Asserting that old people aren't worth keeping alive is... bad
I agree, so it's just as well he didn't do that. He talks about the decreasing utility of old people in economic terms, the fact that treatments are delivering additional quantity of life without commensurate additional quality, and that he has no desire personally to have his life artificially extended when he doesn't feel that it's providing value.
Lots of presidents and lots of politicians say, “Children are our most valuable resource.” But we as a country don’t behave like that. We don’t invest in children the way we invest in adults, especially older adults. One of the statistics I like to point out is if you look at the federal budget, $7 goes to people over 65 for every dollar for people under 18.
I don't think that that is an outrageous statement. He may very well have asserted that old people aren't worth keeping alive, but he doesn't do it in this article.
