Jets and head coach Rex Ryan have reached agreement on a multi-year extension, according to team and league sources.

Rex Ryan had 1 year left on deal. His agreed-to extension is for multi years. That ties Ryan to Jets for at least 3 more years, maybe more.

I'm betting this is a significant reason this was done. After losing Kotwica (whether he's good or not) the front office had to be thinking the risk of exodus under an unknown climate had to be too great.

Also, this flies right in the face of everyone who thought Rex couldn't work with Idzik or that Idzik was intent on bringing in "his guy" despite Idzik clearly stating he likes working with Rex.

Now Marty really has to get that offense clicking.

Well, they can fire him whenever they want. They'll still have to pay him but it's not like it counts against the cap or anything.

true but maybe his salary isn't that high unless he wins playoff games.  That way Woody wouldn't be shelling out much if they decide to bail on him.  All speculation obviously.

What will tell us a lot is the total number of years. If it's a three year deal, including 2014, then it's still a "show me" contract. If it's at least four years, even including next season, it's a real "we want Rex to lead the rebuild of this team" contract.

I'm expecting the former. 3-year deal covering 2014-2016.

Very Happy. This is the way to go. I think we will see Idzik's impression on Rex coming to the fore too. No more days of brash bullish nonsense- lets let the results do our talking.

Having said all of that I miss some of Rex's old bluster like the time he was goading that Dolphin with "I've thrown tougher guys out of the way to get to a fight."
