Typical, other teams trying to make the Patriots decisions as easy possible.

Hopefully it was for like a 6th or something knowing that the Pats would be forced to cut him in a few days

Quote
Texans acquired QB Ryan Mallett from the Patriots in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
Seemingly on the block since the first day he arrived in New England in 2011, Mallett has been heavily connected to the Texans since they named former Pats OC Bill O'Brien head coach. Mallett adds more depth to the Texans' uninspiring trio of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and Tom Savage, but isn't an obvious upgrade. His acquisition should mean Keenum is sent packing. Despite his inexplicable name recognition, we wouldn't count on Mallett starting any games. He's attempted only four regular-season passes, and has never stood out in exhibition action.

Good call, dcm.  All of those fears that they'd spin him for a better pick like Cassel were horribly unfounded.  I hope Brady retires and Mallet has a couple good seasons right after in Houston.

LOL this is actually pretty great. Essentially a waste of a 3rd round pick for the Pats. Im glad the Pats didnt get nearly what they were hoping for.

Wow the Patriots got fleeced. His value was at least two second rounders or a late first

I bet the Pats could have gotten more had they let him  become a UFA after the season, with probably a 4th or 5th round Compensatory Pick

But I guess wasting a roster spot, and then having to wait an extra season to get the comp wouldn't have been worthwhile for them.

How do you figure they would get a 4th or 5th round comp pick for a player whose total career NFL career passing stats are 4 pass attempts for one completion of 17 yards?

Also, boston.com is reporting the trade as being for a conditional 7th round pick in 2016.

That player has 4 attempts because he's on Tom Bradys team.

The guy would have been a healthy QB in his 20s who was projected to go relatively early in the draft, that learned from Bill Belichick and Tom Brady for 4 years before becoming an unrestricted free agent

With how important QB is in the NFL you don't think teams would have taken a flier on him?

2nd string QB's get contracts for 4-5 million a year purely to be backups

I imagine someone like Mallet certainly could have gotten at least a 2-3 year deal for 6-8 million a year as an UFA.

When did they start allocating comp picks based on what the player would play like if he wasn't Tom Brady a backup?
