My daughter had soccer practice last night so I decided that since my boys and I are running a bunch of 5K or greater races this spring/summer, it would be better to run around the soccer field a bit than sit in a chair for an hour. Only made it a mile before my legs felt like they were going to give out. It's amazing, I can do an hour on the eliptical machine but then try and run a mile on an otherwise perfect night and I can't crack 12 minutes.  Going to need to ease into this one, I think.

Same here.  I don't exercise as much as I should, but in my mind I still have the stamina I had in high school.  Then I go out and try to jog and reality reminds me that I'm not 18.  Gotta keep going though, even if it's slow.

Mendelbaum!!! I didn't run last year because of a foot surgery but prior to that we ran all summer. Just takes a few weeks to ease back into it. The biggest thing for me for the first couple of runs is dealing with shin splints.

If you're getting shin splints:

- check your shoes aren't over worn and that they fit properly
- think about your gait, make sure you're not overstriding and heel striking
- don't run as far to start with, better to do short runs more frequently than long runs less frequently

Shin splints are caused by the lining between your calf and your tibia getting irritated - you want to reduce the impact and wear until your body gets back into the swing of things.

Thanks for the feedback.

The shoes were selected for me by our local running store 2 years ago- not an incredible amount of mileage on them and they are very comfortable.
Gate hasn't changed from what I can see.
Must be the distance. I think that a mile straight was too much to start. At my ripe age, easing back in is definitely the best practice.

Titty splints are caused by the lining between your moobs and your ribcage getting irritated - you want to reduce the impact and wear until your body gets back into the swing of things. I'd recommend a sports bra.

You can keep up the distance, but try doing walk/run until you're back in the groove. Alternate one minute running and one minute walking, then increase to 2:1, then 5:1, then 10:1 until you're ready to run consistently. The problem with inflammation/irritation injuries like shin splints is that you can't run through them, you have to rest properly before they'll go away. I used to have the same problem with ITBS, and still do if I'm not careful with the longer distances.

Will you blast Skynyrd from the Camaro and provide bud disel for postgame? Non negotiable.
