I temped for the Postal service in a warehouse for the Holidays and on Christmas Eve I stayed until after 3 in the morning. Why? Time and a half, Babbie.

It sucks, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Iggy is right though, this whole Black Friday nonsense was bad enough a few years ago and it's really gotten out of hand now, some stores starting at 6 pm on Thanksgiving. It's really just a microcosm of what's wrong with a large segment of our country and statement of how wrapped up into commercialism people are nowadays...but that's an argument for another thread.

Again, it sucks. I agree that it does, but a lot of jobs are shitty. I just don't know what people want done.

Don't participate.

Unfortunately there are enough people who don't give a excrement, and will go shopping on Thanksgiving, forcing people to work on Thanksgiving, because the company decided that was an appropriate day to have a big sale. It's like a retarded snake eating its own tail.

When you are low man on the totem pole you get stuck working holidays.  That's just how it works in retail.  You might have to work Thanksgiving your first year, but you can almost certainly request it off the next year.  Holiday skeleton crews are almost entirely made up of new people.

Most call centers are 24/7/365 these days.  I have never had to force anyone to work on a holiday.  The financial incentive always gets me more volunteers than I need.

Well, a lot of companies are already doing it.  Several retailers publicly refused to open on Thanksgiving, and public opinion polls show a majority of Americans hate the stores being open on Thanksgiving.  It's done for a minority of shoppers.

Now, what about the people who make those decisions?  Wouldn't it be fair for them to have to work as well?  They set up the massive holiday clusterfuck and then go spend the holidays with their families.  My father in law has a great policy.  He's the CEO of a hospital, where employees are an obvious necessity on holidays.  You know what he does?  He takes the morning on Christmas and Thanksgiving to go in and actually thank them and brings gifts.  That's for a necessary holiday worker.  The retail ones get treated like garbage and are threatened for wanting to even REQUEST time with their families.  It's not just shitty, it's sick.

If it annoys you it can be shoehorned in here.

No.  Thanksgiving was never a retail day until two years ago, and this year as stores are keeping regular hours, employees are being told they must work.  There are long term employees being forced to work, and most retailers are not allowing requests for the day off.  That's not just how it works.  It's a new thing, and it's totally unnecessary.  Christmas Eve?  Necessary shopping day.  Thanksgiving?  Hardly.

Dude, 6 PM I don't have as much of a problem with.  A lot of stores are EXTENDING their hours.  There are stores opening at 6 AM.  6 PM?  Eat an early meal with the family and enjoy most of the day.  6 AM shift and you're working early Black Friday as well.

Wow. 6 am? I haven't heard of that early. Target, Macys and stores like that all have a general 6 pmish start time next Thursday. I know one thing: I'll be fat and watching football at that time.

Kmart is the big one doing 6 AM, and they're refusing to allow requests.  You're going to have miserable people getting excrement on all day.  When I was in high school I worked for a year at a pizza place.  We were open Christmas Eve until 8 PM, but it was slow.  It was actually fun, and we were given stuff to work.  My sister in law works for Disney.  She worked Christmas because they were each given food, posters, and free movie passes.  It was an easy day.  These people are being told to give up their holiday for an unnecessary shopping day and excrement and mistreatment at the hands of the worst excrement this country has to offer.  Seriously, Black Friday doorbuster shoppers are freaking animals.

Yeah^^, I can't disagree with any of that. You could give free excrement away on Thursday or Friday and I still wouldn't go.

My aunt and uncle always host. He's a Giants fan but not really a hardcore football fan. It's that whole "this is about family togetherness, not watching the TV" thing.

My dad, my wife, and I would all gladly watch. My sisters don't care. My mom is against it.

I don't know if I'll ever live in a place big enough to host extended family, but you can bet there will be football on the TV.

Isn't that the truth. People have been trampled in the name of Black Friday, never will I be a party to that nonsense.

Apparently, it's common practice for companies to say you can not use personal time during the holidays. I know of several people where that's the case. The only thing is they're not required to work the actual holiday itself, so I guess that's ok. That said, there are no vacations at this time of the year and such.
