Again I dont understand his leverage.  Can you explain.

Leverage comes when you have options.  Go back to school, you already are rich, you can play another sport.  I dont see him having any options besides threatening to sit which isnt leverage, but rather playing chicken

He doesn’t have to sign with Cincinnati if they draft him

It won’t turn into a staring contest...Cincy will move on. Either draft then trade his rights like the Chargers did with Eli, trade out, or draft another prospect.

I dont get what his leverage is.  Is he going to go back to school for his 11th year or play in the xfl?

It doesn't seem too different from Eli Manning making it known that he did not want to play for the Chargers.

I thought the NFL franchises retain player rights, e.g. Drew Henson and the Cowboys.

I believe this was it when coming up about Joey Bosa maybe never signing his deal with San Diego.

And you had better believe Burrow holds cards in this scenario. If he chooses NOT to play for the Bengals, they pick him and he doesn't sign, they become the franchise that wasted the #1 overall pick on a guy who never plays a down and never got anything for him. You and I don't think anything of it, and frankly if it was the Jets in this scenario, I think we both agree that we would rather do that and be that team, than the team that traded him for pennies on the dollar, or just took someone else anyways. But I doubt an NFL owner will see it that way. All they will see is the embarrassment if Burrow sticks to his guns. It's no different than the John Elway deal way back in the day.

Eli is the only comparison point, and a dumb one on multiple levels.

Firstly, Joe Burrow and his dad have spent most of their football lives in Ohio. The Mannings spent their entire lives in the Deep South, they didn't and don't give a freak what anyone in SoCal thought or thinks about them.

Secondly, the consolation prize for trading Eli within minutes was Philip Rivers. Mike Brown is an idiot but even he doesn't think that Justin Herbert is a consolation prize. No one is paying the compensation he would demand.

Thirdly, why does anyone think that Brown gives a freak what Joe Burrow thinks? He's 84 years old and everyone already hates him. He isn't going to get his derriere handed to him by a one year wonder, he'll dig his heels in. He already got punked by Carson Palmer, that's not happening again.

The only way Joe Burrow doesn't go #1 to Cincinnati is if they somehow fluke their way into a top FA quarterback and trade out of it, and that won't happen. This article is preseason column filling bullshit and if you give it any credence you're drunk, stupid or both.

Drew Henson isn’t setting a franchise back if he holds out....burrow will, that’s why if he doesn’t want to play for Cincy, they’ll move in a different direction.
