I'm one of those who chimes in "The virus doesn't know what time it is."

I don't get what closing everything at 10 PM accomplishes. My wife says "Well, young people tend to go out later, so it'll deter them, and by 10 PM older people are already drunk and starting to make bad decisions."

I get that, but the virus is like "IDGAF what time it is, I'm just looking to be deep in your throat y'all."

I think your wife is wrong. I think it will encourage young people to either have house parties and not spend any money with businesses that are already desperate, or to go out and then invite other young people they meet in the pub back to their homes to carry on drinking. I think it's policy made by old people who think they know how young people behave.

Supposedly indoor gatherings of over 10 people are banned as well--likely to both prevent what you're mentioning, and to deter normal US Thanksgiving festivities.

And still, I don't see how it can be effective. The virus doesn't know what time it is.

The point is to affect human behavioral patterns. People are more likely to ignore social distancing requirements when they are drunk, that's more likely to happen later at night, aside from the normal happy hour alkies (guilty). If you remove the evironment you remove the virus' opportunity.
