1/2 Re: Brandon Marshall raise: He had other suitors while on trading block. In competitive situation, Jets agreed to sweeten deal. #nyj

2/2: Couldn't re-work contract until 5/22 -- 1-year anniv of Marshall's ext w/ Bears. Have to wait 12 mos. before giving a raise, per rule.

I don't get it.

We gave him 1.3 million just because ?

There surely had to be some benefit to the team...

No poopchute.  We gave him $1.3M more to get him to want to come to New York.

On the plus side it lowers the final year of his contract by 1 million

Making it more likely he plays the next 3 seasons here.

And we save another 700,000 on him in 2017 if we win a superbowl

This really doesn't change much with him except he gets a little pay raise for this year.  They can still cut him after this year if it doesn't work out.  He'll get a little more next year if he plays well enough to keep.  Not a huge deal.  If he sees the third year, I'll be surprised but it'll mean he was awesome.

Wasn't this known already when we got him? Should've been part of the initial terms of the deal.
"Wrong!"

We inherited his contract but did he just take the Jets' word for it when they traded? Figured he signed an addendum or something.

Is him seeing the 3rd year really a stretch?

Odds are were gonna have a new QB next year. Do you really get rid of your best offensive weapon when getting a new QB?

And his 3rd year price is actually quote reasonable now. So barring him drastically taking a step back I would actually be surprised if he doesn't play all 3 years (unless he gets arrested or beats a woman or has some other  crazy mental break down)

He's 31.  Injuries happen.  Play deteriorates.  He has Geno likely dragging his performance down.  I think it's possible he sees year 3, but I'd bet against it.

Isn't his contract guaranteed for injury only?

Next year, yes.  That's why they can cut him scott free.
