Let him compete for a job. If we're drafting guards, we need veterans to be there in case we don't draft well. He'll probably compete with Clark, a rookie or 2, Lewis, and Van Roten for the inside jobs. Really hoping we get a guard in round 1 or 2 though.

We need to make a significant investment in the OL. I am hopeful/confident it's in the draft. Feeney is not it.
To me, the key is upgrading both guard spots. McGovern and Fant aren't great, but they were decent enough, we're paying them already, and Shanahan's scheme should be better for their skillsets. If one guard spot is handled by a 1st/2nd round pick, and the other is a 3-4 way competition between veterans who have started in the league and Cameron Clark, that can work.
We have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, and probably a 6th once we trade Darnold. I want 2 offensive linemen in those spots, and I want one at either 23 or 34. At the bare minimum, 23 or 34 needs to be one.

If Douglas drafts a capable guard in the first two rounds, I don't think we can complain much. If that doesn't happen and the line is excrement, he deserves all the criticism.

Can he at least play in training camp before we cut him? Dude was an every week starter for 3 weeks, and he's still 27, and he was a former 3rd-round pick, so he has some pedigree. Even if he was a bad starter, he's a fine guy to have in competition.

I think he'll be a backup at both center and guard. He's played both. He isn't that valuable as a starting guard. His value is in being a good BACKUP at 2 spots. And of course his style.

He provided some fun this offseason. I'm hoping he either never plays for us, or he plays for us and is really good. He's a 5th-year pro who is a former 3rd-round pick, so it's certainly possible we can catch lightning in a bottle with a scheme change and make him a replacement-level guard. He has plenty of starting experience, even if it's not positive experience. As a depth guard, I'm fine with it.
If he plays and sucks, I'll be right there with you making fun of the mullet.

Y'all are thinking of this all wrong. He won't be good, but he's a solid backup. We've had plenty of these type of players that provided much less entertainment.

Just clicked through to overthecap's comp pick prediction page which is usually pretty accurate. Right now we're on track for 4 picks, all 6/7 rounders. Interestingly the two organizations we have the closest ties to, niners and eagles, have an insane 16 projected comp picks between the two of them as things stand now (obviously still early in free agency)
