Interestingly I just what happens if you're actually over the cap. Apparently you get fined up to 5 million, draft picks docked, contracts get canceled.
So basically the Saints either need to kick the can down the road, which imo is absolutely freaking iditoic.
Or tear it down
They can help a little more by designating some of their cuts as post June 1, but they are still gonna have to trade or cut some big names they don't want to. If they tear it down, might as well trade some of their higher draft picks for assets in future years to cut down the rookie costs. Won't make much difference, but every little bit helps. From reading this:
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/agents-take-heres-how-saints-can-dig-out-of-2021-salary-cap-mess-potential-cap-casualties-and-restructures/ :
-They can get $23 million or so back by restructuring Brees to league minimum salary next year and making him a post June 1 retirement.
-$13 million by cutting Kwon Alexander.
-Janoris Jenkins, another $7 million.
-Malcolm Brown, $5 million.
-Latavious Murray $2.5 million.
-Could restructure Cameron Jordan to get $10 million
These moves would get them within a pube or 2 of the salary cap, but not accounting for rookies.
They could extend Ryan Ramscycksksk or Lattimore to do that. Have to extend one of them anyway, can't use tag on both.
They will also be right back at this excrement again next year, but they don't care.
