Examining a decade's worth of drafts from 1999 to 2008, our high-octane NFL research department charted how many first-round picks by position started at least one or more games in Year Six for the team that selected them.

Offensive line is pretty stable.

But the sample size for guard and center is laughable.

I was surprised that DT was so bad. Maybe they just don't last that long? Or is there the same instability there as other positions like QB/WR?

Only seven were drafted during that decade though.

Interesting that CBs were drafted more than any other position.

I'm only looking at 2001 and 2002 for now, but look at the DTs that were drafted:

Gerard Warren
Richard Seymour
Damione Lewis
Marcus Stroud
Casey Hampton
Ryan Pickett
Ryan Sims
John Henderson
Wendell Bryant
Albert Haynesworth

It's not really a surprise that the more drafted positions have a lower success rate, the two are highly correlated. More chance of a bust at the position will lead to more vacancies, and more desire to draft high to minimise chances of a bust.

Also you're probably looking at only the most elite of prospects at non-premium positions, while teams will reach to get second-tier players at premium/playmaking positions.

Certain positions also have some versatility. There are plenty of tackles who became guards or played both and plenty of DEs that became OLBs. So I think there's a higher chance of those type of positions to stick.
