.
Why can't we address EDGE later in the draft?
And yes, i would be fine with a WR at 23....because our offense has been a pile of excrement since you were jerkin it to Lena Dunham in your high school gym lockeroom. I want this offense to score some points for once.

Feiler is solid but he isn't a fit in wide zone
Zeitler likely wanted to go to a ...good... team

I don't blame Douglas for not fixing our interior offensive line at FA....there were 2 gords worth going after (Thuney and Zeitler), and both didn't want to play here.

I didn't read his mock, so not sure if he did trades, but I'd assume not.

Chris Simms is only good for quarterback evals.

Lamar Jackson fell to 32... its not impossible, but I highly doubt it'll happen.

No one expected Lamar to go high.

One last 7 round mock...this time with a trade. I traded back with the Falcons for #4, and their 2022 1st and 2nd rounder.

I like how you made a completely unrealistic and ridiculous trade, but it still doesn't affect this mock one bit.

I keep forgetting Samuel exists. Not sure I like him at 23 but I'd be pretty happy with him at 34.

Kind of mailed it in a bit on the last 2 picks. Don't know a ton about either guy.

Evan McPherson and Jason Pinnock sound like a pair of Scottish First Division soccer players.

Etienne at 23 makes me dislike this almost regardless of the rest.
Need a weapon. Right now, noone on the offense scares a defense or causes a DC to plan a gameplan around them. Etienne can be that guy. When there was talks of the Jets keeping Darnold, I would have been okay with trading down to 5 and taking Pitts at TE where many people would've argued it was too early for a TE. Do not think of him as an RB. Think of him as a weapon for a young QB who will take a lot of pressure off of him.
Good draft...not a fan of Dickerson though. His injury history scares me.

Mentioned earlier, I always have a soft side for players coming off of injuries. He may be the best IOL in the draft and was doing cartwheels at his pro day. Good enough for me.
-
In DJs final mock he has us with Zach Wilson and Etienne but mentions us as a team that could go up or down. He had us passing on Tevin Jenkins (who went 24 to Pitt) which surprised me.
But we know DJ knows things about JD and his ideas. I’d say Etienne is a serious option, but hopefully more at 34 than 23
-
I'm fine with Etienne at 23. Dude's a gamebreaker.
-
Seems like there is some Etienne smoke. The need is certainly there. But the bar for him to be worth that pick is higher than most positions.
The case for Etienne is we badly need playmakers and we have awful running backs. Etienne has a chance to be really good. But I'd rather get a player at a more important position. Much more comfortable with him at 34.

I feel like Etienne is more of a flex than a true RB. If we take him I won't be angry.

He is an exceptional receiver, which would be a crutch for Wilson to lean on.
ETN was banged up most of 2020. His 2019 tape is a true indicator of how good he can be.

I love how we were all in on beefing up the offensive line in the draft. LJF posts a mock with no OL until the 4th round and we love it.
I would be fine with that trade, but then we HAVE to take an OL at 34. Give me Leatherwood or Humphrey or Dickerson or whomever is there.
I'd be pretty livid if we didn't take an OL until the 4th round, even though I like Green a lot (based on what I read).
