Wikipedia isn't very reliable when it comes to war related things.

You'd be surprised at how many declassified military documents have been released in the past 20 years (at least ones that weren't outright destroyed) due to laws.  There's been a multitude of books written on WW2, Korea and Vietnam related to these documents recently.

They're still waiting declassification on some JFK files

The absolutely mind-blowing thing is that even after the second bomb dropped, the Japanese military wanted to fight on. It was only until after the Soviets basically rolled over Manchuria that they decided to surrender. The military guys in power knew that they were done, so selfishly wanted to keep the war on so they can die in battle or whatever.

I don't know how factual that specific part is but There was always a divide between the military and the rest of the people in power.

A lot of excrement that happened in China was because Tokyo had no control over their generals.

In fact Tokyo didn't even want to attack indochina but the military basically did anyways. Only then is when the western powers gave a excrement because of their colonial interests.

Nationalism still exists, just not as systematic.

I think many Americans are indoctrinated/ blind to our brutal military history. Vietnam being one of the biggest examples. What we did to that country is beyond horrific and it was systematically done by incompetent military leadership. The government and military did a lot to cover it up.

If anything the horrors of the Vietnam War were more publicized than any war before it.

Some were. Obviously it had a huge impact on the anti war movement but it was only scratching the surface.

People were outraged over My Lai but there were hundreds of events similar to My Lai. That was just the first one that made it's way to the public eye.

Tough crowd here

Stopping Hitler and the Nazi's not good enough for ya

These guys were on the side that were committing genocide, and trying to exterminate groups of people from existence.

Bad things happened, but it was to stop some of the worst people in all of time

You realize Hitler was defeated and dead 3 months before Hiroshima, right?

The argument can be made that fewer lives were taken by the bombs than a land war would have taken.  You can also argue that preventing a Soviet presence in Japan was instrumental to Japan's rise later in the century.  Either way, no one can call it an unequivocally bad choice.

It was a necessary evil for sure. I just don't like the whole "Well, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor" argument. A surprise attack on a military base isn't exactly equivalent to basically disintegrating entire cities and its inhabitants.

WW2 was ostensibly a fight for freedom.

WW2 was ostensibly a fight for freedom.

Not America's freedom.
