Of course it's the Patriots. Pulled the same dick move they did with Ballard.

I don't understand why players have to go through waivers to go onto IR, but it seems like something that needs to be fixed if there's an unwritten rule that's currently observed by 31 teams.

Guy was a 6th round pick

Teams couldn't value him too much

Let's not overreact

Hell probably end up on like 6 different teams

5'11" and white. And IJR is especially pissed because Carolina only just drafted him out of Stanford.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind a playing having to clear waivers before going on IR?
"Wrong!"

It's not all players.

Otherwise good players would never end up on IR since other teams would steal them

My guess is its just certain young rookies, so teams can't use IR like an alternative to the practice squad.

It's not about the player, it's about the time of year. It's only until the final roster is set, after that you can move a player directly to IR; the reasoning is that they want to prevent teams from using IR to stash players while they have oversized rosters. The problem is that in order to be sure of keeping Gaffney, Carolina would have had to carry him all the way through to the final 53, thus cutting their healthy 53rd choice, setting the roster, moving Gaffney to IR and then hoping that their 53rd choice was still available.

Given Gaffney has a season ending injury it's clear that Carolina aren't trying to stash the player, so this is just New England being the classless cunts they always have been.

Yup it's the same bullshit they pulled with Jake Ballard right before the Super Bowl a couple years ago.

There is an unwritten rule to not claim a player when the team is clearly going to IR a guy, as in this case with Gaffney.

If it's ok by the book, he can do it. It is what it is.

Yes.  Right now that's overriding my knowledge that he's not a great fit for the Pats and that this isn't his first ride on the injury train.
