Yes (he spot filled at 2nd and 3rd esp. later on).  A Bluejay for the most part he came to the Yanks in '95, got hurt, Yanks called up Derek Jeter to the majors for the first time.   Fernandez was going to slide over to 2nd base in '96 but he hurt his elbow in spring training and missed the entire season.  Smooth as silk glove, great 'flick' throwing motion (a la Manny Trillo).
