That's why it says any "major" sport.

"Enter two professional basketball, baseball, hockey, or football players."

It does explain further down that because no NHL player has ever played in the NBA, NFL or MLB, hockey only works for connecting to other hockey players.

So then it works just fine.  Hockey is completely disconnected.

You know, yeah, it looks like you're right. I did specifically pick 1985-2002 Ewing though, so it shouldn't be.
