Joe Flacco is the buffer between Sam Darnold and Dowell Loggains
My dad always says he's undefeated at tailgating

Maybe it's not I who doesn't know what he's talking about

Just some devil's advocate spitballing.
Flacco uttering the "here to help Sam" company line is to be expected right out of the box and especially since he has a history with Joe Douglas.  At the same time he still wants to play (believes he's got something left in the tank) and with $3M in incentives,  exactly how will his "clipboard-holding / help Sam"  hold up over an entire season?  Further, he's an immobile big-arm QB whose skill set doesn't exactly align with Darnold's.  Lastly, while he's dinged up, he saw Peyton Manning come back from a wrenched neck, and, he's the same crank who made a point of saying his job was not to serve as Drew Lock's mentor.  just sayin'..
You make some points, but this situation is completely different than Denver.

In Denver, Flacco was brought in to be the guy in the short term, assuming Lock wasn't ready. And a guy with Flacco's history probably is confident he can hold off a 2nd-round pick.

Here, Flacco was brought in clearly to be a backup, and he's too injured to play right away anyway. I think Flacco views this as a one-year hiatus where he can rehab, rehabilitate some of his reputation, and get on the field if something bad happens to Darnold. If Flacco were healthy right now, it might have caused issues, but I think Flacco should have a better mindset now.

I was going to post a longer response but Smalls beet me to it.

I don't think we need to worry about Flacco making a fuss in the locker room. He'll more likely be there to help guide Sam on reading defenses and pressures rather than teach Sam to play like him. I don't think that many teams have the exact same archetype QB sitting behind their starter.

Also, I don't think that Sam needs help with making throws from broken plays, he's generally great when he's out in the flats and having to make funky throws from weird places (I know he sometimes makes bad decisions but honestly I think every QB probably has a worse completion and INT percentage once they're out there). If Flacco can teach him how to make better reads and better decisions pre-snap and particularly once he's off his first look that would be a huge help, Sam doesn't seem to have that lock on problem that many QBs (ahem Mark Sanchez) get, but he does sometimes make bad decisions once he's into his progressions. Of course, actually having more than two seconds to make the decision on occasion might help as well.

In a perfect world, James Morgan impresses and is ready to be the No. 2 over Flacco.

When was the last time the Jets lived in a perfect world?

When was the last time the Jets lived in a perfect workd?

It has to be either the day we drafted Sam Darnold, or the day we hired Douglas.

But that seems like our best bets
Need a new one for a new board...

In all of our lifetimes, this is probably the answer.

Too early for either of those 2 to be the answer.
