Hot take – I think the Mets will be good (better than expectations) this year. Should be in the hunt for a wildcard.

Not Hot take – Completely dependent on starting rotation health.

On cue, the Mets signed Jason Vargas. Sounds like Zach Wheeler wasn’t pleased in his press conference today. Not sure what the pecking order is right now

the mets aren't going to do excrement this year

so long as this team has the wilpons as owners, they'll never do anything.

if this team really wanted to make the WS and become champions, they'd be going all out in the offseason and getting the best guys available, irrespective of price tag, because this team has some glaring freaking holes, and still does.

instead, what we've been left with are these patchy, short-term, value-type deals that are just.....okay, but obviously not enough

we aren't going to do anything

As always, the fate of this team is almost completely dependent on health.

Mets have Wilmer Flores taking reps in the OF. Can’t say I understand that one. Maybe he’ll be better than he is in the IF?

They were in the World Series a couple years ago.

yeah, we were, and we trashed the cubs 4-0 on the way there....but look at the sorts of moves the cubs have made since then, and their team trajectory, and look at ours. there is a huge difference in approach there, and it all comes down to our horrible ownership. 2015 was a dream. 2016 was fluked because lugo and gsellman threw sub-3 era's for 2 months, which is something they have shown was nothing but an aberration. 2017 is what we were.

it's not that the fate of this team comes down to health, it's that we naively bank on players going into seasons who've proven to be huge health/injury risks, and it's going to bite us in the derriere. before we signed an SP we were going to go into this season with harvey, matz, and wheeler as 3/5 of our rotation. that's completely laughable from a reliability standpoint. if we wanted to compete with the top guns in the NL/MLB, we should have signed at least 2 really good SPs this winter. we should have been all over darvish. we should have tried going after one of lynn/cobb; we didn't even try. we should have tried getting stanton in a trade. we ended up with jason vargas. it should be a crime that a NY market team that makes as much money as the mets acts like they're the royals when it comes to payroll, and the wilpons deserve to rot in hell for behaving the way they do.

Michael Conforto (shoulder) has begun hitting off a tee.

Positive news. Target date for return is May 1.

You misunderstood, he's starting practice early for the vacation he already has booked for Florida in October.

Here are Noah Syndergaard's velocities in a perfect first inning:

100 mph
100 mph
100 mph
100 mph
90 mph
100 mph
97 mph
91 mph
101 mph
101 mph
92 mph

I know for certain that the 92 was a changeup, so I would assume the 90 and 91 were too.

i didn't watch the game, but his slider also hits low-mid 90s. the pitch he struck out altuve with was a changeup for sure

So that Indians-Mets deal for Kipnis that was nixed by ownership --the reliever who was going to Cleveland?
Paul Sewald, per a source
So the framework of deal that was at the finish line:
Paul Sewald for Jason Kipnis.
It was set to go, but Mets then backed out.
