Why do they want to ban the shift? Surely it just encourages batters to be more versatile and develop the ability to hit to the other side. Seems dumb to ban defensive strategies like that.

It doesn’t, this has been talked about since it’s advent. Hitting the other way is hard to do and nearly impossible for the type of pull happy power hitters that would benefit from it the most

The shift takes away offense and makes defense easier and less entertaining. It’s not good for the game

For the record I’ve always said the shift ban should be:

2 infielders on each side of second base and they all have to have their feet on the dirt.

So you can still shift (shade your SS/2B just to the side of 2nd base) you just can’t overload a side or put your 3B out in shallow RF. Nobody wants to watch that excrement

the ineptitude of mlb owners and manfred, along with that absolutely pathetic statement by manfred after the non-agreement, on top of all of the other executive clusterfucks the sport deals with on a yearly basis, have literally removed any excitement i may have had for the sport or the upcoming season

Fair enough, I'll defer to you on this one. They did a similar thing in cricket, they created an infield ring requiring fielding teams to have five fielders inside it so that teams couldn't just load up the outfield to prevent batters scoring quickly. I see the logic but I still don't really like it much.

I don't like the shift ban in theory and think it should be the offense's job to react and evolve (like football with the i-formation -> 46 -> WCO -> Cover 2) but it probably helps my team so whatever.

Apparently there's a provision in the new CBA saying that unvaccinated players will not be allowed to play in Canada and won't be compensated for games missed as a result.
