Losing Harris is addition by subtraction, you think it's any coincidence this defense has been killed by tight ends and the short pass religiously for six years now? He can't cover with a gun to his head and it kills the defense.

Assuming we replace him with someone who can do what he couldn't.

That whole concept has been lost on the Jets lately.

I'm not disagreeing that losing Harris is a good thing

But he's strictly a 3-4 guy

So getting rid of his bloated contract is a prime opportunity for us to convert to a 4-3

He has no contract now.  He's a free agent.

It doesn't fit.

Our personnel isn't tailor-made for either the 3-4 or the 4-3. In a 4-3 scheme, Sheldon, Wilkerson, and Harrison all are best fits inside, and some have thought Coples is best inside, too. In a 3-4 scheme, Richardson and Coples are tweeners, especially Coples. They're all good enough players where they could make it work in either scheme, but the personnel is best used in multiple fronts to take advantage of their versatility.

It fits very well actually.  A DL of Wilk, Sheldon, Snacks, and Coples will allow us to do what we've been doing without the ridiculous failures of QC standing up.  Our 34 was never at full strength because Rex never thought getting a passrusher was important, at least in a 43 Coples can focus his time on getting to the QB because him standing up never did anything for this team.  Coples is and was always a better fit as a 43 DE, it's just that if put into a 34 he would have been better of hand down than hand up.

Our LBs will be better off because Davis might actually be able to reach some of his potential.  He was never going to be a take on blockers type.  David Harris is a statue, he can make plays with guys running right at him, but he had no place here.  Our 34 OLBs have been garbage forever and are much harder to find than 43 LBs.

This point proves the importance of acquiring a talented LB in FA or the draft.

Or both if possible.  I'd love to see a youngster added to the middle of the defense (Perryman) and a vet outside.

Linebacker is definitely a need we don't talk about much. Davis is mediocre, though he could still improve, and who knows who will be around him next year. That would be a positive to playing more 4-3: hiding our weak linebacker group.

If we had 3 of Davis behind our DL we'd be fine.

He was a really good coach, I hate to see him go. That said, Bowles is bringing in a really good line coach as well.

That's disappointing, although the filth can't be too excited to see Bowles and the guy from Miami in charge of the Jets' DL with all of its talent, and Rex and Dunbar in charge of Buffalo and all of its talent. In fact, is there another division with as much defensive potency up front as the AFCE?

Yeah, that would do it. Not a soft defense to be seen there.
