Jets coach Adam Gase said he's "hoping" S Marcus Maye (shoulder) will be ready for Week 1.

Of course "hoping" isn't the same as making a guarantee as it seems the Jets are still flying somewhat blind in regards to Mayo's injury status. Gase was "optimistic" Maye would be up in running by OTAs following last year's shoulder surgery, but clearly that never came to fruition. Maye's continued absence should open up practice reps for Doug Middleton, Rontez Miles and others at free safety.

Whoever came up with Marcus Maybe, I tip my cap.

Blake Cashman is clearly impressing coaches. Taking a ton of reps with the first team

Defensive end Bronson Kaufusi spent some decent time working with the first-team defense, piggybacking on a productive spring. When he came in, the Jets would run a 4-3 look, with outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins on the sideline. But Jenkins also saw his fair share of snaps, with the Jets taking a 3-4 shape once he trotted on the field. Outside linebacker Brandon Copeland typically stayed on the field in both the 3-4 and 4-3 alignments.

Gase said he expects slot cornerback Brian Poole to come off the active/non-football injury list soon – probably Friday. Gase said Poole wasn’t sidelined for conditioning reasons, but wasn’t all that convincing about it, adding that the Jets were “giving him a little extra conditioning.” He also didn’t mention any actual injury, so conditioning appears to be the culprit. Surprisingly, the Jets had Arthur Maulet filling in for Poole, rather than Parry Nickerson, who was the backup slot corner last year. So a potential depth-chart shakeup there.

 

• Webb’s interception was only the start of his troubles. He also fumbled twice. Obviously not a great start for him, as he battles it out for a backup job. Trevor Siemian is currently getting second-team reps, with Webb and Luke Falk splitting the third-team snaps.

Where is nickerson

Parry Nickerson has received an undue amount of expectation from Jets fans for a sixth round pick, IMO. I don't recall ever having seen anything from him that made me think he had the makings of anything other than a role player.
