Title: Rec Sports
Post by: IATA on May 05, 2014, 01:14:07 PM
Who all plays? I'm in 2 softball leagues, one of which is a nonsense league with my ladies co-workers and the other is a competitive league/tourny travel team.

I was 3-4 last night with a homer and 2 singles in the nonsense league. Everybody else is bad and this will be a test of patience.

Looking forward to the opening league game friday. It's my first year in this league, the team is a returning team that asked me to join though, so hopefully it's good.

I know SFD is doing one, what about anyone else?

I used to play flag football year-round when I was down in Charleston.  It was a great league with over 35 teams split into divisions.  Now that I'm here and most of my evenings in the fall are spent coaching, I just don't have the time anymore to do that.  The closest league is in Greenville, and that's about an hour long drive.  I may play next spring, because I miss it.

I do still play basketball in the winter in a men's league.  I've been asked to play softball a few times, but I'm not really interested.

Right now, I'm playing in an adult kickball league and it's freaking awesome.  Teams are allowed to bring beer out to the games and it's a good time.  It gets way more competitive than kickball should, but it's a great way to spend time and meet people from the area.

I play in a rec Quidditch league.  We may have a problem this year, though, as our Seeker is currently serving a brief sentence in Azkaban for freaking a higgledewump.

Oh well I am plying in an over 40 Ice Hockey league. I have never been this out of shape in my life, it sucks. There's only one thing to do and that's get in better shape. It's a total beer league, they give us a $50 bar tab for each team. The bar is attached to the rink.

I still have my hands, not my feet, for some reason my shot has a way of hitting every crossbar and post known to man. ugh.

didn't see this post till after i posted.

but yeah, we used to be able to have kegs on the field before they started tightening up. Now we can only do jungle juice in big coolers.
I been playing since 08 on and off.....
I've banged quite a few chicks through kickball. It helps that after games we all go to a designated bar and usually take it over with Flipcup and beerpong tables. most of the girls are DTF

There's some super competitive leagues and some more focused on just fun. Bunting to 3rd is the single most effective strategy there is and most teams use it. People who don't play laugh, but it's pretty hard to hit a kickball that's thrown at full speed bouncing and  that has spin on it.

Most of you probably know but I'm in an over-30 men's soccer league. We're represented by towns here in Queens and Long Island.

I went from being in what I'd consider a mediocre division into a much more skilled division where the game is moving at a pretty fast rate. A lot of Brits, Spanish and Jamaicans in this division. Semi-pros and we had a guy from the MLS on our team for a season.

I played defensive middie for my older team, I'm now playing mostly sweeper for my newer team. We're 2-1-1 so far. The tensions definitely run a bit higher on the field, but the home team has to provide beverages after the game. There are actually fines if there aren't.

I played rec soccer 2 years ago and just couldn't keep up because I was sloppy fatz. I might try again with one of the winter indoor rec teams this year.

I was kicked out of/banned from the local dodgeball league for being too "abrasive" 3 years ago. Apparently they frown upon trash talk, mockery, and "abusive throwing"(which is essentially, aiming for boobs). They were jerks anyways.

I play on a Men's league softball team, we went undefeated and won our fall league so they moved us up to 'A' League for the spring.  We're the youngest team by far, most of our guys are mid-to-late 20's and the teams were playing against are mostly guys in their 30's and 40's.  Every one of the teams that we play has 2-3 guys that can just mash home runs, and our team is more singles hitters and guys with gap power. We usually have the speed and defense advantages on most teams though.  Our record is 1-1, game tonight at 6:15, tune in on Fox Sports CT or on your AM dial at 770.

I also play Mens League hockey, there's 4 home rinks in CT that are a part of this league and the winner of each postseason at their respective rink goes onto an additional playoff tournament against the other 3 rinks. pretty cool stuff.

I've been out of softball for about 3 years, not really interested in getting back in unless I get another team together. We had a solid team full of former players/coaches and we'd just smash on other teams while pounding back pitchers of beer. Now, we're all parents and mostly haven't swung a bat since.

I'm interested in joining an adult wood bat league, two games/wk on Sundays in the summer. Really want to get back to playing baseball.

I was going to join a flag football league this spring, but the guy who asked me put together the biggest team of slapdicks in the history of all slapdicks, It really wouldn't have been worth it to play with a bunch of guys who can hardly throw/catch.

I played in a co-ed soccer league, but stopped playing a few years back.  Every player was drafted/assigned based upon ability and you could only request to play with one other person (keep the husband and wives together).  We kept score, but there were no standings, playoffs etc..  At least 3 women (which could include guys over 50) had to be on the field at all times.  No slide tackles.  Red card for hat trick etc..

Namby pamby as Hell, but I liked it.  I'm done with ultra competitive sports (played in college) and just want to have a good time, hit the ball around, and get some exercise.  In spite of all this, I got really tired of mid-life crisis agro-dicks running around like idiots, not passing to the women, screaming at the ref, clipping my ankles, or purposely matching up with women to gain an advantage.  WTF dude - go play with the mexicans in the park if you want to get in fistfights and be a dick.  The final straw was this idiot who slid  into a keeper late and broke his leg a few years back.  The keeper wasn't a player - he was just there to have a good time and this guy just wrecked him.

It's not. Because the girls who usually play of, played in high school or college.  And each team has equal number of girls and that are on the field at the same time. They're better than some of the guys.

most of these leagues are generally on a small, indoor type field.  fast and fun

The West Indies pace bowlers of the 80s, Joel Garner (6'8"), Curtly Ambrose (6'7") and Courtney Walsh (6'6") say freak you. They could all deliver the ball (almost identical in size and construction to a baseball) at 100mph, and they do so from about the same distance away as the mound is from home plate, but unlike baseball they're also allowed to aim it for your body and head. And back then batsmen didn't wear helmets either.

Chris Gayle is magnificent. I got married in St Lucia back in 2004 and just by sheer coincidence (not) England were playing an ODI against the Windies the following day just up the road, so a bunch of us went to watch it.

England put up a decent score in their innings, then for the first forty overs the Windies toiled and struggled and it looked like England would cruise to an easy victory. Then Chris Gayle woke up and started walking down the wicket to everything, hitting intended yorkers on the full and absolutely punishing everything outside off stump. The whole place started going insane and by the time the Windies won with two or three balls to spare I really didn't care about losing, the atmosphere was incredible and Gayle was a force of nature.

Yep. he single-handedly carries his T20 team in the IPL (Bangalore), and it's amazing at times to watch. Literally a 1 man show.

Kieron Pollard has shown flashes of the same, he's just not as consistent. I bet on Mumbai last year in a T20 game and i looked dead in the water with about 6 or 7 overs to go. Then Pollard went on some insane tear where he had like 66 runs on 25 balls. It was fantastic.

T20 is like video game cricket, but it's kind of what got me into cricket. Test can be so conservative and wicket preservation based. Like I said in the other thread, I can handle and enjoy ODI particularly because of the great international collection of players but Test is just too much.

It's the top level offered "tier 1" or "A league" but that doesn't really say much.  Open to 18+, there's a good mix of older guys and then most of the rest are ex college players, usually club. That's cool. A lot of Russians have winter homes down here, we had Vladimir Malakhov and Valerei Zelepukin on my A league team for a spell. Zelepukin is a super cool guy, Malakhov was very quiet didn't say anything. VM was freaking gigantic one stride and he was half way up the ice it seemed. Fedorov and Mogilny play at a different rink and were supposed to play on my team but they never made any games.

Anyway, I hurt my back and haven't played in the A-league in 2 1/2 years, I would be too embarrassed at this point, even though I have a standing offer. Like you described too many 22 y/o Darren Sproles types for me. I wouldn't enjoy it as I am frankly not fast enough any longer and scoring 2-3 goals (if I was lucky) in a 15 game season would suck when I used to do that a game.

Wait till you play ice. I started inline hockey @ 15 with my friends on the old Rollerblades that weighed 50 pounds each. We would play every day that weather allowed, even through the summer. It was awesome, I was lucky that I had 5-10 other kids that loved to play hockey like that. We would just skate to the schoolyard after we got home and have informal games. I played with some damn good players, it's a shame they didn't play ice at a young age, none of us did.

I used to play coed soccer in NYC. Started off in a extremely casual league, so it was just showing up, kicking the ball around, then getting drunk at a bar and hoping you hook up with one of the cute chicks. Met quite a few over the years. As I got better I moved into more competitive leagues, and wasn't able to play with girls anymore without nearly killing them. The game is just too intense for them, especially indoor. I remember one dude really going after the ball and knocking a girl down. I said "come on, man, we're playing with girls. Be careful." And all the totally independent women started calling me out on it, as if what I said was a huge fuckn offense. Whatever.

I now do scrimmages out here with a bunch of random British expats, who are all a bunch of cunts who take scrimmages way too seriously. The Asian local who organize get really sensitive about people not showing up, etc, and you have to have the right color shirt.

I'm not surprised adult leagues are dirty. In all seriousness, do you slide tackle someone you want to take out?  I was under the impression soccer was for the most part non contact.

Sliding isn't allowed in co-ed leagues, so I just truck other male players.  I've run over a few girls (on accident).  I'm not going to stop if they jump in my way, but I'm not intentionally trying to hurt them or run over them.

I played in a 6v6 small field outdoor league that was all men, and sliding was so freaking gay in that league that they banned it after three games.  Then it just became driving attacks to the sideline with the shoulder and basically pushing them out of play.  I love it that excrement.

Most men's leagues, around here, you'd get an automatic red if you attempt a slide tackle. That's a 4-game suspension and something like a $25 fine. These leagues get pretty heated, My first 4 games, up a division, there have been nearly fights in 2 of them.

I know a couple of people who ref, all ages, both genders, and both have told me the over-30 leagues are the worst of the bunch and that the money they make for it is often not worth it. Even in the kid's leagues...they tell me the parents are the worst (same demo). Crazy.

To echo Heismanberg...I've seen plenty of injuries, a few of them pretty serious, and I've been in these leagues for 5 years now. It gets physical, I'm kinda surprised that even needs to be questioned. The Premier League is about as physical as it gets, at that level.

More of a hard man reputation than an actual hard man, though. Proper hard men were players like Stuart Pearce and Terry Butcher. Pearce played the last ten minutes of the first half of one game with a broken leg, then refused to go to hospital at half time because he wanted to go back out. Terry Butcher, well:

Definitely English if they're using the word "plonker".

It's not trash talk, though. It's how British men talk to each other. One of my very closest friends and I traditionally greet each other with, "All right, queynte?". It's an entirely normal method of interaction that carries no ill will, and taking offence simply marks you out as being a bit of a sensitive flower - which is probably the subconscious point of it all in the first place.

It's an endless source of amusement to Brits and Australians (who use the word even more than us) that North Americans get so bent out of shape about the word.

I'll probably watch that when I get home, just to be on the safe side.

I love the word. I hate how many people get their panties in a wad over it. I said it once in public a while back around a group of friends, and some queynte (a friend of a friend) damn near had her jaw-drop to the floor and started to lecture me on how rude I was.

I would have told her "shut up, queynte" but 1) I was trying to be nice since she was a friend of a good friend, and 2) I hadn't seen that episode of Dexter yet.

In hindsight, I haven't seen her in ages so I probably should have let her have it.

I had an acquaintance whose Dad played in the Dutch pro league way back when, I think he had a song and a dance with the National side as well. Anyway, he played two weeks with a gangrous toe that at one point had maggots coming out because he didn't want to lose a roster spot and didn't give a freak if he lost the toe, he did. My competitive team has no pitching worth a excrement, we are 0-3. I'm happy with my offensive line, .555 ba(5-9), no K, 2 walks, 2 HR, 5 RBI. We have another guy who is 10-10 with 10 singles, which is neat.

My other league...I don't think I'm gonna even bother going to another game. The dumb braud who organized it recruited 22 people, of which 18 are guys. It's a waste of time and I just went to the first 2 games to get drunk off someone elses beers.

I got a tourny this weekend, but it's a stupid derriere "evening event". G1 friday is at 9:45PM, and G2 for us is at 11:15pm. These games determine our seeding for Saturdays all day stuff(we have 2 games Sat during the day, and maybe one in the evening, depending how we do. Then another one Sunday morning. blehh

softball freaking suuuucks if you don't have a decent pitcher. Ours couldn't make it to the game Thursday and we don't really have a legitimate backup.  We promptly got mercied by the #1 team in our league in a few innings.

Yeah but anyone can pitch in softball. You just need to lob it over the plate. Unless you're playing fast pitch softball?
Title: Re: Rec Sports
Post by: IATA on May 26, 2014, 07:06:26 PM
There's rules in organized lob ball, ball has to be at least 6 feet, no more than 12 feet.  It has to hit the 2 by 3 plate and cannot be thrown too hard to be considered a "fast ball". It's not easy to consistently meet these rules and not be throwing beach balls for the guys.

We had a good pitcher but hus wife had birth complications and he had to drop out to care for her and the kid. Now we have guys who get called for illegal pitches half the time and throw meatballs the rest of the time.

it sounds easy in theory but very hard to do on the field.  If you're playing against assholes they can just stand there with the bat on their shoulders and work walks all day. and as IATA said, if you throw meatballs each team has a few guys that can take you yard.

the time before last that our pitcher missed a game the 1st inning went like this:

Walk, Walk, Walk, Grandslam Bomb. that was not the end of the runs that inning.

I never volunteer to pitch, even for batting practice. (I feel bad for the guys batting, I can't give them anything decent to hit). I can't get consistently get the ball over the plate, let alone throw strikes.  I haven't played in a while, but I used to be able to easily throw strikes overhand with a baseball.
Title: Re: Rec Sports
Post by: Tommy on May 26, 2014, 08:29:43 PM
Played in a few rec softball leagues over the last few years, and started out at pitcher since I suck balls out on the field. I would have really bad innings like you described above where I can't get it over the plate, and assholes are just taking walks. That used to pee me off. For the most part I was pretty consistent. I thought I just sucked, but I guess it really is tough.

I first volunteered to pitch when I joined this Zogsports social league. We had way too many players, so a lot of people had to be subbed in and out, which sucks, so I figured the only way I could be on the field at all times is if I volunteer to be the pitcher. Just sort of stuck after that.

I'd love to have a go at baseball/softball. Playing cricket I was always a decent fielder, average batsman and a pretty poor bowler (spin, not pace). I don't know anyone else who plays though, and I'm fairly sure no team wants someone who has never played before.

God damnit. We had a tourny this weekend, except it was full of ringers, save 2 teams. Our tourny was a high-fee, high-reward tourny($500 to enter, top 3 teams pull in $2500 in prize money, 8 teams w/ free beer and food for the teams).

Game 1 Friday we lost 23-3 to a team who was sponsored by Miken(they make bats), so they're good. Game 1 today was against the other local team, which was great. We lost 16-15, but that's because 3/4 of our team was buzzed in the sun and couldn't field worth a excrement.

Game 3 was a waste of time. This team was the SWOntario region champions, based out of a town 3 hours away. Sponsored by ADIDAS and Rawlings, so you see where this is going. The first 27 pitches went over the fence, and due to rules in our league, a 4th homer by any person is an auto out. So instead they started lining it wherever they felt like. We couldn't change pitchers because our 2 bench guys bailed sometime during the homer-show, and the pitcher can't be a field replacement during the inning, unless injury.  Their pitcher was nuts, it felt like we were batting against CC freaking Sabathia. We got mercied after 1 inning, down 44-0, this is after the ump told them we were going to bat through the order one time regardless of outs. I got the closest to getting a hit, a line shot that would have cleared the fences but Willie Mays decided to climb the fence and grab it.

They beat the other local team Friday night 65-0 in 2 innings because the ump didn't know the rules, so we got that going for us.

We expected the local organizer to keep it local, since it was supposed to benefit the local field. 4 of the teams in our league didn't even know there was a tourny until they saw people at the park.

If a tournament (in any sport) is advertised, usually strong teams from all over the area will enter.

The flag football league that I used to play in had teams that had been together for almost a decade and they would beat teams with guys that got chances in the NFL.

I was in a fairly competitive league and we took it very seriously...but some of these dudes live for pay tournaments.  The two tournaments I played in were awful because two to three teams just destroyed everyone - put up 50+ points on every they played until they faced each other.

I played in this 7v7 tournament called Coastal Clash with teams from NC and SC in 2010.  We had four players on my team that played college football (Central Michigan, UAB, Michigan State, and Coastal Carolina).  Didn't even make it to the quarterfinals.
Title: Re: Rec Sports
Post by: IATA on May 31, 2014, 07:05:29 PM
I knew we would get some good teams, but 6 of 8 is ridiculous. And again, it wasn't advertised to the locals very well as a 3rd of the teams had no idea, and 5 of the remaining 8 were told only Tuesday about the Friday tourney.

The 2 local teams only got in because the mother of a guy on my team approved the permits and mentioned it to him and his brother (who plays on the other team).

The organizer did a pee poor job, claiming "I assumed you guys would find out".

Whatever,  it is what it is. The local field will get a new dirt surface (we have those painful little stones now) and a batting cage. It was still fun, but it would have been nice to have 3 fun games and some bragging rights for a local crew.

So I joined an amateur soccer team here in HK and it's 11 a side full field. I've normally only ever played 5 on 5 indoor or 7 on 7 half field. I'm lost. I'm offsides constantly and I'm also tiring myself out big time. Just used to being all over the place.

Can anyone who plays 11 on 11 give me any tips on positional play? I play RW on half field though may have to change my position if I can't get into this.

Don't go offsides all the time, duh!
They let you play up front?

Playing wing is all about timing your runs. I'm more of a defensive minded player and maybe JE can help you out more, but you just have to stay even with left fullback when you see a middie looking to make a through pass or a long ball. It's not particularly easy, more instinctual which is why, I think some people are more suited to play up top than others.

You're not going to run as much as a middie or a stopper but you're gonna be running more sprints as opposed to consistent running, and you're on the wing so just stay on the midline when the ball is on the defensive side of the field to conserve your energy.

I noticed you said you're "used to being all over the place," another way of conserving energy (and not pissing your teammates off) is staying in position. Every guy on your team serves a purpose on the field.

That's the best I've got.

Move to defense?

At wing, stop making unnecessary runs.  If you aren't conditioned, you are going to wear yourself down early.  Pay attention and pass the ball.  It's not difficult to find the last defender.  I don't think you're going to see many major switch crosses in that level, so just get on the same page with the mids closest to you.

Do not constantly carry the ball inside.  Stay outside and spread the field out.  I freaking hate it when forwards try to play hero ball and completely leave one side of the field empty.

I usually played in the midfield, so I would only carry the ball if I had a person I could burn in front of me or a lot of space.  I always looked to pass so I could hang back and then show if the forwards got in trouble.

I did play up top every now and then, and I would just basically treat it as intervals.  Like guinness said, time your runs.  If you run by everyone and get called for offsides, it's wasted energy.  Plus, most teams are going to see you always back there and take advantage of it.

Can anyone who plays 11 on 11 give me any tips on positional play? I play RW on half field though may have to change my position if I can't get into this.

Maintain your width, especially when your defenders have the ball on your side of the field.  I tell my kids to have paint on their shoes (be on the sideline) and not to just run away from the player with the ball in a fly pattern, which sounds like what you are doing.  You need to provide your fullbacks, who are under stress, and midfielders with an outlet.   Keeping wide, facing them, and telling them when you are open in space will also open up the field for inside players.

In the offensive zone, you need to work on timing your runs.  Keep your width, and read your midfielders when they have the ball.  Face the play, and try to remain a few steps on the ball side of the last defender.  Try to time your sprint with the point where your guy with the ball picks his head up and looks your way.  Don't leave early - Keep an eye on the last line of defense and run along that line inside (perpendicular or diagonal from sideline) if you need to to stay onside.  If he doesn't pass you the ball, re-establish your position out wide.  Depending upon how the wing defender is playing you and his/your speed, you might be able to outrun him on a through ball.  If not, or if you get too tired, find open pockets of space out wide and continue to provide an outlet as the team moves up the field.

When you get far enough down the sideline into the offensive zone, your primary responsibility is to cross the ball towards the middle of the field without hitting it to the goalie.  This is an art, and it requires you to have a quick look, while you are under pressure, to see where your players are before crossing.  Make the easy pass along the ground if it is there, but if you have to hit and hope, try to loft the ball to head height or lower towards six yard box at the far post.

When the ball is deep on the other side of the field, pinch inside but always give yourself room in case the ball switches back to your side.  If your opposite wing has the ball and he is looking to cross, you need to be busting your derriere to get to the far post away from the ball (keeping onside).  Attack the ball when it is crossed as it is doubtful that defenders facing the ball will see and react to your run - That is how you score your goals, and that is where you should focus your running.  You may make that run to the far post 10 times and only see the ball once, but that one time could be an easy tap in goal.

There a lot more to it than that, but that's a start.

To echo jetaho...if you're a winger/coming in from the opposite flank and the ball is on the other side of the field, the back post is your friend.

How you play the position is also significantly affected by your team's formation and strategy. The role a winger plays in a 3-5-2 is very different to a 4-4-2 which in turn is very different to a 4-3-3. Much also depends on what kind of a player you are and who you're facing.

Ha, yeah they put me up there because I told them that's what I play. I may be a little over my head though as I've never played organized 11 on 11, and it showed. I told the captain that I'm not married to the position and he can move me wherever he sees fit, but since it's a 20 person team with rolling unlimited subs, I doubt it'll be much of an issue during the season. I still want to give it a shot.

I'll be more conscious of the timing and staying in position though. Thanks for that.

Wow, thanks for that. All great advice. I tried to stay on the right side near to the sideline, but kept ending up in the center (we played a 3-4-3), and I always felt that if I wasn't running I wasn't doing my job, but it ended up being a lot of unnecessary sprints. I'm going to keep all this in mind for the next scrimmage, especially the part about adjusting my position with the posts.

Yeah, I got burned a few times. Kept calling for the ball while I was offsides. It's something I have to get used to, as I've never played with offsides. I'm generally very good at finding holes in defenses, and getting through. Have to adjust my approach considerably it looks like, especially with spreading the field.

Yeah, this is where not watching soccer hurts me. I have no real working knowledge of gametime strategies etc, and I'm awful at positional play. When I play indoor or half field, I'll run up and down the entire right side. At least these guys can see that and will give me pointers on the field. One dude got annoyed about me being offsides and he gave me a bit of attitude. Yes, he was a Brit.

So wait, are you playing on the wing of the midfield four or as a wing forward as part of the three?

Yeah up top.

OK, that's a funny position to play because it's really neither winger nor forward, but a hybrid of the two. I can see how you'd easily get caught offside a lot there.

Key to playing as a front three is to recognise that everything pivots around the centre forward. You need to be playing off his position, don't get ahead of him unless you actually have the ball or it's played in behind your opposing full back to run onto. Look for his runs and support him when he has his back to goal - when he receives a ball up the middle he's going to need to look for layoffs to either side. When the ball is on the other side of the field tuck inside and assume the position of a wide striker looking for long balls and rebounds; when it's central move wide to pull the full back out with you and create space in the middle.

Don't try and come inside with the ball if you can help it because a three man front line creates congestion - diagonal runs into the box just make it harder for you to play an effective ball. Do your best to go past your full back and put the ball in from wide, this will take your full back and hopefully one of their centre halves out wider and give your players more space. If the centre forward understands his role his runs in that situation will always be towards the near post, thus pulling his man marker with him and creating room for the other wing forward to run into. Never be afraid to put a ball into the box, even if it's a bad ball you can always count on a defender to screw up.

Key message here: if you watch your centre forward and play off his position, you'll rarely get caught offside.

Listen to this.

So I play in a few hockey leagues, both of which are "A" divisions. A couple of buddies of mine, guys I grew up with asked me to play with them. The league is a "C" division. The goalie hasn't played goal in 18 years, and 5 of the players started playing a year or so a go, they are all really bad (except for me and one other guy).

We played our first game Sunday, close game we won 8-7. I had 5 goals and this other guy had a pair. Guys in the league complained (guys who work at the rink) I was playing with this team, so after the game the GM who runs the men's hockey league (is a girl) complained about me playing. Now if this was a rule that I couldn't play,  cause I play in another division, then I wouldn't BUT the guys who complained all play in the same division AND play in the higher divisions as well.

I told them unless it's in writing (league rules) then I am playing. There are  teams way better then the "C" team I play with I just though these guys had some balls complaining.

Earlier this week I got kicked out of the HK golf recreation group because I haven't gone to their last 3 meetups. Apparently at least once a month is a rule. Which is retarded.

Today I got banned from my boxing gym because I cancelled a session last minute twice in a row. I woke up with a headache and didn't feel like going.

Strike 3 for rec sports for me. At least I still have those British cunts in the soccer pickup group.

If you offered to pay, I don't see what the problem is.  If I have a cancellation, I'll allow it once.  After that, it's a full charge unless I'm given 24 hours notice.  I certainly don't drop clients who are willing to pay me to not work.

That's just childish to ignore you with no explanation.

HK is notorious for their god awful customer service. I'm not surprised. The last boxing gym I went to decided to replace all boxing classes with muy thai and MMA on a whim, even though I had signed up for 3 months just to attend their boxing classes. When I complained, they tried to convince me how awesome MMA is blah blah. Had a month left, and I couldn't get a refund.

Finally found a boxing gym that allows signups on a per class basis, now that's fucked. Oh well.

I have a lot of issues with this town.

That's honestly not too surprising, I think Americans get judged rather quickly in those types of places for any behaviors that seem to be too 'pushy' or just not the way things are done.

I can't speak for Asia, but I can tell you that there's none of that in the UK.

Is the first one the 11-a-side soccer team you were talking about the other day? If so it seems a bit harsh but maybe they're just a bit more competitive than you're ready to be in a form of the game you're not comfortable with. Sounds like they're being dicks, but there are obviously other teams (otherwise who would they play?) so maybe find a slightly more welcoming team in the same league, and then kick the excrement out of the guys who just binned you.

To the golf, I've got nothing. Sounds odd.

The gym, I get that. If you don't have a relationship with them and you look early on like you're going to be unreliable, if they've got demands on their time from other clients then they're going to dump you. My trainer would do the same - it's not a brilliantly well paid job and they do it because it's their passion. Unless they're desperate for every dollar, they're going to ditch unreliable clients and fill their time with the ones who offer the best chance of a long term commitment.

I am super competitive (especially in leagues that I pay to play in) and I will get pissed off at guys on my team that half-derriere it or just flat out suck.  I'm not sorry about it either.

You have a choice in most adult leagues:  competitive and recreational

Why in the hell would someone sign up for competitive if they can't or don't want to compete?  I will never understand that.

That's fine, but the dude came to me. And I'm honest with my abilities. There's no way that I was out of place enough to warrant this sort of response. I wasn't half assing either. Sure, I may not have much experience with 11 on 11, but it's not like I was completely lost out there. Whatever. I don't think I could've committed to a full season anyway. Playing every saturday evening wouldn't work for me.

It's far from unusual for the goalie to be the Psycho. I played on a team with a goalie called Peebs, he was about my size with a shaved head. Lovely guy off the pitch, but as soon as he got between the sticks he became a screaming eye-bulging headcase.

I've been running anywhere between 3.5 to 6 miles per run lately, throwing in the occassional wind sprint here and there, but nothing ever compares to the intensity and lulls of playing 90 minutes.

Ehh my Mens league team sucks balls, 4-5 good players and 6-7 god awful ones, we can't compete against the teams with no bad players. The over 40 we should win every game unfortunately we have a group of forwards that are out to freaking lunch, so freaking lazy. I am playing defense in that league because I am one of the few that can actually make a breakout pass.

we use those in one of my leagues, they still fuckin fly, just not to the extent. We can only hit houses across the street now, as opposed to the houses behind them. They had to build a net over our fences because windows and cars kept getting fucked. Depending on the core, they can be heavier, too. That's frustrating, but you get used to it.

We're losing 3-1 about halfway through the 2nd half and we start pressing and I put home a close-in header to make it a one-goal game. We then score 2 goals to get the 4-3 lead and we closed it out comfortably. Very satisfying win.

Me and a couple of younger (late-30s) guys have gone to this new team because the team we were on folded. This team supposedly beat them 9-0 last season so to win 4-3 shocked the excrement out of them--and I think our guys too.

I have to admit it: my legs are sore as excrement.

Send Tanner Glass after the queynte who slew footed you.

You should play my team.

We have two forwards who are good. Everyone else is at the Mendoza line for not sucking (I'm one notch above that line), or they are brand new to the game. 2 guys are playing organized hockey for the first time, and one guy is skating for the first time. 3 of 8 guys are brand new, we play 4 v 4 roller (aka tee ball hockey).

We're having fun, and we're all friends that decided to get a team together, but 3 friends who are brand new at the sport requires a ton of patience.

The name of the game this season: Don't get mercy'd. Lose 7-1, but play to the end.

See I don't mind playing on a team with my friends if they can't play.

Last night I had a legit A-player as center, he's my regular center. I was forced to play RW, I like the off wing, LW, but because some German douchebag showed up, I had to play right. The thing is the guy was all over the freaking place, especially on my wing, add to it the douchebag will only pass if there is nothing left.  The last 5-6 games the center and I are averaging at least 2 goals each a game, he's younger and faster so he is averaging more than that even. This guy arrives and we get hardly anything against a mediocre team. It was ridiculous, freak him.

I get frustrated with guys that should be better but can't even make an adequate breakout pass. Puck hogs and bad passers drive me banana's. The guy who runs the team, his son plays defense and to this day has to be the single dumbest player I have ever seen, it's stick handle through five players even though he's 260 pounds and slow or make a break out pass to no one in particular. His Dad is a Dr. ugh.................. Rant off

Some guy in our league got suspended 5 games for a slew foot. Yeesh

I hate slew footing, it's among the top 2-3 most dangerous things you can do to an opponent. I can honestly say I have never even tried it and would never. Of course playing you can side swipe a dude by accident, I am not sure what the case was last night. I would like to think that it was an accident.

I don't mind either, but I hate ending games early. We played one of the worst teams in the league over the weekend and lost by 4, and we were without our two worst guys. When they play this coming weekend, it might be over quick. Three guys came off winning teams to play on this team, so I worry about them bitching. One of them loves to bitch, and I'm the de facto GM of this team, so I gotta be the one to handle the egos. I'm just happy to be playing again after the winter.

It certainly is  and congrats.

Here is my story from last night:

Had a hockey game last night, we were playing one of the better teams in the league. We finally had a complete 1st line, we found a RW to play with the center and I. We're up 5-0 going into the 3rd. Of course they score 30 seconds into the 3rd. The disaster of a player I mentioned last week shows up late and ruins our forward lines because the guy running the bench is a schmuck. I sit for 5 minutes in the middle of the period and in those 5 minutes they score 2. I tell the bench jockey to call a timeout. Tell the defense to stop letting the other team behind them, and get the puck out. Nothing changes. About 5 minutes later the other team cuts the lead to 5-4, they get a 2-0 break. Yes our defense is that stupid.

With 2:50 to go, I am on the bench because the guy that came late is out there forever. Bench jockey puts the fattest slowest player in the league (it aint me assholes). I tell him what the freak are you doing? We're playing a fast team do you want to win? 20 seconds later the game is tied, they went right around him. So we blew a 5-0 lead, I was on the ice for 1 goal against and wound up sitting the last 5 minutes because of freak nut wouldn't get off the ice.

I was glaring at bench jockey after the tying goal. So they call a penalty against us with 1 minute left. Bench jockey says for me take Martin off, Martin is the useless guy. So we manage to kill the minute off rather easy, the center and I controlled play. There's a 5 minute overtime.

freak that guy I am not coming off in overtime. We kill the remaining minute off, I send the center on a break away, he flubs it. It's back in our end and the fat guy does something right he chips the puck to me and I look up and ship a cross rink pass to center who scores on the break away. We freaking won 6-5 ......ugh. I wound up with 3 goals and 2 assists and got benched pretty much the entire 3rd.

He's a Dr. that forgot his cup and didn't play, he's the most awful hockey player I have ever seen. But a super nice guy and gets the team sponsored, he was running the bench as awful as he plays. His son the defenseman, got the recessive gene, the single dumbest least intuitive player I have ever seen.
Title: Re: Rec Sports

Nice guys who can't play well have to learn to not hog ice time if you're on a team that wants to win.

I play for two teams - a for fun team, and a team that wants to win. On the for fun team, I will take my minutes at EV and on the PP. I'm mediocre. I freak up as much as I make plays, but we're not playing to win it all. It's okay.

The team that is competitive and wants to win? My derriere sits in all close situations, plus special teams. I've even told guys to jump on when we're on special teams or if it's close in the final minutes. I don't take 4 minutes in the 3rd period with 8 minutes left. You're asking to be hated.

freak the Dr and his son for not knowing team etiquette.

One of my teammates was basically assaulted last night. Full windup two hand slash to the neck from behind. freaking scumbag. If you can't handle a freaking poke check to your stick, don't play hockey. The refs had to end the game with 8 minutes left on the clock because our bench cleared to go after this guy and you can bet your derriere we were gonna start running people on the other team once play resumed. That pussyfaggot is lucky he didn't hurt our guy or there would have been a confrontation outside the locker rooms or in the parking lot. We just played our last game of the season (well...my last, I'm missing the last game to go to the tailgate) and I got my first yellow card in more than 20 years. Good times. We did win 7-2. Blowout wins are rare for us.

Enjoy the blowout.

I was the 3rd man in (really the 4th or 5th man in but they called me for it) and I took down the guy I was going after with a real nice shot, he didn't get up after that and I made sure he stayed at the bottom of the pile. Then I planted a scrawny little bitch with 1 left hand that decided to get in my face after the fact.

Signups were tonight. Aka drink pitchers at the bar and sign the roster sheet. This season is gonna be a shitshow. I'm gonna tear my hair out just trying to field a full team this season. Guys really turn into noncommittal pussies after they get the whole wife and kids deal. This stuff (men's league softball) is important.

I scored the weirdest goal of my life tonight. Got in alone on a perfect pass from the winger (I was playing CM) and went low right corner. Keeper makes a great reaction kick save. Ball comes off his foot, right off my face (mostly nose and upper lip) and rolls right into the net. It hurt but I was laughing before it even went in.

Same excrement in my leagues except even when they know you they don't get it right, I find it hilarious actually. Th other night they screwed up an assist and the goal on a clear 2 on 1. I passed it across and the guy taps it into an open net. Pretty clear and we were the only 14 and 24 on the roster. Lol 2 guys not even on the ice got the goal and assist.

We lost our first game in 8 games yesterday. We'd won 5 times and tied twice but we ran into a juggernaut yesterday...a bunch of Jamaican dudes from Queens, half of which are my height. 6-1. I played incredibly hungover the week before and managed to half-volley one in from the top of the box.

Ran my first sub 20 minute 5k last Saturday too. I still don't believe it.

I've been doing "Indian runs" during my jogs lately. I do about 1.6/1.7 miles with my dog. I bring him home and then run another 2 to 3 miles myself doing a sprint about every minute or so and go back into a jog (no walking). This wasn't exactly the most well attended 5k I've ever done, so once I got some space I started throwing in some of those 100m or so sprints, which I'm sure helped my time. I finished 5th overall.

We've only played 3 games and we did a full 11v11 pickup the first week (the other team forfeited) with freaking 20 year olds and I'm having really no problem playing the full 90. I played defensive mid 3 times and i played behind the 2 up top guys this past Sunday because we were missing 3 of our usual middies.

Jesus, that's less than 7 minute per mile on average. I ran a 5.5k at 26min, which is a little under 8min miles I think. That was my best ever.

I really miss running. Ever since I got my heel spurs, which still haven't healed, my Achilles starts to ache after a half mile. At least I'll always have that Half Marathon. Still can't believe I did that.

When I was in high school playing on the team, I could run a sub-6:20 mile. I could maybe do that now if I really tried, but I'm not trying to win races, I'm just trying to stay in footie shape. I have so much more will power now then I had back then, it's stupid.

Yeah, I sort of have the same thing too. In High School I was thinner, but couldn't run a mile and could barely bench 135lbs. I feel like I'm in way better shape now than I ever was. Funny how that works.

I'm definitely in better shape now than I was in high school or, even, my 20s. With my kids I have little to no free time, BUT, whenever I do, I do something. And, my wife is always exercising of some sort so she can't say excrement to me.

I do some kind of exercise every day and I, generally, do push-ups and sit-ups (sometimes dips) before I shower. I run twice a week, play my match on Sunday and hit the weights 2 or 3x a week. When I played soccer and basketball in high school, it was practice and the games and that was it. I didn't touch a weight or exercise otherwise unless I was forced to.

I haven't played baseball in like a decade but the last time I played a legit game my buddy was pitching. He's no ace or anything, but he can throw 85mph and he had a decent curve (legit movement on it) and he tried to sneak a fastball by me and I made perfect contact with it and I just knew I got it all and just dropped the bat and began to trot. It felt freaking fantastic. I probably hit it a good 375/380 feet.

I remember being taken to a batting cage in Japan by a friend, and the entire place stopped to watch me hit some balls, thinking that because I'm a white American I'd be crushing it. They got me into the 120km/hr cage (about 75mph), and I probably made contact with one ball out of 15. The looks on their faces were like a bunch of kids who just got told that there's no Santa Claus.

My daughter had soccer practice last night so I decided that since my boys and I are running a bunch of 5K or greater races this spring/summer, it would be better to run around the soccer field a bit than sit in a chair for an hour. Only made it a mile before my legs felt like they were going to give out. It's amazing, I can do an hour on the eliptical machine but then try and run a mile on an otherwise perfect night and I can't crack 12 minutes.  Going to need to ease into this one, I think.

Same here.  I don't exercise as much as I should, but in my mind I still have the stamina I had in high school.  Then I go out and try to jog and reality reminds me that I'm not 18.  Gotta keep going though, even if it's slow.

Mendelbaum!!! I didn't run last year because of a foot surgery but prior to that we ran all summer. Just takes a few weeks to ease back into it. The biggest thing for me for the first couple of runs is dealing with shin splints.

If you're getting shin splints:

- check your shoes aren't over worn and that they fit properly
- think about your gait, make sure you're not overstriding and heel striking
- don't run as far to start with, better to do short runs more frequently than long runs less frequently

Shin splints are caused by the lining between your calf and your tibia getting irritated - you want to reduce the impact and wear until your body gets back into the swing of things.

Thanks for the feedback.

The shoes were selected for me by our local running store 2 years ago- not an incredible amount of mileage on them and they are very comfortable.
Gate hasn't changed from what I can see.
Must be the distance. I think that a mile straight was too much to start. At my ripe age, easing back in is definitely the best practice.

You can keep up the distance, but try doing walk/run until you're back in the groove. Alternate one minute running and one minute walking, then increase to 2:1, then 5:1, then 10:1 until you're ready to run consistently. The problem with inflammation/irritation injuries like shin splints is that you can't run through them, you have to rest properly before they'll go away. I used to have the same problem with ITBS, and still do if I'm not careful with the longer distances.

Just had a walkoff hit in extra innings. I’m just glad to get the W since we got walked off on in our first game and mercied in our 2nd game.

So...first time since I joined the men’s league that I didn’t score a goal the entire season but we went 5-1-2 which I believe is our best season so I have to say I’m pretty damn happy right now. For years we had guys I didn’t trust enough to faithfully pass the ball to them (paging Tommy) but now we have a solid lineup, I’m playing stopper/def mid again, I had 2 assists tonight. Feels pretty freaking good. I’m one of the “old guys” on the team now and I don’t mind. I’ve been asked to go up and play forward or that “9” spot on the field and now I can just laugh. I feel at home in the back and now we have the kind of guys where I don’t have to do that.

Got into my first good hockey fight in a while. In summary:

hoo-ha on the other team completely cheap shots my good friends 60+ year old dad in retaliation for a routine defensive play. Friend’s dad literally lifted his stick in front of our net, guy follows him all the way down the ice and then takes him out from behind as soon as the puck comes to him.

I get in this guy’s face and let him know how big of a hoo-ha he is. More than a few times. He comes at me and I give him a couple shoves in the chest. Couple other guys start pushing each other.

Eventually this guy puffs up his chest. And headbutts me helmet to helmet. I don’t even move, laugh hysterically right in his grill because it has no effect. He freaking headbutts me again. Nothing more than a tough guy move since we both have cages on.

One of teammates gets more involved once that happens, charges him and nails him into the boards. This guy locked up with my buddy and a ref, and at this point I see an opening, say freak it, I step around the group, wound up and threw a haymaker right under this guy’s chin. I’ve never swung this hard in a hockey fight, maybe my life. It was a cheap shot since I wasn’t squared up with him, but in my book once you start throwing headbutts around all bets are off. I connect cleanly, and this guy is knocked back a few feet. I’ll give him credit here, he gathered himself, took a few seconds, and came right back at me.

The sea of refs and players parted and we square up. He lands his first 2 shots right in my face, knocked my helmet off- I was a beat slow because I didn’t really think the guy would come after me or that the refs would let us go at it- they break up not fights immediately. But those little bitch punches were his fatal flaw, now he was right in my killzone. I reach out with both arms, grab his helmet and rip it off, and snapped him up in a bear hug. I move my grip to his neck, close him off in a headlock, and threw him down to the ice with that basic hip/leg sweep.

That was all she wrote. I had him pinned, from a side mount, and in a headlock. He had one free hand and basically tried to remove my face for the remaining 15-20 seconds that it took them to break it up. I now have a bruise from this cocksuckers finger just under my eye socket. Felt like I was more than justified grinding the back of this guy’s skull into the ice while he was trying to gouge my eye out.

I also may have done more damage to my own hand/wrist than that guy’s face. It’s pretty fucked up right now. Man, that was invigorating. Men’s league hockey is missing that thrill of lining someone up and hitting them into next week, so the occasional scrap really makes you feel alive.

Softball playoffs. Beat our opponent in the first round of the playoffs 2 games to 1. Lost game 1 of the championship series 12-11. Came into today neededing to win game 2 continue and game 3 to win the ship. Won the first game 14-13 on a 3 run walkoff HR and then won game 2 14-3. My 3rd championship managing this team and I’m probably hanging it up after this upcoming fall ball season. This one was awesome, it was against our biggest rival who all talk a ton of excrement. The walkoff crushed their spirits and watching them go completely silent and roll over like dogs in the 2nd game was the sweetest revenge.

Signed up for a flag football tournament for today.

Only two teams in this thing, so how is it a tournament?

The dude that’s running it is still trying to get us to pay a $100 entry fee.

Maybe when 4 more teams show up.

I'm playing two sports on company teams:  flag football and soccer

The entire IT department signed up for flag football and the 6'6 former point guard from Texas State tore his Achilles playing basketball, so I have the worst receivers in the history of sports.  It's literally me and a bunch of Asian and Indian dudes out there.  We will not win a game.

I have mother fuckers out there throwing a football underhanded.

Lost 2-0 in men’s league hockey championship last night.

We were missing half our roster due to the holidays, and unfortunately it was most of our top players. Got dominated the whole game but our D and goalie kept us in it. Let up the 2nd goal with 2 minutes to go in the game.

We were the #1 team in the league in the regular season and only lost 2 games but that’s just the way excrement happens sometimes
