The directors who will get me to watch their movies without having to tell me anything about them, right now, are:

- Nolan
- Von Trier
- Malick
- Tarantino
- Boyle
- Cronenberg
- Meadows

Honourable mentions to Wes Anderson, Fincher and Van Sant.
some of these guys are great, some have have never made a quality movie
My dad always says he's undefeated at tailgating

Maybe it's not I who doesn't know what he's talking about

None of them have never made a quality movie.  Meadows is closest.

I freaking hate Lars von Trier

I think his best movie was 14 years ago.

If I could go back in time, I would bring Puck with me and have him blow Von Trier's father right before he could cum inside of his mom.

that was mostly who my comment was directed to. Worst piece of excrement ive ever had to endure.

I exaggerated a little bit, I am by no means a film buff so I havent seen everything. Only malick movie ive seen is Thin red line, which was awesome. Never seen a von trier movie.

I've never seen a Shane Meadows movie.

I'm torn on Von Trier.  Part of me respects that he can make movies I find so unsettling (early Harmony Korine did that too) and part of me just doesn't enjoy being unsettled.  Melancholia was interesting, Dogville was outstanding, Antichrist was just disturbing, and I have a feeling I'm going to hate Nymphomaniac when I get around to it.

Six, in response to your point about Anderson maybe being past his prime... I think it's too soon to make that judgement.  I don't think The Master was as good as Blood or Punch Drunk Love, but I've rushed to judgments about declining directors before.

Wes Anderson for instance: after Darjeeling, I figured the only interesting idea he had left was to apply his style to an animated movie and then he'd put himself out to pasture like Tim Burton.  Then he came out with Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest, which were both on par with his best films, IMO.

Wes Anderson's animated feature WAS his best movie.

He's an absolute lady garden of a man who makes some really offensive movies, but he's always interesting.

I've never seen a Shane Meadows movie.

Buy, rent or torrent Dead Man's Shoes as soon as possible. Don't read anything about it, just get it and watch it.

Pretty surprised to see a separate thread for this movie, but for anyone who's interested I'm actually leading the digital advertising campaign planning for this title.  I've heard great things from the studio, and there is actually a screening going on this Saturday at Film Society of Lincoln Center. Tickets are open to the public and go on sale tomorrow morning at 10am.

I think I'll be going to the 5:30 showing.

Just saw this last night.  I wasn't a huge fan of the story, particularly the ending.  I never finished the book so I'm not sure how it compared.  That being said the acting was amazing.  Joaquin and Josh were unbelievable.  So many hilarious scenes.  Benecio Del toro was also great in his limited role.
