Certainly dont think they got swindled

Wait didn't he just retire? Or was that just to get out of Dallas?

So how long before the QB controversy starts?
Need a new one for a new board...

They cut him.  He didn't retire.  He said he was going to retire so he could get cut.

That doesnt make sense.

If he retires they wouldnt have had to pay him, and he would have saved them a few million in cap space

It sounds like Dallas leaked that he wanted to retire to put the thought in his head (or maybe he was actually considering it)

The most interesting part about this move is that they signed him now (1~ week before the season)

Which makes it look like they have no faith in their young QB

And even better they dont have a 1st round pick next year.

That part certainly lends to a warm and fuzzy feeling

In march.

I seriously doubt there will be another player signed in the next week that gets a more than $2 million this year (not counting incentives). The Bills vastly overpaid because they felt they had to have Orton in house to try and push Manuel, or take over when he fails very soon.

I hate this reasoning. Just because a new backup QB is in town doesn't mean the starter all of a sudden goes, "Oh excrement time to take this seriously now!"

You do have to admit players without competition don't care about throwing interceptions. Manuel is really the next Peyton Manning when Orton shows up, he was just playing possum. You know because there wasn't competition.

I'm not disagreeing with you in any way. But the Bills clearly felt that they needed Orton in house. Why they waited until final cuts day to do it is pretty surprising though.

Not if they were waiting for his value to drop. I'd imagine his value decreases as the preseason goes on, unless a team loses a QB or something. A veteran QB coming into an open competition would most likely cost more.

They've probably been negotiating with him since EJ played like excrement in the 4th preseason game.

They still paid him 5 million, I'd love to know what kind of savings they got...
