The Raiders issue wasn't paying these guys and front loading contracts.
It was the fact that they're acting like a win now team, rather than a team that needs a serious rebuild.
With Denver, chiefs, and the Chargers around they shouldve been getting young guys longer deals to get them on more of a favorable position in a few years.
Almost like what Idzik is doing here.
Focusing on the draft, and young free agents.
And only using older guys when they're very cheap and short term low guarantee deals
That's pretty much the same thing i was saying.
However, to be somewhat fair to McKenzie, i forgot they traded away a bunch of their 2012 picks before he got there. So he really only had last year's draft and whatever this year's yield. Trading a pick for Matt Flynn (and Schaub) and the Tyler Wilson draft pick reinforce that he's an idiot though. And all you have to do is hear him speak to know that. He sounds like a future CTE specimen

The penalty for the cap floor is weird, after four years the team has to pay the current players whatever they're short. Big freaking deal.

It's not horrible but as a fan it'd be such a waste of the cap. Instead kf signing a FA or re-signing your own you end up just giving money away

If both McFadden and Jones-Drew stay healthy, their rushing attack will be alright.
I expect Schaub to be a god at checking the ball down. Nobody will be blocking for him.

Maurice Jones-Drew's three-year contract with Oakland has a base value of $7.5 million with $1.2 million guaranteed.
The only guaranteed portion is Jones-Drew's 2014 base salary of $1.2 million. There was no signing bonus, and MJD could be released next offseason with no ramification on the Raiders' cap. It's telling that Jones-Drew couldn't do better than this on the market. Oakland now has him "locked up" through age 31.
Wow, I would have been fine beating that number.

I don't think anyone is, but being in a RBBC lessens the impact and allows an older RB to last a little longer.

Neither am I, but MJD at what is essentially a one-year deal for the vet minimum? Heismanberg pointed out that he's been one of the best pass protecting backs in the league for years. He could have been exactly what LT was for us.

I would have been ok with him but I'm not upset we didn't get him either.
Also, I think LT was a way better player overall.

we signed LT when we were contenders.
MJD would merely be a stopgap player while we rebuild. But at that figure, hard to believe we didn't bring him in if we were interested.

Baffled. They are dead-set on being competitive in 2014, and 2014 alone.
The tragedy is that they're still getting steamrolled on paper with their roster.

Profootballtalk.com reports the Raiders are leery about signing free agent DeSean Jackson.
GM Reggie McKenzie is reportedly worried about Jackson's reputation as a me-first player who can't be controlled. And considering the Raiders could be in for another long season of piling up losses, it might not be the best idea to have Jackson around throwing a fit. Jackson seems destined to land with the Redskins. He'll continue his visit with Washington on Tuesday.
They're just dragging out the process so DeSean will be a few days older when they finally sign him.

Jon Gruden: Our defense wasn't good last year, even with Khalil Mack https://t.co/pEzehQtpR7
Step 1: Call Raiders
Step 2: Give them all the picks for Mack
Step 3: Give Mack all the moneys
Step 4: Kill Brady until he's dead.
-
I think the Raiders are just going to wait out the Mack thing as long as possible. I think he'll be fine to come in with relatively little camp time. I think the deadline is the start of the season, so it'll be quiet until that gets closer. I doubt he'll get traded. They aren't going to let him go without a huge haul.
He's 27 years old, the Raiders may be fine with just tagging him for 2 years and letting him walk at age 30.

Boner scenario: Derek Carr gets hurt. Jets trade Teddy, a 3rd and 5th rounder to the Raiders for Khalil Mack.

I don't root for injuries, and I really like Carr so I definitely wouldn't wish anything bad on him, but that would be an incredible scenario for the Jets.

i've been thinking about it - the only way a team will give up a lot in return for teddy isn't if they have some freak injury to their guy...yeah, in that situation they may be interested in trading for teddy as a place holder but why invest a ton of draft capital in another qb when they already have the answer at QB already? it's just too wasteful/expensive
the only way a team will give us a huge haul in return is if they are WITHOUT 'the guy' at QB and they think teddy is that guy. he had a fair amount of success in his year prior to the injury and was a pro bowler. he is now proving to be healthy and is showing out with a very decent preseason, and is arguably the front runner in our qb competition.
a guy like jimmy G was young, sat behind tom brady, and showed well in practices and in a handful of spot starts over the past few years. this was enough to get the 49ers to trade a 2nd round pick to the patriots, because they were without a QB and believed this was their guy. garoppolo was similarly on the last year of his deal winding down, ultimately signing an extension to stay with the team, and the 49ers had no problem trading for him cold during the middle of the season.
bo, i know i'd said i see no way a team gives up something like a 2nd for him, and i still believe that to be the case, but i do hope you're right. the only way i see a team give up something like a 2nd rd pick for him either during preseason or during the year, for a guy that will be a free agent in the upcoming year, is if a team is without a franchise QB but believes teddy can be THAT guy for them at QB. it won't be a team who has shitty luck and loses their franchise QB for a little bit that gives us something like that in return. it'll be a team who doesn't have that guy in place already but believes teddy could be that guy.
if this occurs and and we miraculously end up with something like a 2nd for teddy, we'd be in amazing shape. i think at that point we'd have to consider giving up a 1st round pick for khalil mack and seeing if that's enough to entice the raiders. it would solve our pass rush issue instantaneously. we could then use our 2nd round pick for the best OL we could find, and then our 3rd rounder doubling down on another OL, or trying to find a good young RB, as the way the nfl has trended with the position over the past few years has meant that there is absolutely amazing value to be found at the RB position in the 2nd-3rd rounds.
if we pull off something like this and hit with those picks, we'd have filled our biggest holes and put the organization and sam in an amazing position to achieve something. this is all a pipe dream and if something similar occurs, i will jerk off. i don't see a team giving us something very high for TB unless they want him as their franchise guy, we can only hope that this ends up being the case for TB during his time as a jet.
-
The Pats reportedly took less for Jimmy G to get him to the Niners. There were reports they had better offers. No idea went Teddy's value would be in comparison. That said if a team is jammed up by an injury, a 2nd isn't a big ask for a guy that could potentially be a decent starter.

After that Donald deal, the tide may have changed toward the Raiders trading Mack. They can't afford that much. The price tag will be higher next year. Weird situation.
-
Florio sucks and all, but he summarized things pretty well here about Mack.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/08/31/what-does-aaron-donalds-deal-mean-for-khalil-mack/
The last two defensive players of the year, both a year away from the expiration of their rookie deals, held out. Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has gotten paid, a lot. Raiders defensive tackle Khalil Mack hasn’t, yet.
Eventually, he will. With the “how much” issue now set by Donald, the only remaining question is, “By whom?”
Some continue to believe that Mack and the Raiders were waiting for Donald to get a deal done before finishing their own contract. Perhaps the more accurate reality is that the four teams that are seriously exploring a trade for Mack now know what it will take to get Mack, setting the stage for a deal to be done as soon as this weekend.
This isn’t a report or a prediction that a trade is coming. It’s simply an analysis of the circumstances. The Donald deal gives the Raiders clarity regarding what it will take to sign Mack, perhaps allowing them to realize that they just need to move on, especially since Mack’s resolve will now be strengthened by the knowledge of what his ultimate financial reward will be. The Donald deal also gives a potential suitors the information necessary to know what it takes to sign Mack, if an agreement can be reached with the Raiders for compensation.
So keep your eyes open this weekend for potential news that someone has struck a deal with the Raiders for Mack, and in return has struck a deal with Mack for a contract very similar to Donald.

I really didn't think so at first, but I can't imagine Mack and the Raiders all of a sudden agreeing to a deal and it doesn't sound like he's just going to show up week 1 if he knows he could get traded to another team and get a mountain of money.
If you were him, and you heard all these teams calling the Raiders, each of which is ready to back up the Brinks truck for you, why would you even think about showing up on your current deal?
-
Rapsheet:
The #Raiders have been asking for 2 first-rounders during talks centered around star Khalil Mack... and the belief is they can get it, I’m told. It does lend context to Oakland’s decision to listen and potentially deal one of the best players in football.
Packers make all the sense in the world.
Only advantage the Jets would have is likely having a higher first round pick.
I guess Gruden is thinking Mack's prime would be wasted on a rebuilding team (reasonable).

Only thing I can think of, because it happened at the McCarran Airport tunnel, is that he was returning the car and catching a plane. Otherwise yeah, in Vegas you can get a ride in minutes if not seconds.

Las Vegas Review Journal's Vincent Bonsignore writes "multiple teams" are expected to pursue a trade for Derek Carr.
The Raiders "figure to at least listen", especially if offers include multiple first-round picks. Carr's contract is very tradable for both parties. He'd only cost the Raiders $2.5 million in dead cap if traded, and the acquiring team would have Carr for two years at about $20 million per season, all non-guaranteed. Carr finished eighth in expected points added (EPA) per dropback last season and will only be 30 years old in 2021. Bonsignore lists the Colts, Bears, Patriots and Washington as potential suitors, along with the Texans if Deshaun Watson is actually available. If Carr is dealt for draft picks instead of players, the Raiders could turn to Marcus Mariota, who is due $11.4 million this upcoming season, as their short-term answer. But the big dream certainly is to flip Carr and the Raiders' own first-round picks into Watson.
-
I can’t see Carr garnering much interest. He might be “cheap” for a starting QB but who wants him as their starter? Especially enough to trade for him?
And Houston absolutely cannot take on Carr after what they did to David
-
I can’t see Carr garnering much interest. He might be “cheap” for a starting QB but who wants him as their starter? Especially enough to trade for him?

Lol he instantly makes the colts and 49ers better. He would give the steelers flexibility without having to reset.
I just don't know what teams would give for him. I also am not sure what the texans angle really is here. Other than praying for watson this seems like they would set then back a few years

The Texans would be laughed out of the league if they acquired David Carr's little brother to replace Deshaun Watson
-
Yeah, who would want a 29 year old QB that's completed nearly 70% of his passes and thrown for over 4000 yards for three straight seasons?
If he's a true star, why are the Raiders so eager to move on for what most likely is Mariota?
Sure, Carr is a starting caliber QB and not every team has one, but with what's available right now what are you gonna give up to make Carr your QB?
-
If he's a true star, why are the Raiders so eager to move on for what most likely is Mariota?
Because Jon Gruden is an idiot
-
In a podcast interview with Cris Collinsworth and impending free agent Richard Sherman, Raiders coach Jon Gruden hinted at having interest in signing Sherman.
It was basically tampering on Gruden's behalf, as coaches and executives aren't permitted to speak with free agents until two days prior to the start of the new league year, which is in mid-March. But Gruden wasn't biting his tongue. “Richard Sherman, if you are a free agent, which there is a rumor you are, we are looking for an alpha presence in our secondary,” Gruden said. “Somebody that could play this Hawk 3-press technique with the read step. If you’re available and interested, maybe you and I can get together at some point off-air.” The Raiders need secondary help in the worst way and just hired DC Gus Bradley, who coached Sherman in Seattle and will be installing the defense Sherman has played in throughout his career. Turning 33 next month, Sherman isn't expected back in San Francisco.
Yeah that's... clearly tampering. Because:

Given Smith is facing losing his job right now, it's pretty clear why it's suddenly surfacing and where from. Pretty poor look on Gruden though, I'm not sure what possible context that kind of statement would make any sense in.

Gruden also criticized President Obama during his re-election campaign in 2012, as well as then-vice president Joe Biden, whom Gruden called a “nervous clueless hoo-ha.” He used similar words to describe Goodell and DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the N.F.L. Players Association.

Who the freak is Rich Bisaccia?

The turnaround he made with the Raiders was pretty impressive.
I'm sure the players are all going to be pissed about this. Not really sure who the freak wanted him gone, I imagine they're not people who actually watch the nfl
(Gruden 100% said some stupid excrement, and a fine possibly a one game suspension would have been far more appropriate. Maybe make him take one of those Coca-Cola brain washing classes)

I think the emails were found as part of the investigation into the Redskins.
-
Is it unfair for the media to constantly be reporting that Gruden used a racial slur though?
I'm all for being fair, and I think reporting that he was being sexist + racist isn't unreasonable.
But I do believe tht saying he used a racial slur suggests something far worse than actually happened.

One of the most knowledgeable football fans I know is a Raiders fan and he's wanted Gruden gone for the last two seasons. His comment this morning: "We're gonna struggle now rest of season but the good news for me is he's gone. We were going nowhere with Gruden as HC imo, the dismemberment of the O line, the litany of poor first round picks, the giving up on players too quickly, the old school football."

How is 1 day off gonna solve that?
-
How is 1 day off gonna solve that?
Today was the big media day with Mayock, so Nassib being out of the building removes any requests to make him available. This will blow over very quickly IMO, tomorrow it will be all about football again.
-
How is 1 day off gonna solve that?
If I was Nassib I'd definitely appreciate an extra day to prepare for the storm.
-
Absolutely no need to provide access ti Nassib in this situation if he doesn't want to broach the subject.
I smell a carefully crafted statement coming with him making it clear that outside what he's offering in said statement, he will not be discussing this any further.

Agreed, which would also be the right way to handle it. I am presuming that they will not be asking every black player to comment on Gruden's racially toned language, so it seems a bit unfair to ask Nassib to have to be the spokesperson for all gay players, closeted or otherwise. The man did his big thing, now let him play football.
-
Veterans get off for all sorts of reasons.
Why anyone would be upset about Nassib needing a day to process the fact that his head coach was two-faced and likely didn't support him is beyond me.

Maybe. I think that Gruden stepping down immediately is absolutely the right thing to do, but let's also not forget that these emails were a decade ago. That's not to excuse them or him, but it is quite possible that Gruden has grown and changed since then. It's quite possible that Gruden was completely supportive of Nassib, it's all just supposition and guesswork at this point.

I think a lot of my gay and/or BIPOC friends think that I am a very supportive person. I also think that at least some of them would be very upset with me and question a lot about who I actually am as a person if they heard/read some of the jokes that I used to make and once thought to be completely harmless.
Gruden could have been a completely positive impact on Nassib's life and these emails still could have rocked Nassib. Or he could just want an extra day before he has to answer everyone's, "How do you fee about coach Griden's homophobic remarks..." questions.
-

Yes. Agree 100%. I would like to think that my gay and BIPOC friends would feel the same about me, but I know I've said some things in the past that would make them upset with me and rightfully so. Out of misplaced jest or plain ignorance rather than malice, but still.
I'm completely fine with Nassib taking a day to not be part of this story, or for whatever reason. I'm just mostly disappointed in the whole thing. Al Davis probably did more for equal rights than almost anyone else in NFL history, Mark is a chip off the old block, and I thought Chucky was one of the good ones. I find it quite sad.

Wouldn't you know it, Raul from Bayonne or some such character calls up with the "Yeah I know what Hernandez is lookin at is serious, but if dis clears up you think the Jets would go after him?"
Oof, excrement. That's very not good.

Imho, the correct balance of wanting to be there for someone you had a relationship with without minimizing the horrible transgression that took place.
He's not just going through the motions of thanking God for his health and his touchdowns and the millions of dollars like so many athletes seem to, he's actually living the Christian ideology as it's written and taught. I've not much use personally for translations of ancient Aramaic scripts and the embodiment of basic decency as an all powerful sky fairy, but if a plurality of Christians - particularly those in positions of public scrutiny - spoke, thought and behaved like Derek Carr appears to, the world would be a much better place.
Ruggs did an incredibly stupid and reckless thing with absolutely tragic consequences, and the loss of his career and likely his liberty are nothing compared to Tina Tintor's life, but unless you actually believe that he had a specific intent to cause this then he too is in a world of pain that will be with him forever, and to show compassion for him right now is an incredibly strong and decent and valuable thing for Carr to do.
-
The Carrs are just really good people.
-
Derek Carr always seemed a little bit of a weird dude to me, but I think he's just overly religious. He's clearly a very good guy.
People on the internet are jackasses for ripping his comments. He's supporting the guy he knows, which is Ruggs. While it's obviously a crime what he did, it's more of a crime of stupidity and recklessness than malice intent, and that makes it a tragedy for Ruggs as well. Obviously, the biggest tragedy is what happened to the woman, but Carr doesn't know the woman. He knows Ruggs.
-
This is once again a very weird discussion to have in a thread that includes LOL in the title.

Especially since part of Mayock's deal was to bring in high character players. Arnette was a reach and he seems like a mess off the field. Ruggs might have been a good person, but we all know what happened there. The rest of his picks aren't good.
With Gruden gone, who knows what they will end up doing after the season.

He's fine on TV, but the problem is now his reputation takes a few hits, since drafting is supposed to be what he's good at.
The Arnette pick was a reach at the time for a number of reasons, and having it blow up that spectacularly is a big mark against him. I don't really hold Ruggs against him, but I don't think many others were taking Ruggs as the WR1. The Clelin Ferrell pick was worse.

Maybe he can intern for Matt Miller.

The Arnette pick was a reach at the time for a number of reasons, and having it blow up that spectacularly is a big mark against him. I don't really hold Ruggs against him, but I don't think many others were taking Ruggs as the WR1. The Clelin Ferrell pick was worse.

Maybe I'm reading a different quote from you.
But Gruden's case has been that there have been over 350,000 emails in an investigation of the freaking Washington Redskins.
Yet deliberately by the nfl only ones targeting Gruden were publicly leaked, the Raiders were pressured by the league to let him go, and the other emails in the investigation will not be publicly released.
Sure nothing in those emails will absolve or change the fact Gruden has said what he's said. But Gruden was 100% unfairly targeted (who knows freaking why) and as a result of that targeting, Gruden lost tens of millions of dollars if not 100m+ plus has permanently been outcast from society.
I have zero idea legally how strong of a case he has, or if his intentions are just to embarrass the NFL and drag Goodell through the mud.
But at the very least Gruden 100% has a completely legitimate grievance and your criticism of him is not even close to fair

General view of Raiders fans seems to be that he's a good rotational piece but not worth what they were paying him, so yeah. If he comes at the right price then it would make some sense. Assuming Lawson returns fully fit and ready to go, adding a situational rusher would go some way towards making it a less concerning part of the roster.

The #Raiders and star QB Derek Carr have agreed to terms on a 3-year contract extension worth $121.5M, source said. The agreement ties Carr to Las Vegas through the 2025 season. He is already the longest tenured QB in the AFC. 💰 💰 💰

Those AFC West games are going to be must-see TV

figured a new deal for him was coming. He's the biggest reason Adams kind of demanded a trade there. So it only makes sense to lock them both in till 2025.
-
Aaron Nagler of CheeseheadTV reports the Packers are targeting Darren Waller in a trade with the Raiders.
Take this with a gigantic grain of salt, but Nagler has been covering the Packers for a very long time. Waller turns 30 in September and has two years left on his contract, but he's coming off an injury-plagued down season that saw him miss six games en route to a 55-665-2 receiving line where he appeared to take more of a back seat to Hunter Renfrow. The Raiders have now added target-dominator Davante Adams, and the word from Nagler is the Packers and Raiders discussed Waller as part of that Adams trade, but league rules prohibited Waller's inclusion because a franchise-tagged player (Adams) can't be traded for a non-tagged player like Waller. Las Vegas is scheduled to make its first pick in this week's draft at No. 86. Flipping Waller to a starved-for-pass-catchers team like Green Bay in exchange for a high pick would make some sense.
Hmm. til

Josh Jacobs is good
Yes he is, but a first round RB needs to be special. 31 sacks in three and a half seasons from a 4th round pick is an absolute home run of a pick.
I don't think there's a compelling argument that Josh Jacobs with the 24th overall pick is even close to being as good a selection as Maxx Crosby at 106.

Maccagnan drafted quite a few players still making a good career in the NFL and he didn't whiff in the first round outside Darron Lee.
Idzik was considerably worse and probably runs Mayock close - his best pick was Demario Davis and all three of his first round picks were yikes - Coples, Milliner and Pryor. Milliner really should have been good though.

Not a single person in the entirety of Jets fandom would have made that pick differently and it's a wild leap of hindsight to argue that as a mistake by the GM. The error was in asking Bowles/Bates and then Gase/Loggains to be responsible for developing him into an NFL QB and you know that.
-
Agreed. Everyone, from fans, pundits, other football heads, thought Darnold was a generational talent.
There’s a lot to criticize about but the Darnold pick made sense.
-
If we're comparing Maccagnan to Mayock though, Mayock made high picks that were obviously bad or questionable at the time and then predictably didn't work out (excluding Ruggs who could not have been predicted). Most of Maccagnan's failures in the draft were only in hindsight.

We were wrong. It was a bad pick. He got a fresh start and he was still really bad.
Mayfield, Darnold, and Rosen were all bad picks. Hindsight is fair when it comes to the draft. No such thing as a sure thing.
That blind massive trade up set the franchise back. Fortunately for us, Douglas was able to get us back on track by trading Williams, Adams, and Darnold.

that's the point. There's no such thing as a sure thing but there is a consensus. The consensus was Darnold is a safe pick. I don't think you can fault someone for making the safe pick and it not working out.

-
The consensus was Darnold is a safe pick.
No, it wasn't. There was consensus that he was a great prospect but he had turnovers at USC and that didn't get corrected in the NFL.
There wasn't a Trevor Lawrence/Andrew Luck type on that draft class. Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson were gambles compared to traditional passers like Rosen and Darnold. The game evolved and 2 of those 3 gambles are a big part of that. Maccagnan was behind the curve with evaluations.

The larger problem with the Darnold pick is that pre-draft The world was talking about Sam as the most safe guy in the draft, and most likely to be good. Which is why he was an absolute lock to go #1. There were rumblings when we traded to 3 that Sam locked in the #1 slot after his pro day and the browns owner sitting with with Sam’s parents. Sam wore a brown tie on draft night because even then everyone felt confident he’d go #1. Which means we didn’t even trade up for Sam because everyone expected him to be gone by 3. While one could argue gettleman wasn’t trading out, there was no guarantee he wouldn’t. So by going to 3, we were effectively saying our #3 QB was good enough. McCagnan lucked into Sam Darnold being on the board on 3. Who he then ruined with atrocious offensive player and staff management. Thus making it far worse than it might have been.
End of the day it was a franchise altering decision to make that trade and ultimately select Sam. McCagnan was wrong in his process of how to go about the trade and he was in the end wrong about the player he ultimately selected. So even if you want to say “well Darnold was the top guy, he HAD to be the pick when he was on the board” you cannot say the process was good leading to that option.

I agree with everything you've said. I am not defending Duff as a GM or talent evaluator. Simply think Darnold was the right pick at the time. I also remember a lot of negatives about Josh Allen and Lamar was the distant talent among the QBs. Hindsight is a lover of the older lady.

The receiver picks were bad, and were called out at the time.
Otherwise, I largely agree with this.

Go get Carr I swear to God they better get him
-
They get a 5 mil dead cap hit . They'll cut him . Nobody trading for that deal
JD better freaking pounce
-
There will be at least a few franchises interested in signing him. I know he said he'd rather retire than leave the Raiders but cold hard cash matters.
-
Man, I don't know. If we could get Derek Carr for a one year prove-it deal, I'd jump on that and overpay him. But I'm really not sure I want this team financially tethered to him for the foreseeable future. Look what happened in that division this year: Broncos are a talented team everyone thought was ready to compete for a championship, promising young skill players, great defense... and they're absolutely fucked for at least half a decade, probably longer, because they hitched their wagon to Russell Wilson.
The Raiders aren't in much better of a position. Josh McDaniels and Davante Adams basically came to Vegas because of Carr; a few months later, the franchise is so ready to move on that they're benching the guy to avoid locking him into 2023. They're not even mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and they're that committed to getting rid of him.
I know I watched that whole godawful Steelers game and Carr looked like a liability, not a potential savior.
-
I think Carr is tradeable he's a QB after all, but be has a full no trade clause, which could effectively make him untrdedable depending on what he feels about the open market.
His value might be low, but I imagine at minimum you're looking at a conditional pick that could go up to at least a 1st potentially and then some.
The biggest thing is he has a full no trade clause and gets more guaranteed money if he's on there next year.
It would probably make sense for him to just refuse all trades and seek a chunk of guaranteed cash on the open market. Or just force the Raiders to pay that bloated salary

He'd be the second best QB in the history of this franchise and it's not even close.
He's always been asked to carry that shitty franchise. They've never had even a decent defense to support him and their offensive line is worse than ours.
His slot receiver and star tight end were injured most of the season too.
-
They're not even mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and they're that committed to getting rid of him.
One of the worst run franchises in the league
-
McDaniels is literally just running the exact playbook he did in Denver. Guy's still a narcissistic moron, nothing has changed. Chase out the QB and anyone against him and install "his guys" with the "Patriot Way." Can't believe teams are still falling for it.
The Raiders have had 6 OCs since Carr got there and have never had a defense ranked above the 20s. He still dragged them to the playoffs last year. I think he would be a nice fit here, even if it took a year to really adjust. He's only 32 next year so I doubt he's completely washed, I would blame this year more on McDaniels really. Yeah you're not getting an elite QB but we can win with him with our current talent level.

If you're just doing it based on wordplay then he has to go to the Colts, to be an Indy Carr getting Indy to 500.

Hes being cut mark that down

They can cut him for 5 mil in dead space in the offseason or pay him lime 40+ mil the next 2 years
Hes getting cut. Nobody is trading for that contract

I mean that's QB money
Look at QBs drafted early the last few years.
The guys a QB who previously played at a high level.
He's an asset with a pretty solid value.
Sure his contract isn't team friendly but it's not going to cripple a franchise for years.
If you asked people on this board if they could have Carr with that contract for a 2nd round pick the answer would be overwhelmingly yes
Now how the logistics will work out with the no trade clause is the issue
I'd assume the Raiders best leverage would be if they threatened to keep and start him
Who knows, maybe they'd even take Zach Wilson as a placeholder so they can bring a rookie along slowly
-

I bet you’d be wrong. I know I wouldn’t want to make that trade. If we have to commit that type of cap to Carr, we need the picks to draft talent to support him. Oh and on the open market I bet he gets at 65-75% of that 40 million if he’s open to go anywhere. If he’s only playing for 1-2 squads or retiring? I’d bet that he gets 50-65% of that $40 million. After his play this year? He’s almost as big a gamble as Mike white.
With Carr you feel you have a better understanding of who he will be, but that price tag limits how you can build. Whites price will let you build a better roster around him, but you are less confident you know what he’s going to give each week
-
40 million?
The team that trades for him will owe him 33 million next year
Sure that cap hit bumps up to 41 million in 24, and I guess if you cut him at that point its pretty unattractive as you'd eat an extra 7 million in dead cap, plus the draft pick
Maybe a 2nd could be a little risky unless it came with a contract restructuring

Which Carr wouldn’t do… no reason to waive the NTC. Better to get cut, make the all the Raiders money, get to pick his destination AND get a second contract he is getting paid solid to strong QB money
-

Carr is a valuable asset to the Raiders, despite his performance being poor this season. He's a 31 year old QB who has been pretty good for most of his career. Unless the Raiders think they have a franchise QB on their roster, or they somehow end up in a position to draft one of the better QB prospects, it would be hard to just cut a talented 31 year old QB.
Sure his cap hit is going to be a little high, but what's the alternative? Either being forced to get a QB in the draft despite not having a top draft pick (currently set to pick 9th) or have to overpay someone in free agency.
I don't think it's impossible that the Raiders cut him, I just think if you're managing that franchise you do everything in your power to not cut him. After all look at the recent hauls for Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson.
And 40 millions year is a lot for him, but technically you could just cut him after 1 year (and with the dead money it would end up being a 40m 1 year rental) if it doesn't work out. That might be overpriced for how he's recently performed, but that's comparable to what Stafford/Prescott/Cousins are all making. Goff is also in that range
Whether the Raiders can play hardball (either forcing him to stay or waive his no trade) I have no freaking idea.
But I do think a conditional 3rd that becomes a 2nd if he's not cut after one year, is a very fair value for Carr with his contract. Especially since his contract isn't loaded with a billion dollars in guarantees that'll bury your franchise forever. Worst case scenario you'd get a 1 year rental and you'd lose a 3rd round pick and 40 million spread out over 23/24
-
Hes has had a collapse of sizeable proportions especially in 2 of the last 4 games . Fans are kinda tired of him but wish him well.
McDaniels is a moron but you keep saying valuable asset for a guy who is literally getting shitcanned before the seasons over
I view this as out of respect . You don't bench the guy you plan on paying 80 mil over 2 yrs to. Unless you think that's logical . We're so convinced your worth 80 dollars we'd rather you not play at all or be around the team .
I'd just say their defense isn't as good as ours and I'd take our total sum of skill player over what is an aged Waller and Adams
The Carr of this yr ain't holding the jockstrap of 2016 Carr
With all this said it'd still be the most competent qb play we've seen in a decade except 1 fluke yr with fitPatrick which ended in a meltdown as well
It's a moot ppint because Mike white is going 5-0 starting this weekend .

If he gets hurt I think next years salary becomes fully guaranteed. Not to mention he also probably becomes untradeable as well.
All the analyst and what not keep saying they expect him to get traded or cut. Which makes me think there's a realistic chance he can get traded.
But the benching is about protecting the franchise whether they plan on cutting or trading him

This will be the stance of every team out there, I would have said save for Indy, but they already canned Reich.
Seriously who would bring him in on that contract with trade assets going back? The only two teams I can create a plausible argument for would be Tampa Bay if Brady walks/retires and Miami if Tua is forced to retire. We don’t make sense as we aren’t close enough to make that move. Arizona might want to but no way to free that Kyler contract up. Seattle will draft higher than the Raiders and could either keep Geno or grab a rookie. Who am I missing that this would make sense to roll with?
-
I would never trade for a guy whos on his way out
The contract is horrible, but if LV eats a lot of it or Carr agrees to restructure then trading a mid-rounder for him to make sure you get him makes a lot of sense.
-

That's quite a few ifs. If he's only a five mil cap hit I'd expect the Raiders to take the easiest way out.
-

They'll probably cut him, but never underestimate desperate teams bidding against each other.
-
He's also not a long term solution so it's going to be an interesting dynamic between teams fighting to keep him out of retirement and trying to hedge their cap space for the future.
Have we discussed the Dolphins here yet? If Tua's brain injuries are as sever as they look than they would probably be in the market.
The irony is that the team with the most unhinged personnel history is the one that's cutting him.
-

He's only 31. I think he can give his next team at least 4-5 more solid seasons.
Las Vegas giving up on him like this could definitely motivate him to prove them wrong. He's that kind of player.

Miami is certainly going to be in on both Carr and Garoppolo if Tua is done.

Is what has happened in LV in the past several years Carr's fault or not? Can the Jets really fix what's been holding him back if it isn't his fault?

I think Josh McDaniels is a fuckin moron. I think Carr is a 12 - 15 ranged QB.
Carr is better than anyone we have in house but I think White can be a 15 - 20 ranged QB. Is the upgrade worth the price tag?

The difference between the two is that Derek Carr has done it consistently. Mike White has like two complete starts.

I agree and would not have any objection with the Jets rolling the dice on any FA QB because of that. Even if White balls out the last two weeks (or beyond.)
-
Miami is certainly going to be in on both Carr and Garoppolo if Tua is done.
If Tua is done I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after Brady. They're in win now mode, we know Ross has a boner for Brady, he's settled in Florida already, and they seem to have got away with the whole tampering thing that came to light with the Flores debacle.

For everyone (dcm) that wanted the jets to sign Jimmy G....this is why you don't shop at garage sales/flea markets for franchise QBs.
-
Let's compare worst case scenario with Jimmy G vs Rodgers
Worst case scenario for Jimmy G is they cut him, incur no cap hit and lose no draft picks. Essentially it's as if the move never happened, they suck without a QB, and then get a top draft pick to address the position
Worst case scenario for the Jets/Rodgers is we give up a significant draft compensation, a ginormous amount of cap space, and if he's washed up then we suck and the Packers end up with an awesome 1st round pick next year. On top of this the Jets will incur Rodgers obscene cap hit every season for the next several years
Jimmy G having health risk obviously sucks, but the Raiders addressed this concern with his contract, that they can get out of at no cost if they aren't satisfied with his health.
Rodgers by far has the most upside of any QB move we could have possibly made, and if he plays his best football it gives us the best chances we've had a SB in years. He also by a tremendous margin had the highest potential downside of any QB move we could have made because of the trade/financial compensation.
FWIW it's always been clear that Carr was by far my first choice, and Jimmy G was a backup plan that you fall back to if the big boy options fall apart.

I don't know how any of us could know Garoppolo's injuries were so bad he couldn't pass a physical.
It's like guys with character/injury issues in the draft. None of us know how serious certain issues are.
I still think a healthy Jimmy G is just as good as a healthy Derek Carr, and the difference in contract is due to Carr being a much smaller health risk. Obviously that is worth paying Carr more, the question is how much more. If Jimmy's issues are bad enough where his contract has to get significantly restructured, then it's probably a good thing we passed.
I was always on Rodgers though.

I'll never understand how people assume injuries are completely a result of bad luck.
Why do some guys only get hurt if they run face-first into a wall, while others get hurt every time they run hard? I just don't see how it's a product of luck.
Jimmy is injury-prone, and it was the primary reason people like me didn't want him here. The only "positive" to him for me was that he'd act as a bridge to Zach if Wilson has any potential to still be a starting NFL QB. I strongly prefer how things worked out.

Ari Meirov: "Before firing Josh McDaniels, the Raiders had a team meeting where players directed their frustrations at McDaniels, and unloaded on him.
McDaniels had Antonio Pierce speak on his behalf, and Pierce brought up the Giants' '07 team that beat the undefeated Patriots, explaining how that team believed they could beat anyone. Pierce said the Raiders need that mindset.
The players all loved it, but McDaniels didn't.
McDaniels told Pierce when everyone left: "Don't ever talk about the Patriots like that."
That's when everyone saw how divided the building was, and owner Mark Davis wanted Pierce as his HC."
