Crushing our opponents should not be talked about.

Yeah, that's retarded.
"Wrong!"

Jets will win out and cruise to the superbowl.

I actually think finishing any worse than .500 at this point is disappointing enough that it could cost Rex his job. He'll be a victim of early success at that point. The only way I see Rex surviving 7 or less wins now is if it's all on Geno's shoulders. If Smith craps out and that's why we lose 5 or more then Rex has a built-in excuse for a one year show-me contract. For any other reason, I'm not sure Idzik won't take the opportunity to bring in a "his guy."

All that said, I predicted 8-8 before the season and I think we get there or 9-7 to finish out. Rex gets an extension, hopefully Geno is the guy and we get a big-time playmaker for him to throw to, upgrade the one OLB spot and the safety position, and push forward toward a title in 2015.

If this team crumbles because of the quarterback's play, Idzik will have an even greater excuse to move on from Rex Ryan.

He can bring in an offensive coach.

I hope Mornhinweg protects Smith and the Jets run the hell out of the ball.  We're going to have to beat teams like Carolina and Miami through the air though.

Now that my pre-season prediction of 4-12 can no longer be correct, I have decided to alter it based upon performance so far to the Jets finishing 12-4.

I'm keeping an eye on Josh McCown out in Chicago.

If he keeps doing what he's doing as a fill-in for Jay Cutler, he might be a solid option as a game-manager type if Geno Smith can't hold on to that top spot on the depth chart.

I know he's getting up there in age, but he has starting experience, and he's taking care of the football.

Valuable backup at the very least.

I would expect most to at least be realistic.

We have a guy talking about "crushing" teams and literally all of the NYJ wins this season are by a field goal, a touchdown, or less.

That's one guy.  You act like it's the entire thread.

He'd be a great backup, but I hope we draft another QB in 2014 regardless of how Geno finishes the season.

I'd take Josh McCown in Garrard's spot, and then a mid-to-late round QB prospect depending on how things end up.

If Smith continues to struggle, the Jets need to take a QB before the fourth round.

Jeff Mathews, Stephen Morris, Jimmy Garoppollo, David Fales, Brendon Kay, and Keith Wenning are some names to remember in the middle rounds.

If it's clearly because Geno himself "isn't the guy" you still think Rex will be out? I don't know, you could certainly be right but I'd hope not.

The Ryan/Mornhinweg combination works for me. As long as, like you said, they protect Geno while he's still maturing I think they're a good combination. If the kid really figures it out he's clearly got the physical talent to execute Marty's system. Give him some targets to throw to and get Goodson back next year for the rotation and the offense could be a potent combination with Rex's defense.

You think Simms isn't worth keeping as the third guy behind a McCown?

I'm by no means a "Let Simms start" guy, but he looks viable as a backup/learning guy to me.

It will just be more of the same from this regime.  Great defense, with an offense that can't take care of or move the football.

If Smith leads this team to 8-8 or higher, then Ryan is safe.

A 2-5 finish ends it though.

I'd have him compete with a rookie for that spot.

If Geno is making mistakes and unable to progress I think it would be unfair to pin on Rex considering Geno was Idzik's pick. I understand your line of thought though.

That said, if we end 2-5 I might be singing a completely different tune regardless of the reasoning anyway. It'll take effort to not win at least 3 of these last bunch so at least part of that blame would have to fall to Rex.

That's fair.

So here's a question. Let's say we're in the position for some reason (besides losing out and getting a top-7 pick) to draft a day one QB. Would you pull the trigger regardless of how Geno progresses? (I know it's still way too early to discuss this, but I'm just honestly curious.)
