As of this moment, 128,024 people in the US have died from COVID-19.

This is an actual statistic.

That number is going to skyrocket as things take off in Florida and Texas.

Covid death rates per 100,000 population:

New York 161

UK 66
Spain 61
Italy 57
France 44
USA 38

Arizona 21
Florida 15
Texas 8

As of today, here is the most Covid deaths by state in the last week (do note that the panic over Florida/Arizona/Texas has been going for over a week): https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/coronavirus-deaths-u-s-map-shows-number-fatalities-compared-confirmed-n1166966

New York was seeing >800 deaths per day at its peak. New York's death rate is higher or approximately equal than all three of those states right now. The hugely problematic Florida, Texas, and Arizona aren't even approaching triple digit death rates. Florida's rolling average is lower than it was 50 days ago. What kind of exponential curve are we talking here?

The number of cases' correlation with death rates has gone significantly down as the average age of the people catching it has gone down and as tests have become more available. Going to take a big guess that those things are correlated.

This website is some good browsing for visuals: https://covidusa.net/?state=New%20Jersey https://covidusa.net/?state=New%20York https://covidusa.net/?state=Arizona https://covidusa.net/?state=Texas https://covidusa.net/?state=Florida

It freaking sickens me that there are motherfuckers in this country that think even a SINGLE freaking death is an acceptable loss to this virus. We had China AND Italy as freaking warnings before this excrement started killing Americans.

Eat a big freaking dick with that percentages bullshit.

Yeah, I'm drunk. And still, freak that percentages bullshit.

Oh, and I just LOVE the whole "Well if people don't die, then whatevs" bullshit too.

No one has any idea what the lasting effect of the virus has on survivors. Numerous cases have resulted in permanent damage to the lungs, but who cares amirite? freak old people. And kids don't get it, except the ones who do. And young people will be fine, except the ones who have freaking strokes in their 30s, but freak them too.

I don’t give a freak, man.

80% of the ICU is full here.  I don’t care if it’s seniors or smokers or immunocompromised people.

A excrement ton of people are dying and you seem to be focused on young people not dying...but they can still spread it to people that it has a better shot at killing.

According to that NBC chart, over 1000 people have died since I posted the updated death toll just five hours ago.

There comes a point when I have to look at people and realize that there is no argument that would convince them to care more about other people. It hurts every time.

Why focus on what can be measured, what we can determine, what we can try to figure out? Data is just dumb bullshit. Nah, freak this counterproductive mindset.

Very convenient to not give a freak about the data that's staring right in your face lol. People dying is bad, wow what a brave stance to take. I'm sure you'll have people lining up to disagree with you on that one.

I'm curious why no one is bringing up Georgia now. They opened up first, they were experimenting with human sacrifice?

But Jumbo’s economy!

Very mature and nuanced take here. I see your point now. freak small business owners, they can go to hell for all I care.

Georgia is extremely rural aside from Atlanta.  It's also half the size of both Florida and Texas.

Someone give Jumbo a freaking bag of Tostito's for his defense of small business.

Over 130,000 dead in a few months but don't you dare shut down my mom and pop sandwich shop.

Very, very easy to say incredibly stupid excrement like this when you don't have any skin in the game.  It's not gonna affect you, so who cares right? Is there no possible middle ground besides shut down forever until a vaccine that may or may not come or work and re-open everything?

We have a good idea of how this spreads now. Avoiding indoor gatherings is smart, but we still have governors opting to shut down beaches and outdoor activities when that doesn't really make sense.

I'll take that bag of Tostitos now.

I mean poverty can kill people in a different way so economic concerns are legitimate. You just need to take a look at the people hit hardest by this and the correlation with socioeconomics and its pretty clear that the economy is tied to your health and life/quality of life in a major way

However in this case shitty decision making from millions of people has led to a devastating loss of life AND an absolutely crippling impact on the economy.

I know people want to pretend that you can just open things up and a handful of stragglers will die but everything will be alright otherwise. But all its going to do is drag this excrement out kill more people and slow bleed the economy.

I'm very much a go-go economy cheerleader but it's blatantly freaking obvious that what we've done and what we're doing is in no way the best thing for the economy.

The US isn't the only country in the world. Countries with varying levels of mask usage and lockdown have all fared (mostly) better than the US. Much like we don't know about the long-term effects of Covid, we don't know overly much about what public policy is most effective because the data gives mixed indicators. "What we've done" varies highly from state to state.
