The word cup in no way implies a handle.
Or indeed a cup at all.
But then the word "cup" is being used in a different context there, where it refers to a type of knockout competition the prize for which used to be a cup-like trophy. Like, for example, the Jules Rimet Trophy which is in fact a cup of sorts.
Or a chalice, if you will.
