You've...never seen Battle Royale?  That makes me inexpressibly sad.

Not as bad as someone not seeing Pulp Fiction.

I seen that Catching Fire.  Better than the first one.

I was a bit so-so on the first one. I'll probably get round to watching the second, but not with any great amount of anticipation.

Yours is worse, by a country mile.

This is true.  Battle Royale made me hate the Hunger Games when I first heard about it.  Saw BR at a screening more than a decade ago, then spent years with the bootleg before it finally got an American release.  My wife read the Hunger Games books and basically said "Yeah, they owe a lot to BR, but they're surprisingly entertaining."  So I read them.  Wanted to hate them, but every book was an easy, fun read.  I thought the first movie was pretty good, strong in parts, weak in others.  This one was a big step up, but again I'm not sure what the response will be from people who don't read it.

I don't really get why the BR fans hate Hunger Games. Aside from young people having to kill each other, they're not at all similar.

I thought Hunger Games was absolutely retarded.

It's about the 1% versus the rest of humanity, so this doesn't shock me.

Because of the idea of it and Collins' refusal to admit any sort of inspiration.

It's not quite as simple as that.  They're about kids who are ripped away and sent to a prepared arena to fight to the death in order to maintain order and prevent rebellion.  There are similarities between the two books in particular, at least until HG exhibits broader breadth.

Like I said, I hated it before giving it a chance.  Looked like an Americanized BR ripoff, which never is a faithful thing due to differences in narrative style and commentary between vastly different cultures.

Well, when you put it that way...

I've seen both and think both are very good, but a little overrated.

BTW I have not seen BR, and readily admit it. That said there is no way that's worse then not seeing Pulp Fiction.
