ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports the Jets "have interest" in acquiring Josh McCown.

The Jets have been at a stalemate with free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick and have begun discussing other options. In Cleveland, McCown seems likely to be the odd man out with coach Hue Jackson wanting to go with a veteran -- likely Robert Griffin III -- and an early-round rookie. The Jets would prefer McCown be released rather than having to trade for him, but Cimini ranks McCown as the most likely quarterback to land with the Jets should they not re-sign Fitzpatrick.

Another tactic to force Fitzpatrick's hand

Rotoworld back at it again (with the white Vans)

Rich Cimini says in his article that the Jets had interest in McCown before the team acquired Ryan Fitzpatrick last year.  He does not say that the team is interested in trading for him.

Best possible scenario would be re-signing Fitzpatrick and bringing in Josh McCown to back up him.  Get Geno Smith off of this team. 

Surround Bryce Petty with veterans.

Yes please. If Fitz struggles or reverts to his old ways of getting hurt, McCown can theoretically go two more games without getting helicoptered into another concussion.

I still like the idea of Fitz and RG3 since the long term reward with Griffin is substantially higher than McCown, but with McCown you get exactly what you need, a solid backup who can start if needed.

I'd rather go with a younger player to back up Fitz if we re-sign him. If we don't re-sign Fitz, McCown isn't the worst stopgap...
