So did this always happen at American sporting fixtures, or is it a relatively new phenomenon?

It always happened, as far as I remember, and I don't know anyone who thinks its weird.

I'm sick and tired of the military circle jerk. I respect the people in the military but I know a ton of dipshits who joined because it would allow them to escape a jail sentence or because they were at a dead end in life. They show up in town and people praise them for doing 6 weeks of boot camp

Military aka The Night's Watch
My dad always says he's undefeated at tailgating

Maybe it's not I who doesn't know what he's talking about

Knew a guy who did just that. A story about him getting injured overseas starting floating around. He got free drinks and people talked about him like he was a hero.

He got injured on base being a dumbass, but lied to everyone. Girl he was banging told the truth.

I believe they do it whenever American is at war.

Jet Offensive, where treasured symbols of America get excrement on because a guy knew a guy who shouldn't have been applauded when he walked into the local Chills.

We have an issue with the propaganda, not the military

Honoring the troops isn't propaganda.

Honoring the troops isn't propaganda.

It's not explicit propaganda but it certainly has the underlying theme of it.

We can honor them but it has become excessive. Now we're paying the NFL to honor the troops as well?

People are just afraid of nationalism.

Meh. It's a form of advertising for the military I guess.

I get the vibe that the country has done it to prevent questioning of the enormous military budget

It's only 15pct of the budget. Mandatory spending, social security and health care, represent more than half and growing every year. That's a much bigger issue.

Besides, the military and defense industry combined employ millions of Americans. If nothing else most of that money is being put back in terms of tax revenue.
