I'm sure they are great dogs but something about designer breeds just irks me.

All dogs are "designer" dogs. Pedigrees exist because our ancestors selectively bred dogs to encourage particular traits and discourage others in order to get a dog that was ideally suited to a specific task or role. I don't really see any difference between that and crossbreeding a poodle with a lab or an Aussie or a Yorkshire terrier to achieve a dog with a particular set of characteristics.

What's more, you'll generally get healthier dogs. Crossbreeding helps mitigate the inbreeding and health risks prevalent in many pedigree lineages; for example, the rate of hip dysplasia is far lower in goldendoodles and labradoodles because while goldens and labs are amongst the highest risk breeds, poodles are far less susceptible and thus crossbreed variants inherit (to varying degrees) some of the poodle physiology that helps reduce the risk of its occurrence.

I have an old Boston Terrier right now.  He's a little poopchute, hates other people and dogs, but loves his family.  He's like an angry little Dowell Loggains.

Whenever he kicks the bucket, I'll probably go petless for a while.  Someday I'd like to adopt a mutt that's so freaking ugly you can't help but laugh at him.

I don't know why you thought any of this would change my opinion.
