A 3rd string qb isn't going to be Joe Montana.  These guys are fine.  Hopefully they don't see the field and get released later in the year.

I feel like we will wait until the surgery is done (which coincides with after the Lions game) figure out how long he's gone, and then if it's likely to be 2-3 regular season games, just roll with Petty as the #2 and if it's going to be longer we will have to bring in another arm and probably put Geno on the IR designated to return slot this year.

Can't do that, man. If Fitzmagic gets injured in the last preseason game you're looking at Petty starting with Heaps on the bench. We need another vet on the roster.
