Increased enforcement of defensive contact penalties
« on: August 16, 2014, 09:11:39 AM »
Judging from the preseason so far, this season is going to be a flag-filled slopfest.  Way to go NFL.

32 penalties for 295 yards in the Saints/Titans game last night.

There were 29 called penalties tonight in Foxboro. 21 accepted. 11 came in the first quarter. Players noticed. Especially defensive players.

Over/Under for flags thrown in the Jets game tonight at 25.5

Im going with over

On a side note, do you think this rule is gonna hit the Jets more/less than other teams ?

On one hand our defensive backs are below average, so one could argue that the front 7 becomes more important and the secondary less important (since DBs are allowed to do less)

On the other side, we tend to run more man coverage than most teams, and I think the rule changes would impact a man coverage team more than a zone coverage team (yes most teams run both man and zone coverage, but I think we run more man than most)

Not to mention this rule would likely benefit teams with strong/quick passing offenses more, and we arent either.

More on how teams are practicing for these gay rules

Quote

For example, the St. Louis Rams have told their defensive backs to hold tennis balls in their hands while covering receivers in portions of practice. Once the quarterback attempts a pass, they can drop the balls and make a play. The Cleveland Browns have gone a step further, as their defensive backs have been wearing kickboxing gloves to eliminate the temptation to grab. Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden missed an interception in one practice because his fingers weren't free to catch the ball.

It's going to be brutal to watch. There was a flag in the JAX game the other day that basically signaled every defensive back is screwed this year.
