Wilkerson's Contract Status

New thread just because its Wilk

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/34964/jets-notes-wilkersons-big-score-on-hold

Quote
1. Waiting game: Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson may not get that contract extension, after all. Like all first-round picks in the 2011 draft class, he could get burned by the fifth-year option in his contract.

Wilkerson signed a four-year contract, plus an option. It was widely assumed that Wilkerson and the other stars from that class would sign new, long-term deals after the third season, but an article by Jason Cole on National Football Post explains why that's not likely to happen. Turns out those fifth-year option salaries (based on a formula) aren't projected to be as big as anticipated, so it makes dollars and sense for teams to simply pay the option year instead of renegotiating a new contract. Teams have until May 3 to exercise the option.

In Wilkerson's case, the option is worth about $5.25 million. It could increase to about $6 million, but even that would be a bargain for the Jets. He's due to make $1.2 million in 2014, which means the Jets could have Wilkerson's rights for two years at about $7.2 million if they exercise the option. Let's stretch it further. They could hit him with a franchise tag of, say, $12 million in 2016, meaning they'd have him for three years at $19.2 million -- once again, a bargain for a player of his caliber. The NFP article, which surveyed 10 general managers and cap specialists, said they expect almost every first rounder in 2011 to be tendered for the fifth year rather than receive a long-term extension this year.

It stinks for Wilkerson and the others, but they're getting jobbed by a pro-management collective bargaining agreement, which went into effect for the 2011 draft. Yeah, the Jets still could do a long-term deal this year with Wilkerson, but because they hold the leverage, they'd demand a team-friendly deal. He could hold out, but the language in the CBA makes it difficult. Wilkerson, drafted 30th overall, would've been better off getting picked in the second round. Those players received straight, four-year contracts.

Frees up a crap ton of cap space for us.

Especially considering we can do the same thing with Coples and Richardson down the road

What I would like to see is an extension done this year, not a new deal, but a straight up extension, same salary this year, what his 5th year option bonus would be (the $5.25 million indicated in this article) and then added years for Wilk keeping him (ideally) in the $6-10 million a year range, with some flucatuation year by year.
Need a new one for a new board...

That's great news, and like dcm said, for our other picks as well.

Gotta give the guy some incentive take the deal now then.

If we were to extend him (which I doubt we will) ideally something like 6 years 7-7.5 million a year with like 30-35 million guaranteed would be pretty reasonable for both sides (although still quite favorable for us)

It would increase his cap number significantly this year, a little bit next year,  but then wed have him for a bargain the following few years.

Right now Wilk effectively has to play 3 years in a row on cheap 1 year contracts each year (right now he has 1 year left on his deal for like 1.3 million, then he would play next year on our 1 year option for 6~ million, then the following year on the tag)

Geno Atkins got a 6 year 9.4 million a year deal, and we have way way more leverage with Wilk.

Hopefully we take advantage of it.

Of course we could easily have Wilk play out this year for nothing, and still have significant leverage to iron out a deal over the next 2 years with his option + the tag after that

If they don't extend Wilkerson this offseason then holy excrement the Jets have an even bigger excrement-ton of dough to spend.

well, his cap # wouldn't effect this year. IT'd effect next year.

The extension would be for 2016. 2014 is the last year of his rookie deal (without the option) so the cap hit is paltry. 2015 would be option year and 2016 would be the extension year.

It doesn't mean we have more money this year.

I would like to see Wilkerson rewarded, and would create a well needed boost in morale in the Jets locker room.  I would also like an extension, but use the lower salaried years to buffer some of the signing bonus.

We could use the savings to bring Cro back doing the same thing with morale. The guys become a leader for the defense, even if he blew last year.

Please get some comparables before you spit out numbers.

We will have $50 million in cap space.  How much do you want to spend on Cro?

It's probably going to be very similar to the contracts of Geno Atkins, JJ Watt, and Calais Campbell.

Except Wilkerson is under contract for 1 million this year, then we have a 1 year option for the following year, then we can tag him.

So he might be a similar player, but different circumstances.

There would be 0 reason to give Wilkerson a contract similar to Campbell/Atkins THIS or NEXT year. If we were going to give Wilk that much cash, it would make more sense to make him play out this/next year on his cheap contracts, then give him his monster deal the following year with the threat of the franchise tag.

If were going to extend him now (when hes under contract cheap for potentially 2 years) then it has to be very team friendly to make any sense
