Happy Free Agency day
The Jets just acquired Paul Stastny from the Golden Knights. I guess that will put a smile on Laine's face, since he doesn't have to play with that fire hydrant Cody Eakin anymore.

Always liked Stasny.
Happy FA day, but I'm not expecting much from the Devils. Give me a depth defenseman and a middle six winger.
I'd like to use some of that cap space to entice Vegas into dumping Fleury's contract on us both for an asset and the player solving a need (I'll take MAF for 1 yr at his current rate of 7 mil).

The Knights trade raped us for Stastny. We helped them out of cap hell, and somehow gave THEM a pick in the deal. Terrible piece of business. It's freaking #AmateurHour in the Jets FO.

i dont even know where to begin with the sharks. we got money and holes everywhere.
i dunno, i guess fast from the rangers would be a solid 3rd liner.

For a second I thought I was in the wrong forum.

The Devils just pulled off a great trade, sent Joey Anderson to Toronto for Andreas Johnsson because Dubas has managed to make such a mess of their cap. Johnsson at $3.4M per is a terrific add.

Hopefully this is the year the Winnipeg Jets clean house. Chevy has had 10 years of suckling Chipman's moneyteat, and Maurice has had 7 years of ruining this roster. That's long enough.

This, apparently, will be the @SanJoseSharks
third jersey next season. A nice touch - replica of the California Seals uniforms in their final two #NHL seasons: 1974-75 and 1975-76.

i have a '71 seals replica in the closet i bust out when i goto ohl games (london knights, same colors as the golden seals), this will go nicely with it. might have to score a '75 replica to match now. mmmm

Damn, when did UND become the Fighting Hawks? Had to be pretty recently.
They were still the Fighting Sioux when I was living in Minnesota.

Watched the first period and the last ten minutes of the third. Great performance against a ludicrously stacked Team Canada. We'll let you have it as a reward for Georgia.

I cannot believe given the talent pool available that he was the hire.
It's not the most attractive job, but they're quietly pretty deep in terms of their prospect pool. Gotta hope the reports on Hughes getting all muscley this off-season are true.

This is a sport, more than any, where good coaching influences a franchise more than anything else even talent. It only took 30 something years and the selling of the franchise to figure that out.

I suffered through the awful years in the 80s, consistently losing to Gretzky/Messier. I suffered the Selanne trade. I suffered losing my franchise to Arizona. I suffered Mike Milbury and the numerous dumbfuck trades the Isles made. I suffered Claude Noel. I'm continuing to suffer Paul freaking Maurice.....and now we just gave away a generational player.
I've had it.

He has a wide open opportunity with both Blackwood being on the COVID list and the status of the roster given Crawford's retirement to absolutely seize a backup job in which he'll be getting a lot of run.
He was horrible Thursday as was largely the rest of the team. Last night was a tremendous bounce back effort. Hughes and Smith continue to play out of their minds. It's very encouraging considering they're missing Nico, Bratt and Vats.
I still have expectations of being a seller at the deadline this year (bye Palms), but freak it, let the good times roll if they can keep this going.

I didn't realize Blackwood was on the COVID list, I wondered why Wedgewood was playing again, that would explain it. My interest in hockey is basically if the Devils are playing I'll watch it, good or bad. If the Knicks are on at the same time it's a matter of how the games are going.

Absolutely would've strangled him. But reading the story, two things jumped out:
1. Why would Skalde's wife get in the back seat with Donatelli AFTER he had already groped her boobs earlier, and
2. Donatelli's fingering her snatch in the back seat of the car and yet the missus isn't letting her husband know about it at that time?

I will generally stick up for Tom Wilson, he's a much better player than he's usually given credit for and he's a guy whose game is at its best when he's playing on the line. He's not a pest, he's tough as freak and he always answers the bell, and he gets in opposing players' heads just because they always have half an eye on him when he's on the ice. That said, you're absolutely right on this hit. Way past the line and deserving of a big suspension, if you're going to be a guy who plays in the grey area then you have to make sure you don't step beyond it and he really did here.
Still though, freak you for linking to NESN commentary. Those guys are the most one-eyed, biased, bullshit know nothing commentators in all of sport. I despise NESN hockey coverage so much.

Actually the Caps' broadcast was even more absurd than the cycloptic NESN homers. They couldn't get past poor Tom (who supposedly only hit Brandon Carlo with his glove--his glove!) being absused/cut on the play. For me the only redeeming aspect was that it happened to a Bruin who have their share of cheap shot artists as well (Marchant et al). What also was freaked up was Vrana of Washington crosschecking Carlo after Carlo slumped to the ice.

Scary ending to the Habs-Jets game:
Winnipeg's Mark Schiefele channeled his inner Tom Wilson as the expense of the Habs' Jake Evans after Evans buried a wraparound goal into an empty net.

You're right, in that there was really not much wrong with this either. The hit was entirely legit, the outcome was pretty awful. There is no defenseless receiver rule in hockey - Scheifele stayed on his feet and didn't make contact with the head. Half a second earlier and he prevents the goal.
Neither player is at fault here. The hit was fair and the "keep your head on a swivel" argument doesn't really count here either. It's just an unfortunate event.

One of the worst hits I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t even know which replay was the worst but I know one thing, I’m not watching it again. I, legit, thought he might have been dead for a second. And, the “keep your head up” excrement does not apply here. Full speed, elbow up, obviously pissed they were about to lose, Scheifele better get the rest of the series, minimum.
-

You don't need to make an attempt to play the puck when making a hit. You're allowed to separate the man from the puck.
I think there's merit to the argument that he made contact with the head, but I don't think it's egregious. "One of the worst hits I’ve ever seen in my life" is monstrous hyperbole, given how long you've been watching hockey. I've seen worse this season.

Given the fact he was immediately knocked out, regardless of whether it was legal or illegal, with no way to brace his body (which was flipping), makes it one of the worst hits I’ve ever seen, yeah.
They’re showing the replay on NBCSN and his right elbow definitely comes up. No hesitation, he’s skating full speed, it’s text book charging which is suspendable. Knowing the league, he’ll get 2 games, and then he’ll be a target the rest of the series.

Man, I don't know. Even Beaker isn't defending it so maybe I'm wrong on this one. I just think it's so close to being clean that I find it hard to call it that bad. It's definitely a charge, but the outcome seems to be what's driving responses rather than the act.
-

It conjures up Hunter/Turgeon memories for me which, don’t get it twisted, was way after the play, way more premeditated and way more egregious than this. And, yes, my initial reaction was pretty much horror seeing it in real time but even having time to think about it and seeing the numerous replays that the network showed, I think (and I know you said it’s not part of the convo) but no attempt to even poke at the puck, the full speed he came in with and (maybe he was trying to hit him in the chest or shoulder) the fact the elbow does come up and contact is made with his head, it’s suspendable. In my mind it should be the rest of the series, but, given some of the decisions they’ve made, he’ll get 2 like Reaves did.
-
That wasn't a clean hit. He was looking to destroy that guy. That was a kill shot.
-
It was an awful hit...but scheifele might get 1 game, 2 at worst. He's a first time offender and not a predatory player.

"There was really 'not much wrong' with this either" suggests you're referring to Tom Wilson's last encounter with the NYR (which in fact actually did contain some 'shove his head into the ice' goonery). But beyond that, by "channeling his inner Tom Wilson" I wasn't referring to the 'legal' rough 'n tumble Tom Wilson so much as the darkside Tom Wilson (he of the repeated suspensions). I'm not looking to belabor the point but simply to suggest Sheifele-on-Evans wasn't cricket.
Re: the "neither player is at fault" in bold reference: Neither? Love the dry humour.....lol
Lastly, if nothing else it was charging.

Yeah, it's definitely charging by the letter of the law, but I still think the outcome makes the hit last night look worse, it's really not far off a textbook open ice hit. If Scheifele is half a second quicker down the ice he prevents the goal - he's got no choice but to skate most of the length of the ice because of how the play happened and the fact that Winnipeg were throwing everything forward to get the tying goal, so I'm not sure what he's supposed to do. He put everything into trying to prevent the goal and keep his team in the game, I don't believe it was a hit with intent to injure. He was trying to separate man from puck and the amount of ice he had to cover to do it meant that by the time he got there he had a fair lick of speed.
I've no doubt he'll get a penalty but I hope it's not a long one, I don't think it's deserved. 20 years ago Scott Stevens was winning Stanley Cups making hits like that (yes, I know that times have changed).

All fair points (and good scott stevens ref). I think that there should still be (for lack of a better description) a 'standard of care' that should be adhered to that applies to the fraternity of players regardless of the jersey they wear....what I'm trying to say is that while a guy's first instinct may be to want to knock his opponent into the middle of next week that--at the same time--he bears in mind that he could in a flash alter/end the other guy's career. But this would require a more nuanced, at length discussion involving enough single malt libation to float a battleship... so I'll leave it at, 'point taken' ; )

Paul Kariya still drools when he smiles after taking a Scott Stevens special.

lol...some duncecap on twitter compared the Scheifele hit to Bertuzzi/Moore.
Ok guy.
I'm a hockey ignoramus and even I know that's ridiculous

Wasn't an open ice hit. Evans was coming around the net to score and wasn't able to protect himself even by accident. It was predatory no matter the gymnastics you want to use to say it wasn't.
Steven's hit was bullshit too but legal at the time.

4 Games for Scheifele....incredible.
-
I don't care if Scheifele took his skate off and stabbed Evans, the fact Tom Wilson got nothing for ragdolling Panarin after a whistle and scheifele got the book thrown at him is freaking retarded.
Parros should have to eat broken glass for this garbage.

Habs fans started harrassing and threatening Scheifele's parents. #Classy
Thanks for reminding me how much i hate Quebec and the greasy scumbags that occupy that province.

Aside from Sheifele, the Jets' Nikolaj Ehlers (#27) was pure class shielding Evans along with the linesman:

Local Winnipeg news take on the hit. Among the the locals this one pasty pudgy nerd in a bike helmet tried to sell it as Scheifele purely "thinking puck" yet when you look at the slo-motion replay, had Scheifele extended his stick and actually played the puck he could've very well prevented the completion of the wraparound:

Serious (if lamebrain) question: Sheifele was given a four game suspension after game 1. Since the Jets were swept in four games is he ineligible for the season opener in 2022?

I disagree. They were the third worst option behind Vegas and the Leafs. Now they need to get curbstomped by the Isles or Bolts.

you're still wrong.
The built-in excuses for the Jets are running rampant now because the Habs are this apparent juggernaut. freak the Habs.....i hope they get prison raped.

Good move by Minny. Gives them cap space to protect the future (e.g. Dumba, Greenway) in the upcoming expansion draft.

Absolutely a necessary move both to clear up cap space and to get two guys with NMC's off the protection list so they can keep Dumba (remember, last time they had to trade away Alex Tuch for pennies on the dollar in order to ensure Dumba wouldn't be selected in an expansion draft), as well as giving them cap flexibility this offseason.
That dead money is going to suck in 2022-23, 23-24 and 24-25, plus as a bitter Devils fan, Zach can eat excrement.
Can I just say I think the whole expansion draft process is bullshit? George McPhee gets credit in Vegas for "building" a winner when meanwhile the guy had incredible options going in.

Preaching to the converted here. All part of Bettman's obsession with making desert hockey work.

Geo. McPhee out-slugged Rick Tocchet in a playoff game win at MSG - he'll always be good money in my book.

Yup, the home and home and home and home was boring. That said, I noticed this snippet at the end of the link you posted:
"The GMs also spent 45 minutes of the meeting focusing on the officiating standard for cross-checking. No rule change is planned yet, but there will be further discussions Tuesday."
Normally I'd be quick to sneer "attention: Tom Wilson" but at the same time I also think 'allowable crosschecking' is unfortunately disappearing, namely defensemen being able to clear people from in front of the goal. Too much basket-hanging down low allowed today...can't always rely on the goalie to chop ankles. : )
