Except the Yankees didn’t make money hand over fist this year. They took the biggest loss of any MLB team. You know that right?
Facts are they have a top of the league payroll and they’re up hard against the luxury tax which *spoiler alert* none of these rich derriere mlb teams want to pay because it’s a giant cut of their profits and these teams are businesses not vehicles for our whimsical fantasies where we sign every top FA every year.
Projected 2021 salary via spotrac:
1) New York Yankees - $175
This is before they make all of their moves to make the team competitive.
Stop. Complaining. About. Payroll.
What you should be complaining about is the inability of a team with a $200M payroll to beat a team with a $50M payroll. You really think the problem is that they’re not spending enough money?
I'm always going to complain about spending money. It's not mine. My only interest is winning, not profiting.
That said, I agree the problem isn't the physical spending of money--it's how the money has been spent. Stanton should not be a Yankee. Just like ARod never should have been. I really like both of them, but both had bloated contracts. And those are two worthy players, nevermind spending on someone like an Ellsbury.
But that's kind of my point. This team needs to spend on players that
will help, not
might. You can rely on DJ to get a hit at least 30% of the time. He's proven himself to be a hitter the Yankees desperately need with RISP. He's not a boom-or-bust hitter, so even with a multi-year deal, he's likely to live up to his payday. Bauer is the kind of pitcher this team desperately needs if they want to win titles. Cole was the first piece, but then you need a guy who is going to win you game 2 and put you in the driver's seat of a series. Add in Severino, and you've got a rotation that can compete long-term in October.
There are bad contracts on this team. I'd also put Hicks and Chapman in that category. Again, players I like, but their money could pay for bigger needs or more reliable players. If Cashman can trade away some money, by all means. But I don't care if Steinbrenner pays more out of pocket to acquire more talent on top of bad contracts.
