I think the US should follow the UK in prioritizing the 1st vaccination to as many people as possible instead of saving enough doses for the same people to get the 2nd one. The UK is stretching the gap between doses from 21 days to 12 weeks.   I realize there isn't a ton of data on efficacy after only 1 vaccination, but I believe it won't be far off what you get with 2 vaccinations and you can protect more people now. 

I think getting ~75% efficacy to twice as many people is better than ~95% to half as many.  I think the anamnestic response will still be quite strong at 12 weeks.

Fairly certain it wasn't close to 75%

But Dr. Chris Gill, an infectious disease specialist at Boston University, points out that a single injection of Pfizer's vaccine may be even more effective than this estimate suggests. Looking at data from a smaller window between the time the first injection should have started working and before the second injection kicked in, Gill says the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine may have an efficacy rate as high as 80 or 90% with just a single dose.
Moderna actually collected data from people who only received one dose of its vaccine, Gill says. Some 2,000 participants in Moderna’s phase three clinical trial received just a single injection of either a placebo or the vaccine. In that population, the efficacy of the single vaccine dose was roughly 80 to 90%.

Plus you'd still be getting the 2nd vaccination, just at 12 weeks instead of 3.

It could be as high as 60% or 70%, they estimated based on previous trials, but that remains far below the 95% efficacy for people who get both doses.

Pfizer said in a statement that decisions on dosing are up to health authorities, but that there's no data to show how the shot works if people don't get their second injection on time.

"The safety and efficacy of the vaccine has not been evaluated on different dosing schedules as the majority of trial participants received the second dose within the window specified in the study design," Pfizer and BioNTech said.
