I agree that any penalty that is an automatic first down is totally ridiculous. There is no such penalty for the offense that results in an automatic fourth down.
To be fair though it would encourage teams to commit penalties on defense in certain situations.
3rd and 22? Be extra freaking aggressive on opposing wide outs and hope you don't get called for holding. If you do, then NBD it's 3rd and 17,if you don't well then it's 4th down.
I'd rather see the league let DBs play defense rather than try to get rid of the automatic first down things.
