Evaluation Period Begins
« on: December 19, 2013, 03:09:31 PM »
Quote
SethWalderNYDN: Dennis Thurman said they'll use whole defensive roster now. Give snaps to some guys they haven't seen much of to evaluate. #nyj

Quote
SethWalderNYDN: DT named Josh Bush, Jaiquawn Jarrett specifically as guys they want to get more reps over next two games. #nyj

The last two games will basically be an open tryout for next year.

I'd like to see Zach Sudfeld get reps over Kellen Winslow.  I wonder if Ben Ijalana, Oday Aboushi, and Will Campbell will get any reps.

That's their nice way of saying Reed doesn't have anything left

And Winslow barely plays. Didn't he get 17 snaps and one pass vs the Panthers?

Also westy said Sudfield was the one to Eff up the punt. But I agree on using him in the passing game more

He also isn't part of the future of this franchise, so there's no point in playing him over Antonio Allen/Josh Bush/Jaiquawn Jarrett.

Most, if not all, of the veterans on one year deals should lose playing time to younger players.  Willie Colon, Calvin Pace, and Kellen Winslow come to mind.

He's probably getting 20 to 25 snaps a game.  Limited, but I'd rather see Sudfeld/Pantale out there instead.

Yeah but you could have said that about all the positions. When he points out the safeties specifically, that makes me think it's more about Reed.

If he just left it at were gonna evaluate and get younger I'd think that's a trend.

Of course this could also mean Idzik has interest in retaining Rex and or DT possibly even discussed it with them. How often do you see coaches on the hot seat going into evaluate mode rather than trying to save their jobs

This is exactly what I was advocating for a few days ago. There is nothing left to play for, save a minor opportunity to play spoiler against Miami, so you play everyone that has a reasonable shot to return next year and see what you have.

I wonder if the coaching staff has been instructed to play the young guys. Further, I wonder if they've been told (or at least given clear indication) whether they will be returning next year.

I think if they're going to be retained they'll all know before the season is done, if they don't already. I also think Idzik will sit on that information, either way, until at least after the Super Bowl.

Selective reading is really convenient for you, isn't it?

Someone doesn't say specifically unless he has a reason. We have old guys getting phased out like pace, Winslow, Holmes, possibly Cromartie as well.

In reference to dcm's point (only because I mentioned the same thing) Mornhinweg made an interesting comment this afternoon as well. He basically said he's still convinced Geno can be a great one some day. Maybe he's committed to Smith as his future starter here.

Honestly, if Marty truly believes that he can mold Smith into a star, I would sit through another year of him. Draft the pieces around him that are needed, like a receiver in round 1, and see if next year there is true progress.

Then, if it doesn't work out, we go all out to get the future franchise in the 2015 draft.

It certainly requires more patience, but that is the price of this not having been a true rebuilding year.

Marty Mornhinweg drafted Joey Harrington.  But I do wonder how much of a say he had in drafting Nick Foles.

*turns out Mornhinweg is responsible for Philly drafting Foles

He also had a lot of say in the Kevin Kolb selection
