I saw Tom Petty play in a rainstorm at Austin City Limits in 2006.  I wouldn't call myself a fan, but that was an awesome show.  The Heartbreakers were great live.

Tom Petty made some good tunes.  No gimmicks or looks.  Just a guy who wrote some good songs.  I wasn't in his fan club or anything, but I can respect his career.

Just heard about Tom Petty. Damn. I forgot how many hit records the Heartbreakers had until I saw the Defiant Ones on HBO. He seemed like a cool guy too.

I heard he was dead, but news these days...

Reluctantly camped outside for tickets in 1992.  My friend was a huge fan.  I always liked but didn't love his music.  Awesome show.

I have another friend that saw him like last week at the Hollywood Bowl.  Says they were incredible.

Supposedly the brain dead thing was also true though. Meaning death would likely be a mercy at this point.
