This morning when I got to the bus stop there was a piece of paper taped to it that said the bus wouldn't be stopping there because of an NYPD funeral and that I'd have to catch it at another stop over a mile down the street. So I started walking, and every bus stop I passed on the way there had the same time, and no buses were in sight. Then I finally got to that stop and it also had the same sign... and so did every bus stop past it. So I just kept walking.
Finally I saw one of them and I was fortunate to be just reaching a stop when it came by. I got on and it was full of all the people I see every morning. So I had no idea if the bus made all of its regular stops in spite of the signs, or if all of these people just happened to know where to find this magical temporary detour stop. Anyway, I rode the bus the remaining 0.2 miles (after walking 1.5) to the subway and felt like an poopchute.
I still don't know what the deal with the funeral was. When I was walking, I passed the big spanish church and the sidewalk was packed with local news crews waiting for something, but there was no sign of any procession yet. Officer Ramos's funeral isn't until tomorrow. So they put up signs everywhere saying that public transportation was going to be shut down all day on that street because of the wake in the afternoon. Good thing I'm getting out of town tonight for the next few days because there's a solid chance some assholes could make things messy tomorrow.
