Title: 2022 College Football Thread
Post by: Heismanberg on January 19, 2022, 08:46:47 AM
Jerry Rice's son (Brendan) is transferring from Colorado to USC.

He's pretty good.

Lincoln Riley is loading up.  Replaced Drake London with Mario Williams and Brendan Rice, and he's likely going to get Caleb Williams through the transfer portal as well.

The PAC 12 might actually be relevant again.

Not sure that's a great replacement and he's probably a bit old for college now.

To be fair, him being heavier than Donald doesn’t mean much. They keep saying that like it’s mind blowing and Donald is the biggest human ever. Kids clearly a crazy athlete and future d1 football player, but I noticed a distinct lack of discussion about football awards he’s received for his prowess on the field to go with his athleticism

The Big Ten (BIG) signed a 7-year, $7.5B TV deal after securing the 2nd largest TV market (in 2024) with the addition of USC/UCLA which averages out to $1.07B per year, topping the SEC's current $880M per year deal which is expected to go up once TX & OK join.   <-----and that is one poorly constructed run-on sentence.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/big-ten-tv-rights-11660829533

By comparison, the ACC's getting around $380M per year....

Amen.

Besides the regional/geographical rivalries wrecked, as if 'Southeast' Texas & Okla. weren't enough of a stretch, two Los Angeles-based institutions in essentially a midwest conference is a joke.  While UCLA will use it to get out from under their current $100M deficit, the  remaining Pac-12 schools are not surprisingly going to take a financial hit (per Cal-Berkeley Bd. of Regents).  Being older than dirt, I recall the SWC and the original Big 8 - Texas school rivalries (plus Ark.) and the annual Nebraska-Okla. game were lost respectively.

I'm not sure if that's safe to say.

There are 3 elite teams on paper, and then everybody else. Most top-25 teams would get boatraced by Georgia as well.

Notre Dame is No. 5, and Ohio State is likely going to crush them.

PAC 12 was always USC or bust

Lanning will need some time to build Oregon.  Utah would probably struggle with every SEC team except for Vandy.

Billy Napier is the best offensive mind in college football since Gus Malzahn.

Joe Brady knows the passing game, but nobody calls a better run game than Napier.  He's never had a QB that does the things that Richardson can do either.

It was always USC or bust, but I'm sure the league was hoping Utah would make a run. Oregon was always going to get killed against Georgia and take some time.

That Syracuse Purdue game was insane. 42 points in the 4 th quarter. Purdue went ahead with 51 seconds left. 2 personal fouls on the extra point has Purdue kicking off from the 10 Cuse offense starts at the 50 down 4.

Roughly 7 snaps, 1 defensive holding penalty, a PI later after zero completions by Syracuse has them at the 25 with 12 seconds left. Orande Gadsden II (yes son of Dolphins Orande Gadsden) wins on a corner route with Syracuse scoring the go ahead TD with 7 seconds. 3 more personal fouls and a Purdue ejection later Syracuse kicks off from the Purdue 30 yard line.

Absolutely insane ending

Playoff Rankings
1   Tennessee      8-0
2   Ohio State   8-0
3   Georgia     8-0
4   Clemson     8-0
5   Michigan     8-0
6   Alabama     7-1
7   TCU          8-0
8   Oregon    7-1

which mean nothing since TN & UGA are playing this Saturday and Mich & OSU have yet to play as well--lots to flush out  That said, Alabama is playing Austin Peay Nov. 19 while Michigan scheduled Hawaii & UConn this year?

ND OL balled out.  ND 265 yds rushing; Clemson 97 yds

Univ. of Houston scored 63 points…and got blown out.  SMU with NINE TD passes;  77-63

Saturday, Nov. 19: dog day afternoon schedule-wise for the most part with a slew of top 25 teams playing doormats that are 15-30 point underdogs.  Georgia to expose Kentucky’s QB; only decent games out west in the Pac-12 (see below).

Dishonorable mention: Alabama hosting Austin Peay.  Read this suckup bullshit:

TCU 29; Baylor 28

TCU down 28-26, 4th down, 0:14 seconds left, no time outs left runs their FG unit out onto the field in fire drill fashion.....the kicker has no time to mark off his steps before the kick and runs to an approximate spot near the holder....ball's snap..... kicker nails it from 41 at the gun.  This after a TCU receiver dropped a previous would-be tying 2-point conversion with just over 2:00 to go.  Wild finish.

p.s. final: yale 19; harvard 14

Call me a crusty ol freak but following up his "freak ND" with "freak Utah" fingernails reflects poorly on both Caleb and Lincoln Riley.  Couldn't see a Bryce Young doing that or a Saban/ Deebo/Kirby allowing it.  It’s one thing to actively jaw against the opposing team during the heat of the moment but letting his players openly promote hateful language towards the other team screams lack of discipline.  I was semi rooting for Caleb to win the heisman but I didn’t realize what an arrogant prick he is.  He'll still probably win the heisman (as he should) but it was good to see the Utes punk the phuck outta him..

edit: MB, Max was awesome esp. in crunch time.  Too bad for some questionable play calling by TCU in OT.  At the same time your boy Avila (TCU C) and the TCU fatties up front got stoned by K-State back to back but a monday morning quarterbacking case could be made for the play calling (let alone a TCU unfriendly ball spot on 3rd down..ball should’ve been spotted inches from the goal line).   Sad end to a hellava season for the Horned Frogs.

I'd like to find a way to work the word "callipygian" into my daily discourse, but even with my unnecessarily florid way of speaking it might be a struggle.

In other words, I think GPM (Gods Per Minute) should be a draft metric. Based on that measure Dylan Gibbons is a high pick, even with an award for community activity he didn't once thank the Almighty for the work that he had been doing. I appreciate a lineman who says "you know what, the excrement I get recognised for comes from the work that I do, not a magical sky fairy". Bodes well for his career. Obviously the downside of this metric is that no one would ever draft a wideout.

Interesting hire

Former NYJ QB
Seems he knows how to light up a scoreboard even if he eschewed the traditional thinking of ”if you have two starting QBs you have none” this year:

https://skylinesportsmt.com/sacramento-states-offense-is-like-no-other-in-the-country-how-the-hornets-are-succeeding-with-two-quarterbacks/

In Taylor’s last game the Sac St Hornets dropped 63 on Incarnate Word.  Unfortunately for Sac St Incarnate Word dropped 66 in return.  If your coaching chops includes ‘defense’ Heis you may want to consider forwarding your résumé’ to Coach T c/o The Farm at Palo Alto.  ; )

Before that, they lost their stud TE to the portal too.

The portal is really turning college athletics in free agency. I know that players deserve the right to decide where to play, and NIL is good for the players in general. But Jesus it is different not knowing if a guy will play for your school for more than a year any more.

It’s always about the laundry, but it’s nice to have consistent names to root for too.

There is only one Prime though. Reed could be a better coach than Deion, but have no where near as much success because his personality doesn’t pull in recruits and NIL dollars the way Prime can

Yup.  ND’s totally flipped the switch on the Cocks.  The more I watch him the more I’m not big on Spencer Rattler, the bug-eyed dog-face boy (that recent impressive scramble notwithstanding). ND’s QB Buckner back from shoulder surgery is increasingly outplaying him.

ND OC Tommy Rees channeled his inner MLF and with ND up 7 and after beasting deep into the So. Carolina red zone against a tired Cocks defense elects to throw into tight, compressed coverage…100 yard pick 6.

Game over, ND coming back from a multi TD deficit earned the win.  Good effort by both teams.

Hopefully not. At least we aren't a 3 win team shopping in the veteran QB market.  We are a team that is good on defense and has weapons on offense.  A QB could see us as a competitive team, not  team to be used to bid up other teams.

Sonny Dykes gets coach of the year going from 5-7 in 2021 to 13-1 and a championship game birth.
Honorable mention should go to Tulane's Willie Fritz who went from 2-10. in 2021 to 12-2 and a Cotton Bowl over USC.
Caught the 4th qtr., USC up. 45-30 goes TD/PAT, safety, TD/PAT to win 46-45 (Caleb Williams 5 TD/s for the Trojans).
Looking at the non-stop crowd shots during the frantic last minutes, if you have a cisgender son looking at schools, consider The Big Easy's Green Wave.
