Whisky / whiskey
« on: November 14, 2017, 05:43:27 AM »
Sure it's not because of whiskey for breakfast?
I assume you mean "whisky" of which single malt from Scotland is unrivalled as the best on the planet

Was always curious about the spelling. Seems like either one works.
So it turns out, Italian Seafood was right an everyone can go freak themselves.

Scotch is whisky; Irish, bourbon and rye are all whiskey. I don't know why the difference.

The spelling of whisky, or whiskey, differs geographically. As a rule, American and Irish prefer ‘whiskey’ and the Scots, Canadians and the rest of the world’s single malt makers prefer ‘whisky’. This originated during the 19th century. For in around 1870, Scotch whisky was of very low quality, much of it being distilled poorly in Coffey stills. For exportation to America, the Irish distillers wanted to differentiate their product from the poorer Scotch whisky, thus they added the ‘e’ to mark the crucial distinction. Today, Scotch whisky has become one of the world’s greatest spirits, but the spelling still differs. On mass, Americans still spell their spirit with an ‘e’, though legally it is spelt ‘whisky’. A few distillers, Maker’s Mark and George Dickel for example, prefer the Scottish spelling, this is to be attributed to their Scottish ancestry.

I've always just spelled it JD but I'm a silly American.

Ew. I love bourbon, but you do know that most of what Jack Daniels produces is swill, right? It's the PBR of whiskey.

Do yourself a favour and go get a bottle of Knob Creek. It's a small batch bourbon, but it's made by Jim Beam and it won't break the bank. Try it next to JD and I promise you'll never look back.

I agree there are some Bourbon's that are fantastic and inexpensive. I have Buffalo Trace in my freezer and if you had that and then had JD, the JD is pure trash.

There's a craft beer thread, lets have a bourbon/Whiskey thread. Also I think there's a huge difference between Tullamore Dew and Jamison, I think TD is a million times better than JD.

I agree. Done.

I've tried really hard to get on with scotch, but I can't. I'm almost exclusively a bourbon drinker, although I do have a bottle of Crown Royal Northern Harvest which is a magnificent rye.

My dog Woodford is named after Woodford Reserve, which is my go to house whiskey for making cocktails.

Awesome thank you!

That's pretty cool, I haven't had Woodford.

I'm not a whiskey drinker. I've never liked the burn. But I had some scotch about a year ago with my boss' boss, and it was pretty good. I can't recall the name. I guess that's the case, right? Is it all about the quality of it? Admittedly, my whiskey experience otherwise has been Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey, Chivas Regal, Jamison, and whatever it was I had above.

Don't try and man your way through it. A lot of whiskey is improved immeasurably by adding a drop or two of water; it opens up the flavours and reduces the burn of the alcohol. In fact, a lot of the more expensive whiskies with ABVs of 50% and more are all but undrinkable without adding water.

Mind you, bad whiskey won't taste better if you dilute it. You'll just increase the amount of nasty tasting excrement in your glass.

What's your opinion on ice? I had Jamison at a wedding last year on the rocks and it wasn't "great" but it was more drinkable than anything apart from the unnamed I tried. It's the only time I've ever had Jamison, so I wouldn't know one way or the other if it was "better."

Ice is frozen water. It will melt and have the same effect as just adding water, but by reducing the temperature as well it dampens the flavours down. I'm not especially a fan, but it's not for me to tell people how they should or shouldn't enjoy their drinks.

Next time you're tempted to try a whiskey though, add a little bit of water instead of ice. Purists will tell you that it should be distilled water so that the minerals don't interfere with the whiskey flavours, but unless you're into poncey tasting it really doesn't make a difference. Just add the water a couple of drops at a time, taste, repeat if you still want to take the impact down util you've got the balance where you want it. Then you can enjoy the whiskey flavours without having it tear the back of your throat off.

Why isn't this common advice? It seems like something people would scoff at ("What are you doing watering down good whiskey!?") but makes complete sense.

Then again, it seems no one understands that there is a very good reason that wine glasses have stems.
