Mock Trial

I don't know if anyone's familiar with this but I did mock trial in college and this year they asked me to come back as a coach.

I did one in high school.  I was assigned the role of the foreman, so I just convinced everyone that we should split on purpose so we could finish earlier.

Do you remember if that was a civil or criminal case?

Criminal

pretty sure it was a kidnapping/murder trial

I mainly remember one kid was supposed to come up with reasonable evidence and he printed up pictures of uzis, AK-47s, and glocks.  The victim was stabbed.

Sounds like high school mock trial.

hung jury

I feel like it would have been more convincing if you convinced everyone to acquit, how long could that have possibly taken?

In a criminal trial the burden of proof is beyond a reasonable doubt so if the jury was unable to come to a unanimous verdict the result would be a mistrial. In many cases it's easier to have a hung jury than to come to a unanimous verdict.

Even in a mock trial where you're trying to convince everyone to finish up so they can get out early?

I figured a unanimous "not guilty" after a brief deliberation would be a lot more believable than a hung jury after 10 minutes.

In mock trial there is no sentencing phase, so the verdict doesn't matter.
