Sheldon Richardson, DE, New York Jets

He led my Race for Rookie of the Year all the way through the season, but when push came to shove he narrowly missed out in the tightest of tight votes.

There’s an awful lot to like about Richardson who finished second behind J.J. Watt with a +34.0 run defense grade. Ultimately he fell short in part because of the numbers he put up rushing the passer where his Pass Rushing Productivity score was only 17th out of 22 qualifying 3-4 ends.

Still, it was a tremendously impactful rookie year and if he can make the kind of leap in this regard that Muhammad Wilkerson made from Year 1 to Year 2, then you should be very scared about what that Jets defense might do.

Desmond Trufant got the top honor.

It's good for some things, terrible for others. I don't understand how they can assign coverage grades and claim they're legit when they have no way of knowing what the hell the coverage is on a given play

I agree that there are some irregularities between positions etc depending on the grader and his ability to diagnose what's happening on a given play. This was just one dude that works there opinion I believe. We saw Richardson all 16 games I would bet that isn't the case with the dude that made the list. Meh whatever, people actually think Kiko Alonso was the best defensive rookie even though he wasn't very good at the end of the season, hell he wasn't anything special from the game 8-9 on. Hurr Durr he had a lot of tackles.

Oh he said he led my list for the entire season I mistook that for it being his call.

To use PFF's metric, Alonso was +6.2 for the season. Through game #6 he was +5.0, from game #6 (ten weeks) on he was +1.0. He had 6 negative scores on the season the worst being -3.3 then -2.6 and lastly 1.8. Oh boy was he a world beater. 

Sheldon was +30.4 for the year, had 3 negative grades the worst of which was a negative .2. His 2 negative scores that came at the end of the season were because he had a double penalty one game and was injured.
