Jets sign QB Matt Flynn

Rapoport: Free agent QB Matt Flynn is working out for the #Jets today, source said. Had spent the early part of camp with the #Patriots.

Flynn has a total of 17 TDs and 11 interceptions in his career.

By way of comparison, his competition for the backup job have the following:

Grossman: 56/60
Thigpen: 21/18

Ryan Fitzpatrick is 123/101, and Geno Smith is 25/34.

Fitzpatrick / Flynn or Thigpen / Petty is clearly the right roster for the season. Thigpen is a better rusher than any of the others, including Smith (8 fumbles in 2 years), but frankly I'd rather leave any of these QBs in the pocket as much as possible.

He's still probably got some trade value, there appear to be enough people around who think he might be able to become a serviceable backup. As I am not one of them, I would see what's on offer elsewhere and then take it. He has no value to me on my roster.

Which is why I said before the draft this is the cheapest it will be to Ditka for a QB for a while.

Mangold/Brick are getting a little long in the tooth.  Our OL will need an upgrade.


Landing a franchise QB should be THE top priority though.

Our primary CBs and several of our linebackers are also the wrong side of 30. We need a QB but we shouldn't be selling the farm for one, there are too many other needs to be addressed. The roster is good now but it isn't built for the long term.
