Bender (Bloomberg) -- The fatal shooting by a white gunman of ninepeople in a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, will be investigated as a possible hate crime by federalauthorities. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the FBI andthe U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolinasaid Thursday they are probing the shooting at Emanuel AMEChurch. Federal agencies are cooperating with the state’sinvestigation, according to a Justice Department statement. The suspect was attending a meeting in the church foralmost an hour before he killed nine people and injured at leastone other in an incident that both the mayor and police chiefsaid was a hate crime. Police were still searching Thursdaymorning for the suspect, who they described as a male between 21and 24 years old. Police Chief Greg Mullen said three men and six women werekilled Wednesday night, and there were three survivors insidethe church. He declined to identify victims or survivors or thetype of gun used while speaking to reporters at a newsconference. “No one in this community will ever forget this night,”Mullen said. The church’s pastor, Clementa Pinckney, a South Carolinastate senator, was among those killed, Reverend Al Sharpton saidin a post on his Twitter feed. Mayor Joseph Riley Jr. described the shootings as “anunfathomable and unspeakable act” committed by someone with a“deranged mind.” “We’re committed to finding this horrible scoundrel,”Riley said. ‘Extremely Dangerous’ Mullen said police received a call about the shooting at9:05 p.m., and officers found eight people dead when theyarrived. One person who was taken to the Medical University ofSouth Carolina later died, he said. Mullen described the shooter as having sandy-blond hair andbeing “extremely dangerous.” A post on the police department’sTwitter feed described the suspect as having a slender build andwearing a gray sweatshirt and Timberland boots. The suspect was in the church attending a meeting foralmost an hour before the shooting, Mullen said. Police don’tknow if anyone was targeted “other than the church itself,” hesaid. “This is a tragedy that no community should have toexperience,” he said. “It is unfathomable that somebody intoday’s society would walk into a church when people are havinga prayer meeting and take their lives. And I can assure you thatwe’re going to do everything in our power to find thisindividual, lock him up, to make sure that he does not hurtanyone else.” Governor Haley South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, askedfor prayers for the families affected by the shooting.Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush canceled a campaignevent in the city scheduled for Thursday morning. “While we do not yet know all of the details, we do knowthat we’ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter oneof our places of worship and take the life of another,” Haleysaid in a statement.
